Henri Bendel Castoffs

Earlier this month, the 114-year-old luxury department store, Henri Bendel, announced that it will stop selling clothing and focus instead on its accessories and cosmetics. That's a lot of clothing to hit the discount market and we know where it's going...

In the East Village, there is Gabay's Outlet, a small designer discount store we like to think of as Century 21 lite. The store gets major close-outs from Bergdorfs and-- you got it-- Henry Bendel. Most shoes, bags, clothing and accessories at Gabay's are priced at 50% to 80% off retail. Expect to find lots of Chanel, Manolo, and Jimmy Choos shoes, in addition to YSL and and Oscar de la Renta clothing. There is also lots of great men's lables, including Etro and Davide Cenci.

We were speaking with the owner today and found out that our East Village secret had first pick Henri Bendel's luxury castoffs. The shipment is expected to hit the store later this week and should include some great clothing.

The rest of the merchandise, we're told, is heading to TJ Maxx.

Any sense of when the clothes might hit TJ Maxx?

I would give it a couple weeks depending on your location. NYC will get them faster than other areas.

how is that possible given that their is only one bendel? it would only hit nyc stores right?

Depends on how much inventory there is. I would not really expect anything to hit west coast stores but it is possible and likely for things to end up in NY stores out of the city and it the surrounding states like New Jersey and Connecticut.

I read in a blog that TJ Maxx had designer fashions. But when I stopped by all I saw was a football field full of cheap boring clothing.

I've been to Gabby. Nice people, but small space so I suspect a lot will make t to TJ Maxx.

TJ Maxx is really hit or miss, and some stores have a larger designer section than others. In The Fashion Mall in Paramus, NJ, there's a lot of designer merchandise to be had, but mostly it's not couture - I have found Moschino Cheap and Chic, Rich and Skinny Jeans, leather Cole Haan and Coach jackets, llsli, James Perse, Seven for All Mankind, etc. etc. But you have to kind of pick through the racks. They've also sold lots from Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf's there, where you can occasionally find a real designer piece, so I wouldn't be surprised if Bendel's headed there. My guess is that if it is there, what it will be is mostly Bendel's in-house label cashmere and silk sweaters, that kind of stuff, not the merch they sold on the higher floors. So sad that Bendel's won't be selling clothing anymore!

Couture is very specialized and expensive--six/seven figures for a dress. Only a few houses are licensed for couture. You won't find it in high end dept. stores and certainly won't find it in TJ Maxx. You mean designer/rtw.

Can you please give us an update on H. Bendel? Is there an in-store sale? Thanks!
