Saks Price Matches NM

Last week Neimen Marcus announced a three day sale where sportswear, dress collections and designer coats would be discounted 40%.  Now Saks is price matching.

Paige Turner reports that there is a huge sale on the 5th floor of Saks, which includes dozens of denim, DVF, Marc Jacobs, Alice and Olivia, Vera Wang Lavender and lots of other bridge lines. The sale runs through the weekend but I would expect that there will be many more to come.

Confusion at Chanel

Early last week we wrote about Chanel raising their prices 30% this coming month. Due to the world's financial whirlwind and retail downtrend the company apparently decided not to be so hasty. Many Chanel experts explain the Walmart-type rollback to the weakening Euro, which is down about 20% since highs in July.

This about face has caused mass confusion among Chanel fans. And the trouble is that shoppers are not the only ones confused. Even sales experts can't agree about what the double C icon is doing with their pricing.

For the sake of shallow journalism I thought I would do some calling around town and use the Chanel Classic Jumbo Flap in caviar as our litmus test. The following is what expert shoppers and Chanel handbag sales associates had to say about the situation.

Mad-Spy fan and Chanel customer:
Med/Large Caviar: $2,350 --> $2,495 (up 3%)
Med/large Lambskin: $2,495 --> $2,695 (up 8%)
Jumbo caviar: $2,650 --> $2,675 (up 1%)
Jumbo lambskin: $2,850 --> $2,875 (up 1%)
Reissues:
225: will go up 11%
226: will go up 4%
227: will go up 9% ($2,850 --> $3,095)

Madison Avenue Chanel
Betsy 212-535-5505
Chanel Classic Jumbo Flap Caviar is $2650 and will be $3000. The increase was going to be 30% and then they lowered it. You should, of course, come in and buy it now. (We say: But of course!)
The 2.55 is going up $100 to $3095 from $2850.
Math is not Betsy's strong suit but she can get you the purple out-of-stock color if you like.

Soho Chanel
Erma Store Director 212-334-0055
The Jumbo Caviar is not going up in price and the medium is going up like $100. We are told that the 2.55s will be going up in price as they receive them for next season. However, the cruise collection of bags is actually going down because of the strengthening dollar.

N15 @ 57th St. Chanel
Ermam 212-355-5050
The Jumbo Caviar is $2650 and Nov 1 it’s still going to be the same price. The 2.55s are going up a bit more around $100 to $200.
Ermam rattles off the same story as our Soho Chanel store managers, "There was going to be a bigger increase but with the strength of the dollar they decided not to move forward."

Saks
Elmira 212-940-4347
"They [Chanel] said that it [the increase] will be about 20% in November." Saks doesn't have the new price sheet for the cruise collection but the Jumbo Classic Flap in patent leather will be $3000. The 2.55 that is $2695 will be $2995.

Bergdorf Goodman
Barbara 212- 872-2858
"The Jumbo is not going up in price and is staying at $2650." The medium lambskin and caviar are going up a bit. The 2.55, which $2695 is going to be $150 more.

Dolce & Gabbana Sale

I wasn't going to post about the D&G sale because we always get hooked up with the in-store friends and family that's 70% off. (Steele has us covered!) Well after dozens of requests and Racked.com's review, I thought I would at least throw up the information.

What: Dolce & Gabbana
Why: Two floors’ worth of fall and winter items.
When: Oct. 27-31. Mon., 1-6 p.m.; Tues. & Wed., 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; Thurs., 9 a.m.-8 p.m.; Fri., 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Where: Metropolitan Pavilion, 123 W. 18th St., 4th & 5th flrs

The markdown goes as low as 90% off but some things are only reduced 35% off. We're still going to pass on the sample sale madness and stick to hanging out with Cono over at the Madison Avenue Store. At least we will save the cab fare.

Showroom Sales: Kid's Clothing

Simonetta is arguably the gold standard when it comes to children's clothing. Outfits for a 4-year-old regularly flirt with the four-figure mark. Yes, they're expensive, but they are also very beautiful.

Like most seriously expensive brands there is a way to get a deal. for two weeks, twice a year, designer showrooms open their doors to the public for what I like to call "true sample sales." Most showrooms offer 20% to 50% off wholesale prices allowing you to stock up for your lil'one without breaking the bank.

From Monday, Oct. 27th until Friday, Oct. 31st, Magia Imports-- which reps Simonetta, Cavalli, Il Gufo and Armani Jr, among others-- is offering shoppers 20% off wholesale prices. On Friday, the last day of the sale prices get slashed even further to 50% off wholesale. Just don't expect to find a big selection then.

Beware: Sample sales for kid's clothing is no child's play. These women mean serious business. Lines can run hours long and these mommas aren't afraid to throw an elbow. Also, don't be afraid to poke around the building. You never know what great little treasures you might find in other showrooms. Oh yeah, most showrooms only accept cash.

Bloomingdales 40% Off

On Wednesday, Oct. 29th Bloomingdales is taking 40% off designer clothing. I am told that St. John is the only brand not included, but that shouldn't really impact you unless you're over 90.

The pre-sale is currently underway so you might want to hit the 4th floor asap. While you're there grab the fries at David Burke-- they are awesome!

Intermix 30% Off

Prada Friends and Family Now 90% Off

All week I've been tracking what you guys have scored at the Prada sale and figured I should at least take a look. The first rumor was that there weren't going to be replenishments. It was a LIE! The sale was well stocked even today and sales people were still pulling out racks of clothing.

There are still shoes. One commenter said they were $150 on Saturday and now they are $79. Collection items --the trendy clothing you see in the magazine ads, not the basic stuff--were marked 75% off on the first few days of the sale. Today most of those Spring 2008 floral and fairy dresses, skirts, trenches, and blouses were over 90% off. Most pieces, including the dresses, are priced between $250 and $350. All you need is lots of closet space and a heavy social calender.

Also in stock and less than 10% off the original prices are ombre items from Fall/Winter 2007. This blazer was $3,050 and is now marked down to $200.

Prices are rumored to be going down again tomorrow, although I can't see how. All leftovers are being shipped to Woodbury. Bottom line-- run, do not walk-- to the final day of the sale.

Details below:
Dates: Sat. 10/18 to Friday 10/24
Hours: 9am to 6pm Monday through Friday and 9am to 8pm on Saturday and Sunday
Address: 609 West 51st Street between 11th and 12th Avenues
Payment: Credit Cards Only

Dow -32% YTD, Chanel Raises Prices 20%

The economy is is the worst it's been in a generation with the Dow Jones Industrial average down about 32% for the year. However, Chanel's execs have decided that November 1 is the right time to raise prices 20%. Maybe luxury lives in a bubble but ...I just don't think so.

Nitrolicious reports that prices of Chanel classic bags are due to increase 20%. A Classic Caviar Jumbo Flap Bag is currently $2850 but come election day the same bag will be $3420. That's a lot of bank, $570 to be exact.

So if you have been dreaming of buying a purple or black 2.55 or a large or small Classic you might want to consider giving yourself an early holiday gift. However, if the economy keeps up the way it's going Chanel might have to do rollbacks a la Walmart.

Prada Sample Sale Update

Racked.com has the skinny on what's going on at the Prada sale, It appears as if the standard discount is 50% off. Who needs to wait in a two hour line to buy last season's clothing when they were 45% off in the boutique. Well, not me!

One Mad-Spy reader braved the sale and even talked her way past the bouncers. (Snaps for getting past the line. We love a bit of civil disobedience.) Here's what she said:

Went to the Prada sale today around 4:45pm. I was told by two doormen that they were not letting anyone else in for the day because it was "at capacity". After telling the two doormen that I was a regular Prada customer at the retail level, I was allowed in. It was in no way crowded (I guess it was wishful thinking). There aren't any handbags or small leather goods being sold at this sale. What little selection there was in shoes was horrible - leftover summer styles from prior seasons. Most of the other merchandise was laying on the floor instead of on hangers. I found this sale to be a HUGE disappointment. I always purchased great merchandise in prior years at the Fuller Building. I guess all good things come to an end.

Thanks for the update. Keep sending them in!

The YSL Totem

If I were a man I would be Danny Daily. He understands fashion and isn't afraid to be critical. Danny broke news about the YSL's newest bag, the Totem and also questioned the brand's future as a fashion house.

Danny asserts, "YSL is quickly becoming the next Louis Vuitton, a house with less of a focus on articulate clothing and rather on princely bags."

Yes YSL, what happened to the fashion? How many more collections of print wrap dresses can we expect? The wide belt, from 2004 was the last big idea. Will there be any more? Please, we want to love you but you're not giving us much to love.

New Economy: Outlet Centers

Just a decade ago the stores that line Bond Street, Madison Avenue and Via Montenapoleone, would have rather burned their inventory rather than sell it through discount centers. Today the story is totally different. Big brands like Chanel and Dior entered the outlet game even before the economy started to rot. Robb Young, reports about the ideological u-turn, in an amazing article in the International Herald Tribune.

Economy gives new allure to Europe's outlet centers

Prices are 60% to 90% off retail. Call me if they decied to add gold jewelry to the sale!

$500 to $999= $50 gift card
$1000 to $1999= $100 gift card

Theory Private Sale

Theory bores me but many find it an easy "go-to" brand for work clothing. Getting the goods for a discount is being made easier by the company, which is opening its doors to employees' friends and family. Merchandise is 50% to 60% off from Tuesday, Oct 14th until Wednesday, Oct 15th (10am until 7pm.)

In order to attend the sale you MUST rsvp to RSVP@theory.com. The sale is located at 139 Fifth Ave (between 20th and 21st streets). As long as you're wearing Theory you should have no problem blending in.

Reminder: Saks F&F

Just a reminder: Saks Friends and Family is this week from Thursday until Sunday. If you haven't already put your picks on hold you might want to do so now. Most merchandise will be discounted 20% off and jewelry, fragrances and cosmetics are 15% off.

The Look For Less: Ballet Flats

There was this show that I used to love on the Style Channel called, "The Look For Less." The show was hosted by style maven Elisabeth Filarski --now The View's Elisabeth Hasselbeck. And, yes, I'm oozing with sarcasm.

Well, Elisabeth would present fashion victim guests an off-the-runway picture and her team of star stylists would have to reproduce the "look" by running around a local mall within a set time frame and the whole outfit had to be under $100.

Lets put aside our opinions about Filarski/Hasselback and talk about the fashion. The stylists were brilliant. There was Lloyd Boston and James Aguiar, just to name a couple. Somehow these guys would pull off the most amazing reproductions by running to Forever 21 and Macys.

The show is now canceled. We're still waiting for The View to share the same fate. However, I have come across my own inspired Look For Less. Here we have two pair of crystal studded ballet flats. One is $650 by Giuseppe Zanotti and the other is $29.99 by Sigerson Morrison for Target. Can you guess which is which?

Answer: The top image is from Target. I bet you can guess where I'm going today.

Random Fashion Musings and More

In the course of a week there are some fantastic items that cross my desk and for some reason they never make it to print or they can't fit in no matter how hard I try. So this post, or ramble, is dedicated to just that.

#1: During fashion week, Vogue God, ALT (Andre Leon Tally to you mortals) was overheard discussing "the look" of front row attendees. He summed it up by declaring that everyone looked, " Front of the book." For non-publishing folks, front of the book refers to safe (non-risky) editorial, photo shoots and ads. Try working that one into your cocktail conversation!

#2: Ode to Cindy Adams-- Bold face, New York, baron cries on the shoulder of a friend that he is no longer a billionaire due to recent market fallout. Asks non-millionaire friend how one can deal with only being a simple hundred millionaire—Only in New York kids. Only in New York!

#3: Understanding the current economic crisis requires more than a PhD in economics. If you have an hour, download PRI's This American Life to your ipod. The reporters clearly and simply explain the difference between the mortgage crisis of several months ago from this week's news and the federal bailout plan. Not to be missed.

#4: I hope this doesn't get too buried but the pictures and prices didn't make it to my inbox on time. Gucci is opening a brand new boutique inside Bergdorfs. At 10:00am Tuesday, October 7 (that's tomorrow) a series of exclusive "Gucci Loves Bergdorfs" handbags will be launched. There is only one of each style made. You can get your favorite Gucci style bag in lavender embossed g's and hearts. Everything will be available on a first come first serve basis. There are wallets also available.

Becca, a personal shopper at Bergdorfs, can keep you up to speed on what's available and how to get your one one-of-a-kind.

Contact Becca on her blackberry: beccalevi@vzw.blackberry.net.

#5: High School Musical 3: Senior Year in theaters October 24th. Need I say more?

Saks EGC or Cash?

I don't know about you but I kind of get excited when I hear about an upcoming Saks by-some-get-some or EGC (Electronic Gift Card) promotion. What can be better than getting a little gift after buying yourself a big gift? Well, cash!

Turns out that Nordstrom, the world's most customer friendly store, is willing to price match Saks' EGC promotion. That's right, if Saks were to give you a $150 gift card for a $1,500 pruchase, Norstrom will just take $150 off your purchase. So what's better a gift card or cash savings?

I don't think you need an MBA to figure that one out.

xoxo
