Retail Downturn and Cyber Monday

Just in case you were out-of-touch enough to think that all this recession talk was being over-hyped-- It's not! This weekend, one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year, I headed to one of my favorite stores-- Target.

Every checkout line was manned with a cashier but the shoppers weren't there. When I questioned the woman ringing me up she confessed that management was worried. According to Shyana, each cashier needed to take-in at least $4,000 in receipts per-day or hours their would be cut. This worried Shyana because if her hours were to be cut the holiday season would be a lot less jolly for her children. From shareholders to local cashiers everyone is feeling the pinch of Econ 101.

Speaking of retail sales, today is Cyber Monday! For the most part it's the online version of Black Friday. eStores take this first day back from Thanksgiving weekend to offer special deals to holiday shoppers. Analysts say that online sales could be up in the low double digits on Monday, when shoppers are expected to make additional purchases at work using faster Internet connections.

Here is a link to the stores participating in Cyber Monday. Mad-Spy readers might take notice of eLuxury, which is offering shoppers 25% off on gifts. Most of the deals, however, can be found in the electronic category.

Happy Shopping!

Surprise: Gucci Sale

Last week we were wrote about Gucci's upcoming first markdown. We were told that the sale was not supposed to come until December 1 but as we predicted the sale came earlier. Today shoppers woke up to a surprise Gucci sale. The discount is available online as well as in boutiques.

Like past first markdowns, the discount is 40% off most ready-to-wear, shoes, and handbags. Unlike past years, however, we wouldn't be surprised if second markdown came before the stockings get stuffed.

Neiman Marcus Black Friday

Neiman Marcus is hooking customers with an additional 40% off clothing and additional 30% off shoes. For some reason handbags are not included in the sale. Most items have already been discounted 30% to 40% off so the final discount ranges from 60% off to 65% off.

For instance, these open toe Louboutins started out at $1,125 but are now $528. Not bad, except that we were able to get the same shoe at the Saks sale for $338. Call us a bit spoiled but those shoes look incredibly more attractive with $200 taken off the price tag. You can get them now while they're hot or wait until the season cools down.

Bendel's Black Friday

In honor of Black Friday, Henri Bendel is doing a two hour sale (8am-10am) where merchandise will be discounted and additional 40% off of markdowns. Our Bendel's spy, James LaPorte says that there is a good amount of Missoni, Williamson, and Michael Kors Collection which is on 40% + 40%. (For all of our non-math majors that's a total of 64% off.) Brands like Milly, Tibi, and Alice and Olivia are also on the same markdown. "A hell of a lot of HB Cashmere Sweaters are also on double," he says.

Sales associates are only suppose to do the extra 40% for two hours, but James is planning on giving it to all his customers for the entire day. So if you're heading to Bendel's it's worth seeking out James.

Happy Thanksgiving

Hey, you forgot to mention the Marc Jacobs sale. Fall '08 RTW and shoes are 70% off, and there's still a good selection. I got an amazing coat!I

Thank you for your spy worthy news. However, the Marc Jacobs-Magnolia Bakery-Paris Commune section of the village is just that-- the Village. While we're on the subject, of off location sales please remind me that I need to call Jeffery's. I rarely make it that way but love the merch.

Sale Rundown v2

These are the discounts in our neighborhood. None of these sales are as good as those at Saks but now that their inventory has been decimated here's where to go to get the best values. Keep in mind, however, many people overs-hopped at Sakes. I guess at least 20% of the inventory will be coming back so make friends with the sales people so that they keep an eye out for your heart's desire/ Happy shopping!

Stephanie 212-535-5505

Christian Louboutin: The discount is just 40% off and is likely not to change.
Erich 212-396-1884

Michael Kors: Prices are now 50% off Fall/Winter ready-to-wear, handbags and shoes.

Reports From the Battlefield

One Mad-Spy reader made the rounds today. This is what she reports back:

Saks- If you want bags forget it! Clothes they have pulled more out from the stock rooms and there is still a nice selection. Marco, in Michael Kors mens, is selling at presale prices and letting you take it with you now, worth going to him even if your not shopping mens. Keep it quite though so he does not get in trouble, can't risk loosing that.

Bergdorfs- Still has a nice selection of everything especially bags. Not as big of a discount as Saks but they still have stock and 40% off is still better than retail.

Gucci- If your looking for bags go to Bergdorfs first they have several of the same sale pieces at the same discount without the presale. Leathers are 40% off and monogram is 30%. Shoe selection was just okay. nothing to party about, but I'm not a huge gucci shoe person so that's just my opinion.

Chanel- There are still some sale bags left but they are pretty much all pink.

Barneys- Overall not much going on in the bags and the shoe sizes were limited. Didn't bother with the ready to wear, too tired, Barneys was my last stop of the day.

Sale Rundown v1

The Saks sale saga continues and shopping addicts continue to battle their demons as their credit lines fill up and the merchandise flies off the shelves faster than a Lamborghini at the Grand Prix. At 12am, Monday morning, the Saks online sale was slated to begin. As the time approached the site crashed and shoppers began to get upset. When the technical difficulties ended, there was no additional markdowns to be found. Saks Internet shoppers were left confused and frustrated.
Contact: Franchesco's (shoes) 212-940-5305

Barneys sale started this weekend. Most sale items are 50% off but some co-op jeans are up to 70% off.

On Friday Bergdorfs up-ed their 40% off sale to 50% off.

Forget about Black Friday, Gucci's sale officially starts, Monday December 1st. Presale is already underway with a discount of 40% off select ready-to-wear, shoes and handbags.
Contact: Maura 212-717-2619

Miu Miu is 40% off bags, shoes and ready-to-wear. There is still a great selection of bags and shoes. Everyone is as Saks opting for the 70% off.

Prada Presents Pre-sale

The sales associates are desperate and the phone calls are going out en masse. The sale is 40% off and officially begins Thanksgiving. Prices subsequently drop to 50% and in slow years, like 2004, prices were reduced to 70% off in January. The discount includes lots of everything: shoes, bags and ready-to-wear.

Live From Saks

Reports from the sale floor of 5th and 50th are flooding in. It appears as if Christmas is coming early this year and Saks is intent on moving out all in the inventory as soon as possible. The store s currently discounting merch initial 40% plus an additional 50%, which basically comes to about 70%. The additional discount ends Friday (Black Friday) at noon.

Here are some reports:

It's insane! Saks is selling goods at 13 cents on the dollar, according to a source close to company executives.

You can't find anyone to help you. All the sales people are running, says one shopper on the 10022- shoe floor.

One sales associate says, "I've been working here for 13 years and I've never seen a sale like this."

Just remember, Louboutins are not comfortable to wear on a breadline.

Updated Observations:

Merchandise is steadily being brought out from the stock rooms. It seems as if there is more than enough to go around. After all, that's the reason why they are having the sale.

One woman had 20 to 30 pair of shoes stacked to be brought out to her car. Her pile included Louboutins, Viviers and Chloes.

The Chanel boutique is starting its sale Friday morning. Call Endo (212-940-4347) first thing in the morning if there's something you have your eye on. Classic bags, of course, will not be on sale. Think fashion Fall 2008 if you're looking for a discount.

Employee s are worried. Prices cut this low could mean job cuts are next.

The Bergdorf's sale is still just 40% off but they have a history of holding out.

YSL Starts First Markdown

YSL is about ready to announce their first markdown. ready-to-wear will be 40% off and shoes and accessories will be 30% to 35% off. The sale officially starts Friday but we are told that they will start ringing customers up tomorrow.

I think we will wait until YSL does their second markdown before we do any serious shopping. While on the topic: What was up with those atrocious "Trooper" heels.

Saks Begins Black Friday Early

Saks is moving Black Friday to Tuesday, November 24-- or now. Saks will be having its initial 40% plus an additional 50% off on selected styles, which basically comes to about 70% until Friday noon.

After Friday at noon, the additional 50% turns to 30% which comes to about 56% off. And shortly thereafter Saks and other retailers will realize that 2008 will have no Black. For 2009, red is the new black!

Contact: Peter Tay 212-940-2401 (Good luck tracking him or anyone down.)

Editorial Correction: Sorry for the confusion earlier. In all the Saks madness it seems as if our trusty sales associate has confused days and dates. It appears as if the sale is currently in motion.

Burberry Private Sale v2

Neiman Marcus Designer Pre-Sale

The Neiman Marcus designer sale starts Friday and runs until Sunday. Fine (read: expensive) handbags, ladies shoes, apparel and men's will be all marked down 33% and when you use your Neiman Marcus or Bergdorf Goodman card you will receive an additional 15% off sale and regular priced merchandise.

Lastly, any purchase over $1000 in the above mentioned areas can qualify for 6mos interest free on your Neiman Marcus card. (Editorial comment: Don't do it! If you can't bank it today don't bank on tomorrow).

Pre-sale started today and Fall 2008 Chanel ready-to-wear and bags are included in the sale.

Ralph Lauren Friend and Family 30%

Ralph Lauren is hosting another 30% off friends and family sale. This time they seem to have mastered the fine print and that $17,000 purple croc Ricky Bag you've been lusting for is not included in the sale. However, the code does work for getting over $1000 off the Ricky Calf bag with gold detail.

It might be worth the extra typing to browse through the "Create Your Own" section of the site. Customizable polos are already reduced about 40% and the additional friends and family 30% makes the shirt half price. Not bad considering that also includes the entertainment of selecting your color choices.

Sale details are below. Thank you Dom!:

Gucci & Bedat Watch F&F v2 NYC

An additional Gucci/Bedat friends and family sale has been scheduled. The last Gucci watch f&f sale was in mid-October and held in East Rutherford, NJ This sale is at least a lot more convenient and you don't have to pay a toll to get back home. A Mad-Spy fan who sojourned to Rutherford in the Fall and reported back the following:

I went to this and bought 2 watches, one his and one hers, for $300. They are amazing! They also gave us an email list to sign up for to receive updates on the next event!

Here's all the information for those who get turned on from a Gucci tick:

Gucci & Bedet & Co. Watches

Thursday, Nov 20th and Friday, Nov. 21st

Metropolitan Pavilion
125 West 18th Street

Missoni: We See 50%

Missoni doesn't mess around. When the new season comes in prices drop on half. There are no pre-sales. No one day sales or mark-up/mark-down days. It's 50% and it will stay that way until after Christmas when they drop prices again to 70% or 80% off.

Well cruise wear is trickling in and the prices are slashed in half. Sorry, scarves and bathing suits are never put on sale at the Madison Avenue store. You will have to go to Century 21 for that.

Gucci Gets Ready to Sale

I got a phone call late last week about Gucci hosting a "Holiday Shopping Night," on Thursday, Nov. 20th, were everything in the store will be reduced 10%! When I heard this I knew something was up. So I gave my good friend, Maura a call. Turns out that the big discount is coinciding with the Spring trunk show.

Yeah, Maura knows that that the meager 10% discount isn't going to drive shoppers like us. So she pointed out that we can take this opportunity to prepare for the official first markdown, which is slated for December. First markdown is usually 40% but I have a feeling that this year's sales will be earlier and more aggressive than we've seen in decades. Maura is off Tuesday but is ready to take your "pre-sale" list.

Luxury Brands Lower Prices

It's a bold move and it's very hard to imagine but luxury brands are making a rare move and lowering prices. Yes, you heard correctly. Companies like, Chanel, Versace, Christian Louboutin and Chloé are reversing the industry's maxim that luxury prices only move up. The cuts range from 8% to 10% on most products sold in the U.S, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Don't think that the price move will cut into margins. The Journal points out that the price adjustment isn't likely to dent the profit margins of most European fashion houses because the value of the dollar has increased 28% against the euro since April. Most European luxury companies pay for their materials and labor in euros. The stronger dollar means these companies are earning more than they had budgeted on every handbag or piece of clothing sold in dollars.

The bold move may be applauded but who knows if it's enough to keep the cash flowing into extravagant purchases while the economy is severely crippled.

Chloe Sale Update

May-Spy Izzy Writes:

Just wanted to update you: The Chloe sale is insane-- as crazy eddie used to say! Three ready-to-wear pieces for $495, plus a free pair of pants-if that's not a sale, I don't know what is. Tons of sizes, lots of stock. Oh, and there is a dressing room. Run, don't walk!

We're running, but we can only move so fast in five inch Louboutins. And Trance, see, you really are a legend. And Izzy said it, not me.

Marni Pre-sale 30% Off

Getting from Park Avenue to SoHo in the middle of the week is-- for lack of a better term-- a bitch. My driver, Trance and I bicker the whole way down about whether it would be better to go West across the park or head South down the East side and head West across Houston. You get the point though. We don't head to SoHo very often.

However, there is the seldom sale that makes us pull out or downtown passports. A good Marni sale is one of those instances. Starting Friday, Nov. 14th Marni is pre-selling all Fall/Winter 2008 ready-to-wear, bags, shoes and accessories. The 30% off sale officially begins the following Friday Nov. 21st.

Bottom line: love Marni, dread SoHo and prefer the current sales at Saks and Bergdorfs. Passports are staying put!

Bulgari Cleans Out The Vault

The poor economy is hitting every segment of the retail market, including jewelry. I have it on very good authority that Bulgari's upcoming "private" sale is going to be tremendous. Our insider says, "The vaults are overcrowded." So the goods are coming out at a huge discount, up to 75% off retail.

The sale runs from Saturday, Nov. 22 until Tuesday, Nov. 25th and will include jewelry, watches, handbags, accessories and fragrance. The details are below but I am assured that this is a jewelry sale you won't want to miss because like recessions-- they don't come around often. (Thank goodness for the last part.)

Dressing Up Baby 70% Off

Is there anything cuter than baby clothing? No!

Imagine how excited us Mommas get when we find a great deal for our kiddies. It's not like you can archive a onesie like vintage Corrège. After all, spit-up happens!

One great go to online destination is the newly launched Bare Naked Babies. The name alone makes us smile.

There you will find designer baby duds for up to 70% off. What's even better is that most of the clothing is current season because they know that you would never want your little girl to be in last season's pink.

Bloomies Friends and Family 20% Off

Bloomingdales is hosting a friends and family event from Thursday, Nov.13 from Sunday Nov. 16th. You can presale items now. You don't need a coupon, store credit card or any friends to get the 20% discount. Just mention that you're in-the-know and your discount will be applied.

The 20% might not sound so good but when staked on top of the current 30% promotion it brings the total savings up to 44% on many items. What's even better is that there are no restrictions during friends and family so you can go crazy on cosmetics and ...Chanel?!

Clarification:
The cosmetic departments are NOT taking part in the F&F, however many counters are giving away gifts. I know, cash is better than gifts!

Now Chanel: They ARE taking part in friends and family but in the form of gift cards. For every $250 you spend they will give you a $50 gift card. So it's like 20% back in the form of gift cards.

Roger Vivier Private Sale 40%

Some girls love Manolos, others swoon over Laboutons, but I personally go weak over Roger Viviers. You could imagine my surprise when I got a late night email from a Madison Avenue Vivier sales associate disclosing a private sale. Here is an excerpt from Mike's email:

To try and drum up business, (and hopefully some new clients for myself), the Vivier boutique is having a 4 day private sale event that starts Thursday the 13th and ends on Sunday the 16th. After the 13th, everything goes back to full price, and you'll have to wait until the 28th, (day ofter Thanksgiving) for the public sale.

So for those of you that can make it in on Wednesday, please ask for me, Mike, to show you all the sale items and i can put aside all of the things that you DEFINITELY want. Then on Thursday morning, (providing no one buys what you want at full price), i can ring up all of your goodies and messenger/ship them to you. or you can come by to pick them up as well, of course.

Mike: Please don't apologise for shameless promotion. Just keep sending us sale details as they come!

Thank you VW. We just want to point out that Michael Kors did a great job with Celine. I guess he got too busy in the reality TV business to worry about designing other lines. In the meantime, we are very excited to see what Phoebe will do in the future.

Henri Bendel Friends & Family 20% Off

I have no idea who shops at Henri Bendel's any more. It used to be a store great for introducing interesting designers and unique accessories. No other department store had a millinery department like Bendel's but all that is gone. On the bright side, there is a vast cosmetic floor!!!

If nothing brings you to Bendels you might want to do some exploring being that they are hosting a 20% off friends and family event from Friday, Nov. 7th until Sunday, Nov. 9th. Only full priced merch is included but hats usually didn't go on sale anyway.

Thanks for the tip J.L.

Saks Private Night Pre-Sale

Like most New York institutions, Saks has a secret society that enjoys special privileges. For instance, certain Manhattan elite [read the likes of: Barbra Walters] have a constant 30% off discount. Other shoppers enjoy the store alone with their stylists and personal shoppers while a skeleton staff stays after hours [ahem: Céline Dion]. Then there are the minority of shoppers who are invited to Private Night [me and you].

Presenting Private Night c/o Peter Tay:

Hi,

Fall 2008 Private Night sale will be on November 11 and 12. I do not have a list of what is on sale, however I am sure there will be lots of goodies.

The following vendors are excluded from Private Night - Chanel, Prada, Gucci, and Miu Miu.

In order for me to accomodate everyone I am asking you to email me A list of definite items you want and A second list of maybes as A backup.

The "definites" list should consist of the shoes/bags/etc that you want unconditionally. You can "shop" through my Facebook albums and give me the numbers, color and size of each of the shoes that you definitely want. This way I can set your shoes aside before the madness begins.

The "maybe" list should consist of shoes/bags/etc that would be the replacement goodies, in the event that some of the items on the "definite" list become unavailable.

Once I receive both lists, I will start pulling your "definite" lists, and then follow with your "maybe" lists. I will then get in touch with you and let you know the outcome.

Please be considerate of my time when compiling your list. I have many clients to help so please only include items you are seriously interested in.

If you are still not a member of facebook, I would strongly recommend you become one, if not just to look at shoes in my albums, but to connect to all your friends who are.
This assures that you get what you want without coming into the store and minimizing the handling of your items.

If you will be using pre existing EGC, please let me know so I can transfer the balances to an EGC card u can process on your behalf. If you have an EGC with a balance greater than $1000.00, email me so I can give you directions on how to send your EGC to me.

It's first come, first serve, so don't miss out!

Best,
Peter

La Perla Private Sale 40% Off

Almost as important as what you wear is what you don't wear. That's why La Perla has always been the go-to brand for those who like to dress up and undress.

Well this week the girly girls and bad girls are both being rewarded. From Wednesday, Nov 5th until Sunday, Nov 9th, La Perla is hosting an invite only private sales allowing shoppers 40% off lingerie, swimwear and ready to wear. (You must print and bring a copy of the below invite.)

Thank me for the savings but I will not be responsible for what you do with the merchandise.
Merci Ms. Dancer!

Cosmetic Wars: Friends and Family

Last week the department stores were duking it out with their 40% off sales. This week it's Sephora and Beauty.com. Starting Wednesday through Friday Beauty.com is offering customers 20% off all products except NARS and Kooba.

Then from Thursday until Sunday, Sephora.com will be offering their friends 20% off. The magic Sephora code is FF2008 and can be used as many times as one likes. What's even better is that there are no exclusions. However, I've been told that they tend to "run out of product" quickly during these sales.
