New Year's Sale: Neiman Marcus & Saks

As we count down the final hours of 2015, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the Madison Avenue Spy family. When I started this blog --almost nine years ago-- I wanted to carve a place on the Internet where people could get insider shopping information. With your support and help, I think we have succeeded in adding transparency to pre-sales and VIP shopping promotions.

I hope you continue to be amused and informed. Wishing you all a joyous, prosperous, healthy and Happy New Year. Without further delay, we bring you the final sales of 2015.

Saks Fifth Avenue
The Final Sale has started. Shoppers can now save 70% off on designer clothing. (The shoe discount is stalled at up to 60%.) The Valentino black white print dress from off the runway is $1300 from $4400, a Herve Leger Jacquard dress is $500 from $1700 and Norma Kamali foil leggings are $60 from $195. Do grab a pair of these Frame jeans for $90 from $199 or a distressed pair for $70 from $230. Just be careful, some heavily reduced items may be final sale.

Neiman Marcus
Through Friday, you can save an extra 33% on already reduced items. On some clothing the additional discount brings the final markdown to about 70% off. Among the items eligible for the extra markdown, is an Alexander Wang white crepe gown that's $300 from $925, a chunky cashmere Derek Lam sweater with an oversized collar for $666 from $1700 and a Valentino floral print baby-doll dress is $1880 from $4700. Sandals appear to be the most highly discounted shoes. Sorting for more seasonally appropriate options we found Tabitha Simmons velvet slip-on sneakers for $250 from $625, Fendi t-straps for $300 from $900 and Lanvin ballet flats for $225 from $560. Neiman Marcus still has a great handbag selection but prices aren't reduced nearly as much as their competitors. We will keep an eye on that.

Moda Operandi
Keeping one step ahead of the pack, Moda Operandi has taken up to 75% off. Among the most highly discounted items we found a Tanya Taylor black and white floral print dress that comes to $50 from $600, a Dolce & Gabbana shift dress with leather appliqué for $2250 from $9000 and a Giamba a-line skirt for $223 from $890.

Shopbop Extra 25% Off (Again)

For the second time this month, Shopbop is offering shoppers an extra 25% off sale merchandise. Use the code EXTRAEXTRA when checking out to engage the additional discount.

The Maison Margielia shoe selection is exceptionally good with an initial discount of 60%. These over-the-knee leather boots and black and white booties are both about 75% off after using the promotion code. We dare you to go for this Merry Xmas sweater from Markus Lupfer ($140 from $310). After the fact seems even cuter than before the holidays-- especially if you're not Christian. From the designer selection there is a grey cashmere Cushnie et Ochs dress that also comes to 75% off after the discount and this Herve Leger trompe l'oeil lace design skirt comes to under $300 from $1300.

The promotion started today and runs through the end of the Year. Just like 2015, it's all over at the strike of midnight Thursday. That's midnight Pacific Time, which gives us East Coasters a few extra hours to drunk shop.

Disecting Nordstrom's Half-Yearly Sale

The Nordstrom Half-Yearly sale is back. After taking a hiatus from the semi-annual event, Nordstrom is bring back its biggest sale of the year. The discount is 50% to 60% off most all fall and winter merchandise. Take note, the sale only runs through January 3rd.

Some items may not be discounted as much as other department stores but we love that each purchase comes with a no-questions-asked return policy. Nordstrom is also notorious for price matching. If you see an item priced less at another store Nordstrom will match the price in most situations. They have even been praised for honoring a markdown on a non-exact item.

The best part of this Half-Yearly sale is that there are a lot of great items that have been long sold out at other shopping destinations. For example, discounted basic black Saint Laurent Sac de Jours are long since sold out but are available here for $2300 from $3300. If you're looking for steeper discounts of 60% head this way to find a classic Nina Ricci wool coat that comes to $1460 from $3650 or an iconic Proenza slash dress reduced to $1330 from $3325. Unfortunately, the coordinating fishnet tights are sold out just about everywhere.

Other great available standouts include a Dolce & Gabbana rose print jacket that you can easily wear through Spring, a Lanvin high-low dress and a JW Anderson double-buckle leather skirt. Among the shoes are Valentino Rockstud booties that are $550 from $1375, Miu Miu studded cap toe loafers for $320 from $800 and Lowe boots for $400 from $990.

We suggest you snag what you like now because Nordstrom's online discounts don't usually dip below 60%. If you're shopping in the stores-- that's another story.

Inside Bergdorf's Main Floor Renovations and Discounts

Earlier this month, Bergdorf Goodman revealed the first of its four part renovation. The newly unveiled jewelry salon is now located at the 57th Street entrance of the Lavender Lady. The updated look is exquisite although the jewelry collections seem to play second fiddle to the design of the room--the ornate shadowboxes on the walls and and jewel shaped jewelry showcases.

The redesign was spearheaded by Bergdof's fashion director, Linda Fargo, and incorporates a palate of ivories and grays. The salon's centerpiece is a pair of ornate custom-made chandeliers inspired by Lobmeyr’s “Sputnik” designs. Some of the renovation highlights include a private viewing room for VIP clientele and trunk show events. The 57th Street windows will now be available for jewelry-specific displays.

The space that is now the Jewelry Salon, was previously inhabited by scarves, sunglasses and select handbag brands like Givenchy, Celine, Alexander McQueen and others. These handbags have been relocated to the Fifth Avenue main floor entrance thoroughfare. Unfortunately, the new set-up is more reminiscent of a holiday market than the City's premier shopping destination.

Change can be difficult and long-time Bergdorf shoppers are likely to feel a bit disoriented by the redesign. We will miss the warm welcome of the the dazzling jewelry that differentiated Bergdorf's from other first floor handbag bazars.

One characteristic that remains the same is the second markdown discount. Right now, shoppers can save 50% on an assortment of designer handbags. The sale selection includes a moderate assortment of bags from Christian Louboutin, Proenza, Nina Ricci, Tom Ford and Bottega Veneta. (Head this way to see pictures and pricing.)

Among the sale merchandise are Proenza Schouler's Croc-Embossed bag that's $1340 from $2680, Alexander McQueen croc embossed clutch is $940 from $1345 and a Nancy Gonzalez authentic croc clutch for $1300 from $1865. Other highlights include the Tom Ford Alexis Shopper that's $1400 from $2800 and Bottega Veneta aqua shopper is $1800 from $3600. (Take note that many of the online Neiman Marcus prices are sometimes higher than what we found in the store and other times they are even lower.) Pictures and prices of the Bergdorf Goodman sale selection are here.

We are sure that we will adjust to the renovations and can't wait to see what else Bergdorf Goodman has in store. We will just have to remember to take a 57th detour to spend time with all of our best friends-- diamonds, of course.

Finding Designer Discounts of 70% or More

Sale shoppers love this time of year. The discounts are plentiful and so are the options. The slyest sale shoppers are reaching beyond the common 60% off and searching for top designer merchandise that's been reduced 70% or more.

Those looking to spend less than 30-cents-on-the-dollar have come to the right place. We scoured the Internet and have curated a selection of the best designer deals. Scroll through, we're sure you'll be impressed with out ability to sniff out high Aquazzura boots for $350 from $1400, Golden Goose sneakers under $200, a Rosie Assouline blouse for $225 from $900 or a Met Gala worthy Delpozo gown for $3000 from over $10,000. We can't wait to pair this Preen by Thornton Bregazzi dress ($440 from $1460) over a sleek turtleneck. With discounts like these you can afford to take fashion risks.

The Five Best Places to Shop After Christams

Black Friday is for the amateurs. Real shoppers sharpen elbows for the day after Christmas. It's the time of year where you can still find a rather good selection of merchandise that's highly discounted. Over the course of the week you'll also find great opportunities to pounce on hard-to-find items that may get returned.

Below are some of our favorite post-Christmas shopping destinations. Share your favorites in the comment section below:

1. Saks Fifth Avenue
Saks is enticing shoppers with discounts for a total savings of up to 70% off. We suggest you get there now because after the clock strikes noon the additional savings ends. Online shoppers can continue to snag the additional discounts until midnight. A DVF shirtdress is $170 from $570, Kitty flats from Charlotte Olympia are $225 from $625 and pink Dolce & Gabbana lace pumps are $313 from $900.

2. Net-a-Porter
Luxury e-tailer, Net-a-Porter, already started their second markdown and some items are reduced up to 70% off. Post Christmas, you will notice that a lot more merchandise will be reduced to that 70% off mark. A Barbara Casasola black turtle neck is $171 from $5670, Roland Mouret aqua dress is $452 from $1500 and Paul Andrew high fringed boots are $600 from $2000.

3. Manolo Blahnik
Manolo Blahnik usually starts their first markdown immediately after New Years. The discount is normally 33% off but if you can wait three weeks, prices get slashed to 50%. Then, right when you think your winter blues can't get any worse, Manolo starts their February clearance sale where shoes are discounted up to 75% off.

4. Ralph Lauren
When Ralph Lauren slashes up to 70% off we've been known to raid the Rhinelander Mansion for cashmere sweaters for ourselves. The best part is that most of the leftover men's stock is a size XS, which is just perfect for us. Just be careful, prices in the store don't always match up online. So you might be better off just staying at home and shopping online. Right now, online shoppers can save an additional 40% off already reduced merchandise.

5. Barneys New York
Barneys still has better markdown opportunities than their competitors. Shortly, the store will begin to lose its competitive edge as other stores reduce accessories and shoes past 60%. The biggest Barneys advantage is their fashion lusty inventory. Gianvito Rossi ankle boots are $520 from $1300, an Isabel Marant beaded gown is $750 from $1875 and a Saint Laurent miniskirt is $800 from $2000.

Proenza Schouler 50% Off

Proenza Schouler is offering holiday shoppers a 50% savings. The discount extends to shoes and bags, which makes this the ideal place to shop for the designer's popular PS1 and PS11 bags. The discount is also available online here.

In the boutique we found medium PS1s in gold, berry, aqua, mustard, burgundy and red along with a few print and exotic skins. They are all about $890 from $1780. The exotic styles are more, of course. The assortment also includes mini PS11s that come in metallic pink, gold, and rose gold and are also 50% off. You can click here to see all the sale bags available at the Madison Avenue boutique.

The markdown also includes a great assortment of shoes and clothing, like this gorgeous double breasted coat that's $1100 from $2200,  these mid-heel ankle boots for $535 from $1070 and thigh high boots are a relative deal for $945 from $1700.

Department Stores: Finding the Best Discount

There are just a few days before Christmas and there isn't a lot of time to pick up last minute gifts. Almost all of our favorite stores have taken a second markdown. One can expect to universally save 60% on women's clothing but if you're in the market for shoes are bags, the discounts vary greatly.

Below is a comparison chart of Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue. The next and final markdown usually happens mid-January.

Here is your discount cheat sheet:

Bergdorf Begins Second Markdown Now

This is a huge weekend for retailers and your last chance to finalize your holiday shopping list.  Retailers are only adding to your temptation by taking second markdowns. Bergdorf Goodman is the latest store to start promoting additional discounts.

Handbags are now 50% off, which is excellent except the online selection isn't very good. A Givenchy Pandora is $1100 from $2300 and a Valentino fringy shoulder bag is $939 from $1900. The shoe collection, on the other hand, is excellent. The markdown is 50% off and the selection is top-notch. Manolo fringe boots are $900 from $1900 and Tom Ford sandals are $750 from $1500. Careful, some styles like Valentino Rockstuds are still only 30% off.

Lets sink our teeth, or wallets, into where we can find the deals. Clothing! That Dolce & Gabbana Je t'aims sweater is now $790 from $2000, a Marco de Vincenzo pleated dress is $929 from $2330 and a Donna Karan double-face cashmere coat is $1659 from $3900.

We suggest you pounce on this second markdown right away. It's not often that Bergdorfs goes toe-to-toe with Barneys this early in the season. (Shoe pun intended.)

The It-it: Sandals With Pompoms & Charms

If you haven't heard of Elina Linardaki's Penny Lane sandals ($187.51) it's a good thing because it means you'll be the first to have them. The Greek label is quickly rising to fashion fame for their pompom and charm embellished sandals. Instagramers can't get enough and neither can we.

The whimsical footwear is all handcrafted by expert Greek shoemakers. Each sandal is uniquely outfitted with friendship bracelets, turquoise, stones, tassels and pompoms. It's almost as if they were designed specifically for fantasy vacations.

Elina Linardaki's sandals can be found on Etsy but shipping takes a bit of time. Those who need their fix before schools let out can head to the Muzungu Sisters pop-up, which is open until December 19 at 402 West 13th Street.

These sandals are on the must-have list for anyone traveling to a warm weather climate for holidays. That includes most anywhere south of Miami--Rivera Maya, St. Barths, Anguilla et al. We only hope to wear out our first pair before Hampton weekends return.

Barneys Takes Their Second Markdown

Barneys started their second markdown today online and in stores. Most sale merchandise is now 60% off. There is still a wide assortment of fall/winter shoes, bags and ready-to-wear. Another markdown may come but most of the stuff you want will be gone by then.

The Barneys markdown is great because it includes an impressive assortment of shoes and bags too. A Valentino embroidered evening bag is $1760 from $4400 and a Givenchy bucket bag is $1000 from $2500. Among the shoes there is Fendi knee-high boots that are $620 from $1550, Manolo Blank lace-up sandals are $400 from $1000 and Nicholas Kirkwood pearl platforms are also $400 from $1000.

Among the clothing we found a full length Lanvin cape for $1350 from $3365, an Isabel Marant pink cable knit sweater is $140 from $360, a Stella McCartney bow dress is $900 from $2300  and an Emanuel Ungaro black and white blouse is $400 from $1000.

There will be one more markdown before the season comes to a close but there are usually not many desirable options. Shop now for the prime assortment, shop later for the irresistible prices.

Shopbop Extra 25% Off Sale

Just in time for the last minute holiday rush, Shopbop is offering an extra 20% off sale items. The extra discount brings the ultimate markdown up to 80% off. Just use the code BONUS25 at checkout.

Browsing through the 70% off section, which is final sale, we found a Jason Wu cocktail dress for $1100 from $5000. (Perhaps it was priced too high to begin with?) A J. Mendal dress is $500 from about $2200.  Moving up the discount food chain to 60% off, there is a Kara Ross cheeky clutch that comes to $450 from $1500 or a Kitty design pouch which is $120 from $425. A JW Anderson shirtdress is $210 from $710.

The sale is only for three days and ends on Thursday at midnight. The discount promotion is also a great opportunity to pick up last minute gifts. Second-day shipping is free if you have Amazon Prime. Frends headphones, Holly Dyment's 18K gold and diamond lip ring, a mini Eames chair, and an MCM passport holder are just a few of our favorite gift ideas. You can scroll through the slideshow above to see more of our favorite sale items and gift picks.

Saks Begins Second Markdown

t's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas. Everywhere we go there are sales but we are still waiting for more. Today, Saks Fifth Avenue granted our holiday wish and kicked off their second markdown, which brings yesterday's discount of 40%-- down to 60% off.

The remaining assortment of bags and shoes are still just 40% off. If you want to shop the good discounts you're going to have to sort through the clothing options. A Jil Sander sweater is nearly affordable at $300 from $830, a MSGM pink shift dress is $178 from $500, a Saint Laurent lipstick print dress is $1256 from $3490. You should definitely grab a pair of Frame jeans for just $57 from $237. If you look carefully you can still find some of this season's most iconic pieces, like the Dolce & Gabbana's large rose print dresses and the tiny floral print from Valentino.

The sale is just online for now, but we bet that a store manager can easily make adjustments. The markdown becomes official in stores on Friday.

Ralph Lauren Goes to 60% Off

We are nearing the height of the holiday season and Ralph Lauren isn't wasting a moment luring customers. The designer is offering an extra 30% off online sale items, which brings the total discount to 60%. Most collections-- including the Runway and Black Label--are eligible for the extra savings. Just use the code GIFT30 at checkout.

We took a look inside and found riding boots reduced to $634 from $1250, a velvet mini Ricky is $818 from $1950 and a chunky cable knit cashmere sweater is $713 from $1690. Over in the men's department, we found a RLX down jacket for $90 from $225, a lightweight cashmere sweater is $132 from $350 and a custom fit Big Pony Polo is $35 from $98.

For some reason, this sale is only available online. You can always price compare from the inside the Mansion and ask a manager to make an adjustment  but it's probably easier to just come home and shop. Below are more of our favorite items:

The Lowdown on Department Store Sales

Almost all seasonal merchandise in department stores is on sale. At most of our local shopping destinations, fall and winter clothing is discounted 40% off but the prices of shoes and handbags vary greatly.

Take note, some boutiques are offering even lower discounts than the department stores. For instance, Lanvin and Prada are both offering customers a 50% savings. Below is a comparison chart of Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue.

This season many stores are offering additional shopping incentives. Neiman Marcus and Saks are both offering reward gift cards with a purchase. Neiman Marcus is offering a $50 gift card on qualifying merchandise for every $200 you spend. Just use the code BONUS and Saks has a variety of spending benchmarks, which range from 10% to 20% in gift cards. Use the code DEC2015.

Here is your discount cheat sheet:

Bergdorf Goodman Markdowns: 50% Off

We usually find that the discounts are better when you shop in stores but sometimes we get a curve ball. Today, Bergdof Goodman started an online only promotion where most merchandise that's on sale is an additional 20% off. No code is needed.

Most designer merchandise was already reduced 40% and the extra discount brings the total savings to about 50%. This type of savings is equivalent to a second markdown, which doesn't usually occur for another week. The discount also extends to shoes and bags.

Head right this way to snag a Dolce & Gabbana Je t'aime sequined sweater that's reduced to $951 from $2000. A classic Lanvin dress trimmed with ribbons is $1575 from $3200 and Stella McCartney jewel embellished skirt is $583 from $1220.

The extra discount also applies to bags. An Alexander Wang studded bag is $551 from almost $1000, a Proenza Schouler PS11 is $1183 from almost $2500 and a fringed Valentino C-Rockee is $1050 from about $1875.

Check out these Jimmy Choo floral print pumps come to $375 from about $675 and buckle moto boots are $650 from $1150. Christian Louboutin shoes are still not marked down.

The extra 20% promotion runs through the weekend and then disappears. Second markdown usually becomes official the week before Christmas. We suggest you take advantage of this promotion while the inventory exists.

Holiday Travel Deals at Prime Luxury Destinations

There are few things we like as much as shopping and one is traveling. Uncovering deals at luxury resorts at the height of vacation season isn't easy. As in retail, hotels are eager to unload excess inventory.

It's not often that one comes accross a list of IT-destinations on sale. As a matter of fact, most of these destinations are officially completely sold out over New Years. Just leave it to our resident spies to uncover such a coveted list of properties on sale.

At Casa de Campo, for example, a stay from December 26 to January 2 in the two bedroom elite suite is reduced to $2100 a night (plus taxes and service fees) from almost $2800 a night. Elite balcony rooms for the same dates are marked down to about $715 (plus taxes and service fees) from $955 a night.

Over at the Gansevoort, in the Dominican Republic, a stay in the oceanfront three bedroom suite from December 26 to January 2, is marked down to just over $2900 (plus taxes and service fees) from nearly $4000. The two bedroom loft suite is $2220 (plus taxes and service fees) from almost $3000. Andaz Peninsula Papagayo in Costa Rica,  Grand Velas in Rivera Maya and personal favorite, Nizuc, in Cancun, also have a few discounted suites that are priced similarly to the other examples.

To sweeten the deal, some properties are even offering two coach airline tickets when you complete your booking. That alone can be worth thousands, considering the current price of airline tickets to warm weather destinations. For more information about these offers email info@steeletravel.com.

The Outnet Discounts Offer Savings of 85%

The Outnet usually has an amazing clearance sale in March but it seems the site appears to have changed it's markdown plan. Right now, you can shop from an amazing assortment of designer merchandise reduced up to 85%.

Unlike many sales that boast big discounts, this sale lives up to it's hype. There are more than 300 items priced at just 15% of their original retail price. A two-tone Roland Mouret wool coat is $450 from over $3000, a snake print bondage dress by Christopher Kane is $377 from over $2500 and a Maison Marginal shirt dress is $235 from $1565.

Among the sale merchandise is The Outnet's private label, Iris & Inc. Be sure to check out the cashmere sweaters that come out to under $70. The quality is really sublime for the price. This orange satin-twill skirt for $65 feels very Oscar and is perfect for a holiday party or any celebration if matched with navy sweater.

Take note that items are selling out quickly. We suggest putting anything you like in your cart and not taking too long to check out. Few things are more crushing than proceeding to checkout and find that the items you want are gone.

Inside the Christian Louboutin Sample Sale

This season, Christian Louboutin's team faked us out and moved their exclusive sample sale over a month. Don't fret, our moles still made it inside and report that prices are better than they have been in years.

Be sure to follow along on Instagram and Twitter for the most up-to-date spy photos and intel.

Most of the sample sale selection appears to be from the fall 2014 collection. (Do Louboutins go out of style?) Spies report  seeing a lot of spiked pumps and booties. Some boots and shoe styles have rainbow spikes and others have silver or gold studs. There aren't a lot of slipper style flats but there are a lot of questionable looking high top sneakers. Swapping out your Uggs for knee-high fur lined boots would be a welcome change.

Prices start at just $200 for flats but most non-heel styles, even studded versions, were priced at the $250 mark. The most expensive style shoes have purple stickers and are $800. A majority of the heels and studded variety pumps are priced between $300 and $400. For example, studded kitten heels were $300 and $2300 studded knee high boots were just $600.

Other shoe styles that we  spotted at the sale were patent leather Militante 100mm, So Kate's with a Vernis Mouchete Leopard print, the Paulina pump, Pigalles with multi color spikes, studded flat Rom Chic spiked boots and Degraspike flats. There were also a lot of high-top sneakers like these or sky-high high heels that many shoppers were avoiding. Unfortunately, photography was prohibited and nobody wanted to risk their red sole. (You can click here to see pictures of shoes styles we found at the sale.)

Shoppers are limited to five pairs of shoes per person. There are several shopping assistants restocking shelves and helping shoppers locate specific styles. There were no lines to get into the sale today but we don't expect that will be the case for the rest of the week. If you're looking to slide your way past security you better at least know the name of a person who already RSVPed.

Christian Louboutin Sample Sale- Invitation Only

Nancy Gonzalez Opens to the Public

Nancy Gonzalez has decided to open their exclusive sample sale to the public. Starting Tuesday, shoppers are invited to browse and shop the designer's luxurious exotic skin bags at a large discount. Insiders tell us that the selection will include current styles that are still in stores at full price.

This is a opportune time to pick up a gift for a special person. We wouldn't be surprised if prices are even better than past sample sales now that the sale is in the designer's showroom. Don't hesitate, there won't be restocking and this is one sample sale that almost always sells out.

Chanel & Louboutin Pre-Sale w/ Pics

Most stores have already started their first markdowns on contemporary and luxury lines but there are always a few brands that strong-arm all retail outlets to hold off on discounts. Starting now, you will be able to pre-sale seasonal merchandise from brands like Chanel and Louboutin at 30% to 40%, depending on the store and the item. The official sale markdown date is Friday, December 11.

Be sure to follow along on Instagram and Twitter for the most up-to-date spy photos and intel.

At the Chanel boutique clothing and shoes are discount 40%. In most department stores Chanel shoes are discounted 30% and clothing is 40%. The Chanel shoe discount at Bloomingdales and Barneys is 40%. The same formula applies to Louboutin: Barneys and Louboutin boutiques are offering 40% off but Nordstrom and Bergdorf Goodman are discounting the red soles 30%.

Chanel doesn't sell shoes or clothing online and the markdowns haven't been taken to the red soles in cyberspace. Louboutin handbags are discounted 30% at Saks Fifth Avenue online and Barneys.

If you have something particular in mind, we suggest contacting a reliable sales person to keep an eye out for your anticipated purchase. Last season, Chanel didn't take a second markdown and many stores-- including Bloomingdales-- were stuck with racks and racks of winter clothing.
