The It-it: J Crew Pixie Pants

As much I've tired, I've had a hard time fitting into the J. Crew look. Maybe it's too preppy or maybe it's too mainstream. In the meantime, the jewelry keeps me coming back again and again.

Recently, while in a pinch, I ran into the Madison Avenue boutique and asked for a legging or a pair of tight black pants. The sales person declared she had the perfect solution, Pixie Pants. The pants fall into a category between a riding pant and legging, which is perfect for cooler months. They are also substantial enough to be worn to the office.

I can't tell you how addicted I am to my Pixie pants. They have become a staple of my wardrobe and I've insisted that all my friends purchase at least one pair. So far, everyone is thrilled! The pants retail for $88 but J. Crew often has 30% off sales, which brings the total to just $64. They are currently sold out online but are stocked at many boutiques in Manhattan.

They do tend to run large, so go a size smaller. I can't say enough good things about Pixie pants.

Weekend Shopping: Manhattan Vintage

Normally we won’t pay to shop, but the Manhattan Vintage Clothing Show and Sale promises more than an everyday shopping experience. This Friday and Saturday, patrons can enjoy a veritable history of haute designer labels and a special exhibit featuring Christian Lacroix. Our experience shopping the show last year was mixed. Be forewarned there are many booths to peruse for unique vintage finds, so be sure to pace yourself!

The first thing to keep in mind is that some of the vintage designer pieces will be as expensive, if not more so than current designs. The trade off is you will never have to worry about another woman arriving at an event in the same dress. We saw lots of vintage Emilio Pucci and Missoni print dresses last year, but they were a bit too pricey in the $500 to $1000 range. There were also a number of classic Chanel boucle wool knit separates and suits at about the same price range, which is too extreme considering increasing Chanel retail prices.

Be on the lookout for the accessories booths. The selection of classic Chanel flap bags, Hermes Birkin and Kelly bags, vintage Bottega Veneta intrecciato purses and Louis Vuitton bags and trunks are unmatched. Many limited editions and rare colors and styles are available, with price tags to match. Some of the booth owners may be willing to negotiate a bit on price.

The major highlight from last year was our $50 fur find. Granted, a hook closure needed to be replaced and a cleaning was in order, but this chic short fur jacket with classic lines was a steal. There were a variety of short fur jackets under $200, although we didn’t see any long fur strollers. With a little TLC your vintage cheap fur find can become your winter style staple.

The Manhattan Vintage Clothing Show and Sale is the perfect blend of exhibit and flea market. It is a weekend entertainment trip well worth the $15 admission after our $5 off coupon.

Cobra Starship x Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Week

For the past several seasons American Express has made a effort to give their card members access to the most well guarded velvet ropes, Fashion Week. This season is no different and we are sure that that this promotion will make feel "Na Na Na Na Na."

Cobra Starship will be performing live during a Tommy Hilfiger fashion show on Thursday, February 16 at 6:30pm. The fashion and music runway spectacle will present Hilfiger’s Spring 2012 campaign featuring “The Hilfigers”— the fictional American family. (Apparently, Tommy's real family apparently didn't make the cut).

Tickets are available now exclusively through American Express. Seats are being sold for $150 and $90 depending how close you want to be to the runway. There is also a $7 service fee and $3 facility fee. In addition to the fashion show, the package includes a cocktail party and $100 vouchers to be used in-store at select Tommy Hilfiger locations, which essentially defrays almost the entire cost of the event.

TJ Maxx Spring Bling

It's the start of the retail spring season, which means off-price retails have a fresh shipment of discounted designer loot. The timing couldn't be better for those wanting to look great during fashion week without spending even a waif's weight in gold.

TJ Maxx stores have received a new shipment of designer goodies that are sure to hit the mark. While some items may be past season, there are lots of great basics from which to choose. We found a couple of Givenchy leather handbags priced between $700 to $1000, a Celine slouchy leather tote was $800, a classic black leather Prada hobo was $1200 and a brown leather Dolce & Gabbana tote is $600. Jimmy Choo fans won't want to miss the leather bags priced at $800.

The Runway, TJ Maxx's designer ready-to-wear section, is largely hit or miss. We spotted a great Versace white linen bustier dress for $500 and a back-plunging M Missoni number for $250. There are a variety of drapey Helmut Lang dresses now $79 to $150, as well as a cute embroidered Marc by Marc Jacobs strapless dress for $300.

For a more polished look, pair the $80 bright pink Kate Spade shell under the $200 Valentino pinstripe blazer. Pull on a pair of skinny jeans and you're set for a day of back-to-back shows.

While it may be tempting to only shop the more organized Runway department, be sure to check out the separate clearance racks. TJ Maxx has taken their final markdown on lots of designer merchandise, which you can recognize by the lavender tags with yellow sale stickers. With a bit of determination you can find M Missoni and Versace pants for $44, Ralph Lauren Black Label separates for under $50, Opening Ceremony pants and blazers under $34, Armani Collezioni velvet jackets for $299 and Marc Jacobs jackets priced between $119 and $149.

While it may take a bit of effort, even an intern can afford to look great during fashion week with these prices. If you're shopping strategically, we suggest making starting at the TJ Maxx on West 57th Street, which stocks the store with the Hearst magazine editors in mind. Then check the TJ Maxx on Columbus and 99th Street, which is large enough to contain a separated Runway section.

D. Porthault Semi-Annual Sale

D. Porthault sells some of the most beautiful embellished linens and home furnishings. We especially love the hand hand-embroidered motifs but the prices are another story.

Perhaps the D. Porthault semi-annual sale is enough of a discount to get you to update your whites. Through February 4th the store is discounting selected printed and embroidered bed linens, terry towels, table linens, and assorted other products 40% to 80% off. For example, a tiger print queen bedroom set with four pieces is $660 from $1100 and a hand painted floral bath sheets are $186 from $310.

There is a place. Hidden in a nondescript building in the East Village. This place, contains a closet. Not just any closet, but a closet that your designer, name-dropping brain can't even begin to comprehend. It's a closet that appears to contain every Manolo-Louboutin-Chanel-Balmain-Lanvin item that's ever been created. Ever!

The Alrbight Fashion Library is a 2,600-sq-ft loft space that is home to more than 25,000 couture dresses and 8,000 pairs of shoes. It's all there, in this closet. Normally, this fashion fantasy is utilized by movie makers and reality star stylists but right now you can shop the Albright Fashion Library during their sample sale.

Women’s clothing, outerwear and shoes are all reduced to 90% off. Dresses that retail from $900 to $2900 are $290. The IT-It: Drybar

I remember hearing the term wet bar as a child and imagining a bartender spraying customers with a soft drink hose. When I recently heard about Drybar my imagination was almost as naive: A bar with no alcohol? Yikes!

Thank goodness my conjecture was wrong on both accounts. Drybar may be the coolest beauty concept ever. The beauty chain offers flat rate $40 hair blowouts. There's no, extra $10 for long hair or unexpected fees for extra curly or thick hair. Yup, it's just $40! Oh, oh, did we mention the Shirley Temple service? It's for kids 10 and under and costs just $24. (Blowouts and lunch with Eloise anyone?)

So as curly haired girls have been rejoicing on the west coast and in the Village, uptown gals can start taking advantage of the Drybar treatment too. Today Drybar opened in the Le Parker Meridien, on West 59th Street. The space is almost as hot as a Twin Turbo 2800.

Scheduling an appointment is as easy as the price. Just go to the company’s online scheduler and select the Le Parker Meridien location from the drop down menu and pick a time that's convenient to you. Even better, walk-ins are welcome too.

The Most Expensive Stores in the US

Unsurprisingly Madison Avenue is home to many of the country's most expensive retail stores, according to analysis company Bundle. Ten of the 25 stores, listed in the report are located on Madison Avenue and 13 are located in NYC.

Oscar de la Renta takes home top prize for the boutique with the highest average receipt of $3,217. Georgio Armani, which has several locations throughout Manhattan, including Madison Avenue, is second with average receipts of $2,881. At the bottom of the list is Prada, where customers tend to spend about $1,430. Wedding emporiums Vera Wang and Kleinfeld Bridal both made it to the impressive list, which is just goes to show the buying power of the blushing bride.

Bundle compiled their list of the most expensive shops in America by looking at the average receipt amounts based on millions of transactions done in clothing stores across the U.S from April 2010 to May 2011. Wholesalers, manufacturers and big department stores were filtered out of the list. We imagine that's why high priced stores like Hermes and Louis Vuitton are not included in the top 25 list.

Although Madison Avenue is an expensive place to shop, it's just as easy to save a bundle. As we know, just about all these stores reduce merchandise to about half-off but that may mean you end up buying twice as much!

We found $225 Rag & Bone jeans for $35! (Makes you question the price of denim.) A $1350 Herve Leger dress is $400 and a $1300 Zac Posen dress is $390.

While you're sifting through sale racks don't overlook the jewelry. While sorting through random bits and pieces we found $350 Dannijo earrings for just a $100. We'll call it a happy Valentines Day gift to me!

Season End Sales: Barney's vs Bergdrofs

As department stores blow out the remains of winter we plan on finding statement pieces that will become the cornerstones of our wardrobe. If you can find a Chanel sweater for under $1000 grab it. The same goes for Jason Woo print dress at under $270. (Makes the upcoming Target collab seem overpriced, huh?) Bergdorf Goodman and Barney's are both offering discounts of 75% off but you're going to want to read or overview before heading out in these frigid temperatures.

The last cuts at the department stores are always our favorite time for steeply discounted brick-and-mortar shopping. Stop into Barney’s by Tuesday before they send their 75% off designer clothing and 60% off shoes to the outlets and warehouse.

Haute ready-to-wear is mixed throughout the floors. Some sales racks like Lanvin, Marni and Dries Van Noten are alongside new resort collections, but many are in the mixed designer sales racks near the back. We spotted a black and white color block Derek Lam dress for $249 and a Fendi draped silk dress for $669. A Balmain draped red silk blouse is now $639 from $2550. With a bit of persistence you can also find discounted Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Mugler and Givenchy. Our favorite find was a chic $4990 Yves Saint Laurent wool jacket marked down to $1990.

If you’re a fan of Chloe and Lanvin shoes, it may be worth your while to stop by the shoe salon where we spotted a $670 pair of Lanvin jewel embellished satin ballet slippers for $269. We found a pair of Louboutin suede and mesh maryjanes for just $339. (A prime example why despise waiting on sample sale lines.)

While Barney’s final sale is winding down, Bergdorf’s has just begun their end of season 75% off sale. Check in with your favorite designers at their boutiques where clothing is marked 60% to 75% off retail.

At Chanel, we found some lovely knits and sweaters as well as a couple of signature wool boucle dresses for $2389 from $5990. Tom Ford is also at a 60% cut and there was a good selection of sales merchandise, including his popular lace and velvet pieces. A $2290 black lace blouse is now $909 while Emma Stone’s structured black lace red-carpet dress and a white long sleeve version is now $3499.

You will have some luck finding 75% off clothing from Gucci, Marc Jacobs, Christian Dior and Fendi in their individual boutiques, but we suggest heading to the mixed designer rack areas too. In the mix you find deals like a Jason Wu silk print dresses ($269), Rick Owens drapery silk tops ($159) and even a fur collared Givenchy jacket ($959). We also spotted lots of Stella McCartney, Emilio Pucci, Narcisco Rodriguez and Roland Mouret.

If you are still looking for your shoe fix, you can now find all designer shoes marked down 55%, including Christian Louboutin and Chanel. Overall, there is a much better selection at Bergdorf’s than at Barneys, especially for Manolo Blahnik fans.

I Spy: Monclers on Sale

Readers often ask us about getting discounts on hard-to-find-on-sale items. Uggs are one, Chanel is another but most readers want to get their Monclers for less. We'll give it to you straight, it's not easy. But if you're looking, this is the time of year to find them.

During our most recent tour de Barney's we found children's and men's Moncler jackets and coats for 50% off. Most of the children's sizes were small but there were a few still left in size two and under and fours and sixes for both girls and boys.

The men's jackets are a bit more sparse but there are a few still left on the racks. Unfortunately, the only the Moncler Gamme Bleu jackets were marked down. All but one was sold out but you can ask a sales associate to keep an eye on returns. Over at Bergdorf Goodman, you can find a select assortment of the goose down jackets discounted. Here the markdown is only about 40% but it's still worth stalking the store.

Nordstrom.com has a handful of the Italian made jackets on coats marked down 33% but we would also suggest calling the department stores directly to see what inventory might still be available.

The Brooklyn-based, high-end children's store, Tuesdays Child has a better selection of coats and jackets but the discount is just 20%. The uptown boutique, Small Change has a decent selection on sale but the discount isn't very much either.

If all else fails, try calling the Moncler at Woodbury Common (845-928-3045). But whatever you do, don't don't don't Google "Moncler discounts" or "Moncler sale." Doing so will result in a list of counterfeit jackets. And even a discount of 90% on those would be overpaying.

Century 21 Sale Time

Despite being world renowned as the place for discount designer deals, Century 21 can be a difficult store to shop. The disheveled racks can be daunting and tourist shoppers can be, lets say, pushy. But when Century has a sale we just can’t resist the downtown flagship.

When you arrive, go straight to the third floor and turn right to find the European designer racks marked an additional 50% to 65% off. We suggest starting with the 65% off racks near the registers, where Giorgio Armani fans will be thrilled to find a couple racks discounted 85%. A chic long sleeve Alberta Ferretti dress is $161 from $459, while a silk sheath from their more affordable Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti line is only $70! A variety of Love Moschino and Cheap and Chic dresses ranged from $70 to $130 - even less than Aeffe’s sample sale prices. Overall, we did not see many original collection pieces, but there were plenty of designer’s secondary lines to shop.

Just looking at the wall of discounted mixed designer tops induces anxiety and should be avoided unless you have hours to shop. We found the racks of designer skirts and pants to be more fruitful, with a $128 Carolina Herrera skirt, $200 Lanvin silk trouser shorts and $50 Dolce Gabbana satin pants as highlights. Unfortunately, we saw more damaged clothing than not. Be sure to carefully inspect your pieces prior to checkout.

Before heading downstairs, don’t miss the 65% cut for designer jackets. Furs and shearlings remain at 50%. Skip the 2nd floor entirely since none of the designer accessories in the showcases are reduced. Make your way to the basement, and you will see walls of mostly Italian designer shoes for an additional 40% to 75% off. Walls of winter footwear are worth browsing for the prospect of $160 Derek Lam booties or $155 fur wrapped Cinzia Araia boots. On the racks, we saw lots of Missoni multicolored pumps ($175), Manolo slingbacks ($125) and Givenchy suede heeled sandals ($120).

A word for the wise – head to Century 21 sooner rather than later before all the best steeply discounted designer cloths are gone! Uptown gals should save on cab fare and head to the spacious and organized Upper West Side store, unless you miss fighting for your fashion downtown.

Mikimoto Sale Overview

The Mikimoto sale has been a longtime favorite of Madison Avenue Spy readers but much has changed over the years. When we arrived, midday the line to get into the showroom was over two hours and the discounts on the most desirable jewelry fell into the 50% off category rather than the 70% off of past seasons.

First the line. The wait snaked around the entire fourth floor of the building so that the front of the line met the back of the line. This is not a situation a busy New Yorker likes to confront. After a quick phone call we were in despite snares from others.

Most of the higher-end Mikimoto jewelry is 50% off but some items were priced up to 70% off. Even after the discount prices range from about $2000 for a small pendant and go up to about $15,000 for larger necklaces. We are especially fond of the the 10mm golden south sea pearl strands that normally retail for $25,000 but are discounted 50% off.

If you're looking to spend a bit less look for the Blue Lagoon collection, which is more affordable to many customers. Blue Lagoon is normally found in higher volume jewelry retailers like Zales. In this section you can find pearl pendants for under $200 and bracelets for under $1500.

We suggest going to the sale towards Friday when the wait will be much less. We also suggest skipping the sale altogether if you're looking for less expensive pearls. You can find better quality for similar prices from a trusted local jewelry store.

Price are reduced up to 70% off and there are so many wonderful pieces from which to choose. Manolos Now 50% Off

If we knew anything about football we might be able to correlate the big Giant win to Manolo Blahnik's second markdown. But we don't. So we will have to be content in just saying, Manolo Blahnik has started their second markdown today.

Th It-it: The Perfect Red Lip

There’s nothing quite like a pop-of-color --or POC, in fashion talk-- to help combat the winter blues. None is more uplifting than the perfect red lip. Before you start you will need to find the perfect matte finish, high pigment lip color to achieve a look that's classy, not trashy.

We found the holy grail in Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl ($24). The shade is a universally flattering bright crimson that has incredible staying power.

In true MadSpy fashion, we wanted to test the wearability. The application is fool-proof since the jumbo crayon affords more precision than traditional lipsticks. Unlike most lip pencils, Nars has a creamy matte finish withVitamin E, so it won’t dry out your lips or require a top layer of balm.

Our bright red pout lasted through an entire decadent meal at Il Mulino and a hot, meltdown-inducing session at Earth Yoga. After an hour of hot Vinyasa, our Dragon Girl lips were surprisingly perfect!

When wearing red, be sure to take a hint from the 1950’s bombshells, and keep the rest of your makeup soft and neutral to bring out your inner diva. Also, a bit of concealer around the lip never hurts.

Special Update: Last week we wrote about weightless totes and mentioned the
Celine version ($1600). Today we spotted some at the TJ Maxx in Colombus Square. The hunter green colored tote was priced at just $799. Not too bad, huh?

Bloomingdale's Consolidation Sale

If you've walked the floors of Bloomindale's lately, you will notice that much of the sale merchandise is missing. We all know it didn't disappear. Like Saks, the uptown department store is gathering sale inventory from all over the country for their bi-annual consolidation sale.

The end-of-season blow-out will start on Sunday, January 15th and the markdown will be up to 80% off. The sale will include (but not be limited to) Marc Jacobs, Yigal, Moschino, Sonia Rykiel and Burberry London.

Out of town shoppers are out of luck on this one. The sale will be exclusively at Bloomingdale's 59th Street location.

Saks Consolidation Sale

It’s that time of year again! All of the designer leftovers from Saks Fifth Avenue stores on the east coast are making their way to the 9th floor of the Fifth Avenue flagship. The discount is set to replicate the after Christmas sale, which was 70% off.

The consolidation sale officially starts on Friday, January 13th but we took a sneak peak into the set-up. We spotted lots of Stella McCartney, Temperly, Moschino, Yigal Azrouel, TSE and Donna Karen. Head directly to the designer boutiques if you're looking for reduced Chanel and Dior, which has price cuts of 60%.

During the summer consolidation sale we found an Oscar dress for $337, a McQueen dress for $418 and a Dolce & Gabbana tweed pencil skirt for just $188. In addition, we found lots of exquisite evening wear including, a tailored black Valentino cocktail dress that is now $777 and a unique embellished Monique Lhuillier number for $641.

Although the sale doesn't officially start until Friday, we are told that the black curtains will open sooner. We suggest hitting the sale on Thursday if you want to get first dibs. Internet shoppers can usually find similar deals online but there usually isn't the same variety of high-end designer merchandise.

Michael Kors Takes Steuben

This fall we posted about Steuben shutting down its factory and its flagship store on Madison Avenue. New Years marked the end of that crystal dynasty but that real estate will not stay vacant for long.

Michael Kors will be taking over the space that the century-old brand formerly occupied at 667 Madison, across from Barney's. Kors already has an existing store at Madison and 60th but we imagine that location close once the new build-out is complete. A rep from Michael Kors did not answer specific questions but it appears as if the Steuben location is considerably larger.

In addition to the Kors expansion, there seems to be a growing trend for brands to have two uptown locations. Many luxury icons seem to enjoy a flagship on or close to Fifth Avenue that attracts tourists from all around the world in addition to the neighborhood clientele that's found on Madison.

Most recently, Bottega Veneta opened a Madison Avenue location in addition to their Fifth Avenue flagship. Armani, Cavalli, Chanel, Cartier, Prada, Gucci and, yes, Juicy Couture all have mid-town and Madison Ave locations.

Perhaps that's a luxury that the luxury brands can afford.

Crazy Gaga Workshop Sale

We have to admit that the Barney's Lady Gaga Workshop was a genius concept. It was imaginative and unique. We also have to admit that the prices of the novelty items included in the collaboration were also imaginative and unique.

Well, all that has changed. Barney's has slashed the prices of their Gaga Christmas workshop. The discount ranges from 40% to 70% off. The best deal is the candy. For example, candy finger rings which were insanely $28 and are now $9. You might want to bypass the stale candy and opt for the popular Deborah Lippman 3D Holographic nail polish. The duo set of polish is now $29 from $40.

Another good bet is the Gaga Workshop x Barney's tote, which is $14 from $38. (Be careful, not to confuse this tote with the Barney's x Gaga tote, which is still $26 from $38.) The flame press-on nails are a personal favorite, but are still a frivolous $157 from $225 and you're cousin from Pittsberg won't get it. Instead, send her a bite of the big apple by way of the deep V-neck Gaga tee $33 from $75.

Although the discounts are attractive, we bet that many of these items will show up for even less money at Barney's outlets across the country. Anyone want to send me a note when they find those crazy nails for $2.25?

The It-it: The Weightless Tote

We can't say it was unexpected. There was bound to be a backlash against the bigger and heavier bags that have been dominating the streets of Via Fashionable. A 35cm Birkin weights almost three pounds and that's before it's loaded with your wallet, phone, lipstick, keys and other junk.

Handbag designers are increasingly adding fashionable lightweight bags to their collections. The styles, colors and quality go beyond the Goyard tote or the LV Neverfull. These bags are are wonderfully basic. There's no lux lining, zipper or hardware but the leather is supple and the lines are classic. Best of all, they weigh next to nothing, which means you can feel free to pile on the junk.

Celine's version comes in a variety of colors and is priced at about $1600. At Bergdorf Goodman we found a YSL tote that has girly contrasting tassels that retails for $1500. Balenciaga's Papier tote is $1350 and Givenchy offers another option with their Antigona for $1280.

Although these tote bags are light, they are not cheap. A good shopping tote will get kicked around and faithfully used and may show their wear quickly. Less expensive options are also abundant. We just suggest bolting for an interesting color and making sure your tote is weightless.

Marc Jacobs 70% Letdown

When we first caught wind the Marc Jacobs collection would be a hefty 70% off We couldn’t help but get excited when we caught wind of the Marc Jacobs collection discount. The markdown is hefty at 70% off but upon arrival at the store we were sorely disappointed.

The sale consists only of two small racks of fall and winter 2011 merchandise. There is also a small assortment of booties and pumps below that have been marked down. The racks of clothing were sparse at best, with our best find being a boucle wool $1800 peacoat marked down to $540. It is truly hit or miss because the styles and sizing is extremely limited. A sales associate hinted there “might” be some extra sizes out back but it seemed unlikely.

We also spotted a few $7900 retail sheared fox cropped jackets on the markdown rack. Even with the discount there are better fur investments for your money. Looking down at the sale shoes, it was easy to see why these stragglers were still on the sales floor – not the most desirable styles. Sadly, no tall boots were to be found.

Bottom line: if you had your heart set on getting a discounted Stam handbag or other accessories, don’t bother. We suggest calling ahead if you had your heart set on a specific item.

Scoop Sale

Scoop just added another 30% markdown to their already reduced merchandise. The overall markdown is under 50% and some items are discounted up to 75% off.

The store is stocked with a reasonable amount of Zac Posen, Missoni, Michael Kors and 3.1 Philip Lim. We found a $725 sweater dress marked down to $289. With the additional 30% discount the final price is just $200. A Kimberly Ovitz dress is $310 from $565 and $1000 Alejandro Ingelmo heels are just $310.

Even the Scoop sales woman admitted this was a very good discount. Next stop is the Scoop warehouse sale but we think this markdown is both civilized and worthy of two thumbs up. You know, if did such a thing.

Manolo Blahnik First Markdown

The new year means many things to different people. To us, the new year is the start to Manolo season. Every year, the Manolo Blahnik boutique takes their first markdown following the big ball drop.

Currently, shoes and boots from the winter collection are now discounted to 33% off. This markdown should not cause too much excitement considering that department stores are running sales where Manolos are 60% off.

It's quite easy to find the perfect party outfit now that sales are dropping faster than the Swarovski ball. Sequins at 70% off are more abundant than confetti in Times Square. Making the perfect end-of-year celebratory plans may not be so simple. Actually, celebrating the end of 2011 may cost you more than a pair of Chanel heels-- and that would be at full price.

The Price Hike, a blog that monitors the prices at high-end restaurant, recently posted about the real cost of dining on New Year's Eve. The "real cost" is calculated by adding the price of tax and a 20% tip to the cost of a tasting menu. Would you believe that the real cost of dinner for two at Eleven Madison Park on New Year's is $1482. That's $1160 more than the price a couple would pay on any other night throughout the year.

Yes, Eleven Madison Park, is offering an amazing menu. According to the expert blogger there will be one course of white truffles, two courses of black truffles, foie gras, lobster, black sturgeon caviar, and many more freebies. Still it's a whole lot of money. No matter how you choose to celebrate your New Year's, we suggest checking out The Price Hike's analysis and making the same calculations before you confirm your reservations. Reed Krakoff Second Markdown

Reed Krakoff boutique has taken a second markdown on their winter collection. Bags, shoes, clothing and small leather goods are 60% off retail.

While browsing through the boutique we found the classic boxer tote with a shearling front for $596 from $1490, a perfect-for-New-Years python and chainmail dress for $2796 from $6990 and suede ankle boots for $290 from $725. If you're still looking for last minute holiday gifts you might want to consider grabbing the RK Ribbon wallet, which is just $116 from $290.

Although most Reed Krakoff shoppers favor the leather goods we think that the clothing is really underestimated. Pieces like a fine wool wrap skirt are a true value at just $236 (from $590). So the moral of this story is look at the bags but buy the cloths!

Shopping at Woodbury Common

While some are celebrating 12-days of Christmas, we are still scouting out the best post-season shopping. Since we have already scoured our neighborhood and the vicinity, we thought we would take a little road trip to see what deals can be found at the outlets.

At the Woodbury Common Premium Outlets the deals are about the same as they have been throughout the month of December. Many sales associates say that the merchandise has been pretty well picked over. And then there are the crowds. If you're looking for a more sane shopping experience, local experts suggest waiting to at least mid-week to head North. The next big outlet markdown will come during President's weekend. In the meantime, this is what we found.

Bottega Veneta
Select bags an additional 50% off and clothing is an extra 80% off. Sizes on clothing are running low and the bags with the highest discount are not the most desirable styles.

The Prada outlet has really locked down their discount policy. Right now the markdown is just 30% to 40% off retail prices. We are told that there are only additional discounts in November and June. We suggest skipping this crowded outlet store and keeping an eye on the boutique sale, which is poised for another discount later this month.

There is no arguing that this is the busiest shopping season on of the year. This year, Monday was the federal Christmas day-off, which meant that more people were free to shop December 26th sales.

The New York Post (12/26/11) dove reporting on the into what's officially known as the biggest return day.

The unusual occurrence of this year’s Sunday Christmas has most families enjoying an extra day off after yesterday’s festivities — and offers a “defining moment” for businesses eager to end the year in the black, said retail-industry expert Lila Delilah.

“Dec. 26 is way better than Black Friday,” said Delilah, founder of Madison Avenue Spy, a shopping blog. “Dec. 26 is to move merchandise. It’s do-or-die for the merchants . . . They close the books and have to answer to their shareholders.” Earlier this week, The New York Post (12/23/11) credited your favorite deal catcher with finding the best of 11th-hour pre-Christmas bargains.
From Macy’s to Saks to Modell’s, prices are being slashed on every kind of gift that can fit in Santa’s sleigh.

Deal blogger Lila Delilah at MadisonAvenueSpy.com has been keeping an eye on the best deals — and may have gotten one of the biggest bargains at The Gap, where she got some kids’ gloves for 75 percent off.

“They had gloves, children’s mittens, for $20 and I got them for $5,” she said.High-end stores in the fashionable shopping areas of Midtown and the Upper East Side were also boasting big bargains.

At Yves Saint Laurent, prices were down 40 percent. At Bloomingdale’s, shoppers were finding prices cut by 25 to 50 percent.

At Salvatore Ferragamo, $760 men’s dress-leather zip boots were marked down to $494.

While you were preparing for the big holidays the New York Post (12/18/11) took a closer look at the typical mall stores that have opened on Fifth Avenue. Forever 21, Uniqlo, Hollister, and H&M have all opened flagships on the avenue that is better known for $2000 blouses than $20 shirts.
“I thought we got rid of Disney and the NBA Store, and we were going to get some grand, luxury emporium,” sniffs Lila Delilah, the Upper East Side blogger behind shopping site Madison Avenue Spy. “Things were looking up. And all of a sudden, it was Hollister and Uniqlo. It’s mystifying. The walk from Bergdorf to Saks used to be a dazzling window shopping experience, and now I find it a little more like the new 42nd Street.”Most experts believe that Fifth Avenue's transition to a destination of high-low shopping is a good thing. After all, shoppers are increasingly matching their J.Crew tee with their Armani suits. Do you agree?

Saks After Holiday Sale

If we had just one store to shop in on December 26th, we would choose Saks Fifth Avenue. Every year the store hosts an early hour doorbuster/ shopping event where additional discounts bring the total markdown to about 70% off.

The sale usually only lasts until noon and the crowds can be vicious. We suggest shopping on Friday and Saturday and finding a helpful sales person to pre-sale your items. This is one way to avoid the chaos and enjoy the extra savings.

P.S. Saks closes at 6pm on Christmas Eve but those last shopping hours are always thrilling and create wonderful holiday memories.

Barney's Scrambling to Fill Custmer Orders

When we posted about Barney's second markdown, we also warned warned online shoppers that orders on popular items are often canceled. Going to the store is virtually the only way to guarantee you get your purchase.

Even without having a crystal ball we were pretty accurate about the future for online shoppers. According to Racked, the luxury department store emailed customers' that their orders were canceled and that they would not be receiving their purchases.

While doing some last minute holiday shopping we spied dozens of "corporate" employees scurrying throughout the store to pull product to fulfill online orders. We questioned a well-intentioned employee who told us that skinny on Barney's antiquated inventory and fulfilment system.

There is warehouse that houses all the products you see online, our source explained. However, there is only one inventory system and when the warehouse runs out of an item the product is pulled from the shelves of the Madison Avenue Barneys. The problem is that in-store shoppers often purchase the item before it actually gets pulled for the web order. In these instances the online shopper loses out.

For now, we overheard that Barneys was offering disappointed online shoppers $100 gift cards and personal shopping assistance to pick alternative holiday gifts. We think that everyone would be much happier if Barneys spent a little less time creating Gaga installations and updated their technology infrastructures to, lets say... 2009!

Gift Ideas: Last Minute Heat is On

It's just days before Christmas and the heat is on high to find the perfect gift for those hard-shop-for loved ones and familial obligations. Don't worry, we have ideas for your catty sister-in-law and your cheap cousin.

While shopping the on the first floor of ABC Carpet & Home we came across the most beautiful glass bracelets. When we looked close we couldn't believe that they were only $2 each. This should leave a few dollars left over so that you can get one of those color reform rugs hanging in the front of the store.

We love the irony of fashioning your catty sister-in-law in Norma Kamali cat eye glasses. The cool shades are on sale for $75 from $250. Just imagine yourself laughing every time you see her wearing them. Now, that's priceless.

Deborah Lippman sparkle polishes are the perfect gift to get your loved one or family friend a head start on the new year celebrations. We've already scoured Madison Avenue and the Meatpacking District for great deals. The next logical stop is a virtual tour along Fifth Avenue and across 57th Street. Highlights include a markdown at Dior, which is very much under wraps and the sad news that there will be no future Ferragamo warehouse sales. Shall we take a moment to morn? Ok, done.

There's $50 and under category, which contains an assortment of smaller items like bubble shorts, foil leggings and bikini tops. There's also the $100 and under sectuib that contains sunglasses and other assorted item. In the $200 and under category you can grab yourself a cool camo coat or gown. And of course, the $500 and "Splurge" areas will buy you some pretty cool Norma Kamali fashions. We are told that more items will likely be added to the sale section after the holidays. Health Watch: Skiing Safty Tips

'Tis the season for overeating, gift giving and, oh yes, our favorite, vacation. Before you hit the double black dimaond, however, you might want to consider a few expert tips.

Dr. Jerry Lubliner, chief of orthopedics and sports medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center suggests, taking it easy when you first arrive at your ski destination, especially if it's your first time out for the season. "On your second day, cut your skiing down to half a day. It takes 48 hours or more to get acclimated to the thin air and altitude. The second and third days are when fatigue sets in and many injuries occur."

It's essential that you stretch. When muscles are stiff, injuries happen, so spend at least ten minutes warming up. Pay close attention to stretching the quads and calves, which can be easily stressed on the slopes.

If you do get hurt or feel pain don't ignore it, says Dr. Lubliner, who has 27 years of experience in orthopedics. Remember the easy acronym "RICE"-- Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation, but injuries like a broken bone need to be addressed immediately.

If you are diagnosed with a ligament or meniscal tear, don't feel pressured to have surgery at your the local resort hospital. "Most injuries need time for the body to regain motion before surgery. It's best to wait 10 to 14 days for swelling to subside before heading to the operating table," Dr. Lubliner cautions.

Dr. Lubliner says that he often has patients where ski partners, spouses and friends ski into one another causing injuries that require surgery. So watch where you're skiing!

Shopping for the men in your life--your father, husband, brother, brother's boyfriend-- is never easy. They don't usually like sparkly high heels and that's where we usually get stumped. So after some searching we came up with a couple of ideas that fit into a range of budgets and personalities.

First, we are crazy for the new concept Tasting Room. The site/company allows you to order boxes of wine samplers. For example there's a Sonoma Zinfandel sampler, a Chef Batali selection and a Tour of Napa Valley sampler. Each box contains six small bottles of wine perfect for a taste or sharing a taste. The samplers range from $20 to $50 and there are lots of promotions and online coupons that bring the price down even further.

Okay, we all know that Moncler is the urban "it" winter jacket for men, women and children but what do you do if you're looking for something a little less ubiquitous? We found Duvetica men's jackets. These high shine, fun style, jackets are made of goose down and are also reversible. We especially love the colored zippers and the ability to reverse to camo. Barneys is the first department store in our area to start their second markdown. Right now, fall and winter merchandise is 60% off. The sale includes small selection of Louboutin and a wide assortment of Manolos.

If you are serious about purchasing a hot item at these newly discounted prices, we suggest going to the store or at least speaking to a sales associate. The Barneys online store is famous for their unreliable inventory counts. Unfortunately, we often hear about customers' orders being cancelled several days and even weeks later.

Pucci Moving Onto Madison

It appears as if the old Yves Saint Laurent location will be occupied by another 70s fashion icon--Emilio Pucci! Yes, Pucci is moving their swirly, colorful prints from their quaint 64th Street location and spilling their cheerful colors right on 855 Madison at 71st Street.

Last year, YSL left the location after more than 41-years. This move will give the Pucci brand much higher visibility on Madison and could be seen as a possible marketing strategy change. We wouldn't be surprised if there was a collaboration in the future based on the popularity of Missoni-Target. Can anyone envision a Pucci-Target?!

In other news, Valentino has officially opened across the street from the space they occupied for more than 15 years at Madison and 65th. For a period of time the brand was running shop out of the Regency Hotel on Park Avenue. We are told that this location is only temporary.

Gift Guide: An Evening Bag For Her

It's that time of year again and no, we are not talking about the holidays. We are referring to party time. Yes, your girlfriend/ sister/ mother have all enough clothing and shoes to dress a small village but she may need a little help in the evening handbag department.

For your evening starter kit, we suggest going with something small and black and classic. Intermidate-level night time gals can likely use a edgier and more interesting statement piece. For the most basic and versitle bag we suggest the Chanel East West ($2100). It will never go out of style and it's single chain allows the bag to be used as a shoulder bag or it can be tucked in to be transform into a clutch.

If you're not looking to make such an investment, we suggest looking at this large clutch from Zara $129. It is simple, classic and has great lines.

Those who already posses the basic bags for evening can be a little more daring. How about this Alexander McQueen knuckle clutch ($1995) or this metal plate clutch ($56 from Top Shop could do the trick.

Now your woman has a proper place for her phone, lipstick and keys but you still need to take care of the entertainment!

Roger Vivier Sample Sale Review

Beware, reading this post and going to the Roger Vivier sample sale may cost you $1000 or more. If that statement doesn't scare you, then you will be thrilled to know about the vast assortment of products at Vivier's first ever sample sale.

The Viv sale is well stocked with an incredible assortment of shoes including, classic buckle flats, elaborate heels, sandals and boots. No season was left out and no style or print is omitted. There are even in-season styles, which have the tiny square buckle. In addition, there are lots of bags, including evening clutches and larger shopping totes. There is also a small but nice assortment of small leather goods and jewelry.

The pricing of most shoes are about 50% off retail, which isn't fabulous but still a considerable savings. Most classic buckle styles are about $275. Sandals are a bit less at $220 and boots will set you back $420 to $600. Non-buckly shoes are an additional 20% off. Bags cost between $425 for a long classic clutch to near $800 for lager bags. Near the register, you will find small accessories and jewelry, which make a fine holiday gift. Gloves are $200 and most jewelry pieces are $100. Wallets and cosmetic cases are also $200.

While each item does not seem overly expensive, it's hard not to grab a bag and at least two pair of shoes. By the time you're at the register the damage is over $1000. For others, it was several times that amount.

The sale runs through Sunday and we wouldn't be surprised if further reductions were made. If you can, restrain yourself for later in the sale.The positive side is that a portion of all the proceeds will go towards New Yorkers For Children. You wouldn't want to deprive the children, right? So, shop it up!

Roger Vivier Sample Sale

Roger Vivier is famous for not letting their precious square-toe shoes go at discounted prices. It's not surprising considering that the company is owned by Tod's, which is another brand that doesn't love hosting sales.

Fans of Vivier will be thrilled to learn the the brand is hosting their first sample sale at Soiffer Haskin. Shoes and handbags will be included but we are also hoping to find sunglasses and other accessories. We would love to speculate on the markdown and product assortment but it would just be a shot in the dark. Instead, we'll keep you updated and post our findings.

Christian Louboutin Private Pre-Sale

For those of us not lucky enough to get an invite to the Christian Louboutin sample sale, we now have the option of shopping their private pre-sale event. Fans of the iconic red-soled heels can enjoy champagne and macarons as they browse the sales merchandise.

Last year, the discount for shoes was 30% to 40% (right up there with the department store sales) and handbags were a deal at 50% off retail. Unlike the department stores the selection and sizes tend to be limited. If you want to get the best selection or wear a common shoe size be prepared to wait a bit. Avoid the mistake we made last year by going a bit before 5:30pm –- they closed the line 10 minutes after arrival and unfortunately we did not make the cut.

DVF Sample Sale Always Fun

This morning we hit an early preview of the Diane von Furstenberg sample sale. The good news is that prices are the same as previous seasons. The bad news is that the line is already stacking up and items are selling out.

Once inside, dresses were flying, hangers were catching and women were crowding. As usual the sweaters are in the back and the $50 samples are next to the fitting room. Sale newcomers include a great selection of bags, small accessories and winter print scarves. The scarves are a bit pricey at $65 but the bags were a big hit during the press preview. Large bags are $250, small bags are $185 and wallets are $70. The nicer chain bags are already gone, unfortunately.

You're in luck if you are looking for those big fur vests, there are still plenty. In addition, there are lots of "Saks Exclusive" pieces. You may luck out if you're shopping for generic gifts. Laptop cases/ipod cases/zip wallet are $60 and iPhone covers, pencil cases, passport covers for $20. There are also some great belts but are a bit expansive at $70 each.

Ippolita's Dazzling Sample Sale

Bling a bling a bling...

What woman doesn't deserve some new bling, especially when it's Ippolita? When we heard that Ippolita was hosting it's first ever sample sale, we knew we needed our Madison Avenue mom to come along for the review.

Though there is a line to get in (Ippolita provides free water bottles), shopping at this sample sale is as civilized as shopping in a boutique, especially since each customer has their very own sales person. With prices at 65% to 70% off retail, there are plenty of great deals on Ippolita's beautiful, easy to wear jewelry.

The fashion jewelry is the least expensive with resin bangles at $50 per piece (normally $275) and resin rings at $30 a piece. There is also a case of specially priced gold worth checking out. We found an elegant and soft gold long necklace with gem stones for $1200.

There is a huge selection of sterling silver. There are current sterling silver rings with gemstones, which retail for $300 and up and are 65% to 70% off at the sale. These sterling silver bangles retail for $295 each and at 65% off you can buy them for $103.25 each. They also have the same bangles in 18k gold which retail for $1795 and are $628.25 at the sale. We considered the silver, but couldn't resist the shiny 18k gold and we walked out with four of them dancing.

Designer jewelry at these prices? Go treat yourself - you deserve it.

The It-it: Maria Grachvogel

Although Maria Grachvogel is not a new designer, it is likely this is the first time you're hearing her name. My first introduction to the British fashion designer was while sorting through the racks of a designer dresses at a consignment sale. Stuck between dozens of Chanel and Valentino gowns I came upon a Grachvogel cocktail dress marked "sample."

The cut was immaculate and the colors were unapologetic. The winning combination reminded me of greats like McQueen and Matthew Williamson. Searching for more of the same, I headed to Bergodorf Goodman. Unfortunately, the trip was fruitless as nobody had heard of the London-based designer.

I immediately hit the web and have continued to be dazzled by Maria's designs, which also count Emma Thompson, Scarlett Johansson, Angelina Jolie, and Victoria Beckham as her fans. Although Maria Grachovogal has a large following London, her designs can only be found on ShopBop in the States.

If you are in love with her prints as much as I am, the boutique will ship internationally. We promise you won't be disapointed!

Upstairs there is a wide collection of ready-to-wear that's ripe for the picking. If you're on the fence about an item, you can wait until after Christmas. second markdown is usually 50%.

Brunello Cucinelli Sample Sale

Brunello Cucinelli is well known for their high end luxury designs and fabrics, as well as their lofty prices. At their sample sale you can save up to 60% off Italian fine cashmere. While the prices are still pretty high, you have to remember that the retail prices are significantly higher.

If you head straight into the accessories table you will find belts for as low as $100 after the discount. Keep your calculator handy as you make your way over to the shoes where sample size 37 ladies will fare best. The selection isn’t great are the prices, which are 60% off a range of $595 to $1000.

We suggest skipping the exorbitantly priced handbags and going straight to the bottoms, which are the best deals. Most of the skirts and slack are discounted to about $295, which really isn't bad considering normal Cucinelli prices. Most of the skirt sizes are a sample size 42, but there is a larger variety of sizes for slacks ranging up to size 48. Smaller sized women will have a much tougher time finding sizes.

Moving on to the star of Cucinelli-- cashmere sweaters. We are sad to say that the selection for women is quite small but if might not walk away disappointed if you're shopping for a man. Most of the cashmere are 60% off the normal range of $800 to $2300.

We also found a nice selection of wool and cashmere blend coats but they are still pricey even with the 60% discount. The retail prices in this section seemed to range from $2730 to $4140. See? Still a lot.
If you have your heart set on finding a good deal here. we suggest waiting until the last day of the sale. Further reductions are expected and should range in the 70% to 80% range. And before you leave, don’t forget catch a glimpse of the $15,000 fur vests at the register. At 80% off, one might end up being an early holiday gift to yourself!

We can't tell you how many email we have received inquiring about the Diane Von Furstenberg sample sale. There were even rumors that the bi-annual sale was canceled. (The horror!)

We are happy to announce that this year's dates have (finally) been released.Starting Tuesday, December 13 shoppers will be able to sort through racks of wrap dresses and wonderful prints that are all priced up to 75% off. Last year the prices were: $40 for tees, $80 for pants, skirts, blouses and sweaters, $125 for dresses and jackets, $150 for wrap-dresses, $250 for leather and $275 for cocktail gowns/dresses and coats. Our favorite section, however, is the $50 sample rack.

Here's a little insider tip: The DVF sale may officially start on Tuesday but at about noon on Monday friend's and family are invited to shop. By mid-afternoon, the sale is usually open to the general public. Bargain shoppers should wait until mid-week, prices usually drop along the lifespan of the sale.

The Madison Avenue Spy team is always talking about prices. What's the real value of an item? What's the markdown? What's the retail price?

When it comes to Chanel's Classic bags we even get confused. There are so many different sizes, styles and leather finishes. Even Chanel salespeople get confused. So as you jump into your holiday shopping, we offer you the Madison Avenue Spy price guide to Classic Chanel handbags.

We picked three of the most popular styles-- the Classic Flap, the Reissue and the Tote -- and priced out many of the variations. Just for fun, we also dug up prices from 2009. Although we can't fully vouch for the complete accuracy of the vintage information, we thought it would be an informative reference.

Your Designer Sale Shoe Guide

It is our favorite time of year again – shoe sale season! At this point, almost every department store has started their first markdown. Many stores started just yesterday, which means the inventory is still plentiful. Just one note, Christian Louboutin and Chanel have not been discounted anywhere. That markdown usually comes in a couple of weeks. So start putting your presale list together now!

Below is a full blown tour of all the best shoe departments and markdowns in town:

Barneys
As always, we like to start our shopping at Barney’s since their first cut is 40% (unlike 30% everywhere else). Unfortunately, the better bargain has its drawbacks – namely a smaller selection of shoes and fewer size options than Saks or Bergdorf’s. You will be a very happy shopper if you are a fan of Lanvin, Manolo Blahnik, Casadei, Fendi, Prada, Yves Saint Laurent and Bottega Veneta. We were thrilled to find $389 Manolo Mary Janes alongside, $479 YSL Tribtoo slingbacks and $759 python Lanvin flats. There is also a good selection of boots, with the best bargain being buttery soft Bottega Veneta’s signature woven high boots for $589.

Bergdorf Goodman
For the best selection of sizes and styles, head a few blocks over to Bergdorf Goodman. While their shoe sale area is always chaotic, you will find plenty of glittery Miu Miu pumps and Jimmy Choos to complete your festive seasonal looks. This was the only store where we found discount Brian Atwood Maniac pumps. Fans of Alexander McQueen, Nicholas, Kirkwood, Tods, Dior, and Valentino should head here first. Noticeably absent this year were the walls of boots. There are currently no tall boots on sale despite one sales associate saying they were mixed in the racks.

A second markdown will take place the day after Christmas and should be 60% off.

Insider tip: avoid wearing black shoes since the shoe salon’s new carpeting sheds everywhere.

Saks Fith Avenue
Saks Fifth Avenue is having their 10022 shoe sale starting with a 30% discount. This is hands down the best place to go for “it” shoes by Yves Saint Laurent. You can find their Tribute (pumps and sandals), Tribtoo and Palais pumps in a variety of materials and colors with plenty of different sizes available. If Jimmy Choos are more your thing, then Saks should be at the top of your list. Unlike Bergdorf’s there is a good selection of boots on sale too.

Insider tip: On December 26th, ALL sale merchandise including 10022-SHOE will be an additional 20% to 50% off the sale price. Plan on arriving early and dealing with queues and utter chaos – last year they had to shut the line down around 2pm due to the insanity.

Versace at H&M Returns

The Versace collaboration with H&M was quite successfully by all accounts. On launch day there were lines around the block and every item available was sold. Though you can really see the carnage of a design collaboration from the returns bin.

Over at the 86th Street H&M we were surprised to see there was more than a small bin of returns. As a matter of fact, the returns have their own section within the women's department.

So what items did Versace fanatics decide to do without? To start there are lots of little pink bags and lots and lots of shoes. In the clothing section there are several of pink skirts with tassels, purple dresses and sequined print dresses. We found only one pair of printed leggings in a size two and a single bustier top. The pièce de résistance, however, was a men's overcoat with a leather lapel and leather sleeves. Both the quality and the styling of this item was head over heals better than anything else we saw.

The aforementioned coat is posted on ebay for about $700! From the looks of the ebay sales, we bet a lot more inventory will be coming back to H&M. You bet we'll be keeping our eyes open for markdowns.

Milly Sale

The Madison Avenue Milly boutique has reduced select items from their fall and winter collection. The markdown ranges from 30% to 50% off, depending on the item. While browsing, I found a peacoat with fur trim for $696 from $995, a delicate pink merino cardigan is $206 from $295 and an enamel cuff is $110 from $225.

I must admit though, our trip to Milly was not strictly to spy on sale prices. In fact, I was invited with other bloggers to style my very own holiday Milly look. In keeping true to the Madison Avenue tradition I started with a great purple coat. (Sometimes your coat is all others see of your outfit throughout the winter season.) After, I added a huge jeweled necklace, a great sparkly patterned dress and heels.

Kat, who works on the Milly sales floor, is wearing a very festive sequined skirt with a classic silk print top. Her jewels include a simple long necklace and a big bold cuff. (Truth, I have a cuff addiction.) Doesn’t' she look cute?

So now, I need a bit of your help. This styling thing is a contest and the blogger with the most "Likes" wins a prize. Truth, I'm not worried about the prize but I am fiercely competitive. Now I'm asking readers to go to Facebook and "Like" my styling job. I promise that I will keep my day-job of finding great sales but who doesn't want to win... even if it is a kitschy contest.

Bottega Veneta Private Sale

Sometimes we just don't understand how certain brands handle markdowns. For example, most of the Gucci sales people would still deny there is a sale. Over at Tom Ford, the associates say there is never a sale. The icon of logo-less luxury, Bottaga Veneta doesn't host sales either...

Lets try that again. Bottaga Veneta doesn't host sales on bags except for two hours twice a year. That's right. On Thursday, December 1, Bottaga will be offering their fall and winter collection to customers at discount prices between the hours of 5pm and 7pm.

Okay, the classic bags, like the Cabat, will not be included in that markdown but that doesn't mean that the sale doesn't exist. We expect that bags like the $4850 Nero Patchwork Intrecciato Nappa Lido Bag will be eligible. In addition, there will be shoes and clothing for both men and woman from the fall and winter collections.

In past seasons, the markdown has been 50% off but we haven't been told the discount for this sale. If you're wary about crashing the private sale, we suggest keeping an eye on the Bottega website, as the brand often puts their online store items on sale a few weeks later.

Miracle on Madison

Despite the (often) cool weather, this happens to be our favorite time of year in Manhattan. There is a buzz and energy that rivals any other place -- and it's not just because of the sales. As matter of fact, Miracle on Madison is a prime example of the wonderful activities that make this season shine even brighter.

Miracle on Madison Avenue is a 25-year-old philanthropic holiday shopping tradition. Over 80 luxury and jewelry retailers on Madison Avenue participate by donating 20% of sales that day to the Children’s Aid Society. (Click here to see a full list of participating retailers.)

Prada Sale to Begin

Prada eliminated their presale policy a few seasons ago but that doesn't mean that it's impossible to get top pick ahead of sale season. We've been told that the official sale will begin December 1 but... but... you can let a sales person know if there's something you really want.

The markdown sheets had not been released at the time we received our top-secret information but rumors we suspect that the discount on shoes and clothing will be 40%. We feel confident betting that bi-color Mary-Jane boots will be included in the markdown along with more traditional boots and booties.

We believe that the braded style bags will be part of the discount merchandise but don't count on much else. As a matter of fact, we were told the prices were increased on most of the classic Prada handbag selection. For example, the Saffiano Lux tote was $1560 but is now $1630. That's $130 difference or about 10%, which would have normally covered the tax.

Just one more reason to make friends with those who live in Jersey...

Slim Pickings at Filene’s Basement

Following the news of Filene's Basement going out of business, we anticipated some serious liquidation prices on the designer merchandise. As is the case with many going out of business sales, we found the Filene's merchandise to be sparse and even more expensive than a normal markdown.

The European "Vault" merchandise was an additional 20% off, but there was hardly anything to choose from. At Union square we saw a couple racks of Missoni (mostly horrible corduroy pants), and a few racks of Valentino ready-to-wear separates and dresses. Most of the items were still in the $400 to $500 range so the 20% discount wasn’t all that helpful. (If you look at our past stories, you will see a range of better merchandise that is expensive.)

The most organized and well-stocked section was designer accessories, which can be found in glass cases. A Gucci monogram tote with their signature red and green stripe detailing was still $1389, although the pricing for the belts were much better. Celine and Prada belts were around $200, and there were lots of different styles of Dolce & Gabbana belts for $89. Ferragamo and Pucci scarf fans will fare best, with many silk scarves available between $59 and $119. These accessories were also an additional 20% off.

A trip uptown, to the store's Broadway location, fared no better. There were hardly any designer duds left over except for an unattractive Missoni jacket that was still $600. If you are willing to sift through the racks we would suggest trying the Union Square location. The store's last email blast announced an additional markdown but we would suggest saving your cab fare and allocation the funds towards some more meaningful shopping.

Gucci Presale Begins

If you happen to walk into Gucci and ask about the sale it's likely that a sales person will roll their eyes and deny that any sale exists. Who needs attitude when you have the link to Gucci's online private presale?

The sale officially starts December 2nd but you can start your clicking right here. The discounts on handbags are 30%, men's and women's clothing and shoes are 50% and the kids collection is 30%.

We aren't personally fond of Gucci's handbag collection but we always love Gucci's boots. These gray suede high heeled booties ($439 from $875) and these high boots are $899 from $1795. We are also fond of this belted dress with a ivory and black optical print ($845 from $1695) and a double breasted jacket is $979 from $1950.

Brookstone Comes to 86th Street

It looks as if 86th Street is getting a Brookstone. The boy-toy destination is taking over the old Petco on 86th and Lexington. The store opening is part of the 46-year-old gadget emporium's new expansion and growth plan, which also includes several other new Manhattan locations.

Customers can expect to be wooed by hot products such as the OSIM uAstro Zero-Gravity Massage Chair ($3,495), the Tranquil Moments Advanced white-noise maker ($169) and the Parrot AR.Drone Quadricopter ($299), according to the New York Post.

Normally a Brooksone opening wouldn't signify much but we are seeing the entry as another step towards the mallification of 86th Street. (Not that that's a bad thing.) In the past two years, the popular east side cross street and surrounding areas have seen the opening of Sephora, H&M, L'Occitane, Lululemon, Athleta, Urban Oufitters and Brooks Brother's. This in addition to Barnes and Noble's, Victoria's Secret, Children's Place and Gap, which have been in the neighborhood for some time.

Even the food seems a bit food court-esq with Shake Shake and the anticipated opening of Panera. Now, all we need to do is come up with a catchy name for the area. Any suggestions?

More presales: YSL and Dolce & Gabbana

As we've been making our way through boutiques we've noticed that they are very quite but that should all change come next week. This really is the best time to shop because there is no markdown chaos but still lots of savings. Here are two more presales to help you get a jump on your holiday shopping.

Yves Saint Laurent
The YSL presale begin just yesterday and there are some very interesting items included in the markdown. The discount is 40% off across the board. There are several pair of Tribute sandals that are included in the markdown. We were also shown a few Muse bags in purple, tan and dark brown that are part of the presale. Roady bags in gray, brown and tan are on sale too. Upstairs there is a wide collection of ready-to-wear that's ripe for the picking. If you're on the fence about an item, you can wait until after Christmas. second markdown is usually 50%.

Missoni + Target Leftovers

Just when you thought that the end of Missoni had come at Target, a markdown occurs. Yes, there were lots of returns and they items are quietly being resotcked online and some have even been discounted.

During our last Target shopping trip we found a throw, kid's shoes, rain boots, lots of bedding, throw pillows and decore boxes. If you check online now, you will also find some interesting items including the hard to get Missoni Bicycle (still $400), poufs (now $59 from $99), bed sets 30% off, kid's rain boots, iPad case (still $60) and newborn sweater suit ($25).

Prices vary between the stores themselves and online. We even heard about one store manager telling a customer, "I hate this stuff. I can't stand to even look at it any more. Will you take it if i mark it down to clearance price?." The answer as obviously a difinitive, YES!

Presales Begin: Lanvin and Chloe

Thanksgiving is already next week and that means presale season is about to begin. For the uninitiated, presale is the period right before a store's markdown. Usually, the boutique's best customers get called and invited to shop from the discounted merchandise before the general public is alerted to the markdown.

Don't worry if you're not on a first name basis with Betsy, Everest and Stephanie. We've got you covered. The first presales to hit Madison Ave are Lanvin and Chloe. Here's the information you'll need to know.

Presale started this week and the sale officially begins on Monday. Clothing, shoes and some handbags are now 40% off. Most of the handbags shown on the runway are on sale but the classics are not. We are told that presale shopping is mostly by appointment but we are quite confident that all customers will be given equal discount treatment.

Email My Receipt Please

One of the first lessons of shopping is to always keep your receipt. Even in the instances where you know the items fits, it's a good idea to keep a recorded of your purchase. You never know, the seams can gunravel or the store can markdown the item a day later.

Our problem has always been keeping our receipts in order. Stuffing wads of paper into your bag or delicate wallet is not a great system but one that we continue to partake. You can imagine our enthusiasm when Apple started emailing receipts several years ago. More recently, however, department stores and retail outlets have been implementing similar technology.

A few weeks ago, a Gap associate declared, "We are trying to go paperless. Can we email you the receipt?" Needless to say, we were thrilled to participate. More recently, Barney's implemented quick checkout technology, which allows sales associates to swipe your card on the sales floor in a similar manner as Apple. Give your sales person your email address and voila, your sale transaction is complete and your receipt is neatly folded into your email inbox.

Just this week Saks Fifth Avenue implemented a system that has the ability to email your receipt. (No more stuffing your receipt in your shoe box!) We are also told that Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie and Nordstrom have paperless receipt options.

As a matter of fact, the New York Times reported that Nordstrom is looking into ways to to make its e-receipts more appealing, perhaps by adding a picture of the item to the receipt so a shopper could post it to a Facebook wall. That's what we call social shopping.

By next holiday season, wouldn't be surprised if e-receipts are the norm rather than the exception. So next time you're shopping, ask to have your receipt emailed. Your wallet will thank you!

Christian Louboutin Sale in Full Swing

This weekend, a sign outside the Christian Louboutin showroom stated, “Dear Customers, there is no Christian Louboutin sale happening at this time.” But we knew better!

An informant tells us that throughout Monday and over the weekend, A-list celebrities and VIPs have been scooping up discount Louboutins. We are told that some of the bold name shoppers included cast members of Glee and Blake Lively, who again grabbed dozens of pairs for herself and friends. Our source did say there are still plenty of shoes left for the rest of you lucky enough to get an invite. (We were dropped from the invite list several seasons ago for our sale coverage.)

There are some basics you should know if you have an invite or are thinking of joining an invitee as a plus one. The biggest selections of shoes are tiny, size 35s and 36s. By the time mortals get into the --and that includes the editors of glossies-- most of the 37s to 38.5s are sold out.

You also should be warned that the shoes are discounted but still not free. Don’t expect to pick up any great heels for under $200 as some sites are reporting. They do have some sandals and espadrille wedges for $150 but they aren’t usually very desirable. Lower heels in exotic colors are priced at least $225 and many of the sky-high modern platform pumps and slingbacks are $325 and up. Last spring there was a limited selection of boots around $550, and we did spot a fair amount of bridal shoes.

We expect the lines to be several hours long tomorrow. We suggest heading over in the afternoon if you do have an invite and want to avoid a several hour wait. Good luck ladies and don’t forget to share your Christian Louboutin sample sale stores with us.

As the days are getting shorter and the weather is cooler, it's just natural to feel the need to snuggle with cashmere. We couldn't think of a better way to stock up on cold-weather warmth than at the White + Warren sample sale.

The sale will run just Tueday and Wednesday and feature cashmere basics for both men and women – likely the cashmere cable crew. We are told tha tbaics will start at $85 and wraps will start at $75. It's that time of year again and the information has already leaked. The Christian Louboutin sample sale is upon us. Blogger Mizhattan says the sale starts Tuesday but we are told that invites for Friday have already been distributed.

Past experience has taught us that the sale runs more than a week but the first few days are strictly limited to VIPs and celebs. (Blake Lively inists on getting first pick.) Editors, wholesale clients and friends and family are usually given shopping slots towards the end of the week. (This is your best opportunity to use your hustle if you don't have an invite.)

AEFFE’s Civilized Sample Sale

When so many random sales and promotions call themselves a sample sale, it is a pleasure to actually attend a sale that lives up to the title. The Aeffe sale contains actual samples ranging from sizes 40 to 44, or mediums. We spotted many size 6 separates, although some designer’s samples tend to run small. Just beware, some pieces may not be fully finished and we noticed many dresses without or finished hems.

Moschino lovers will be thrilled to find racks filled with the original Italian label in addition to their Cheap and Chic and Love Moschino lines. The original Moschino items are still priced high with, with most items above $500, even for a plain white button up blouse. They did have some hip leather jackets but they were still $1400 to $2300. The Cheap and Chic racks were slightly more reasonable, with loads of separates around $200 and blazers and outerwear priced $500 to $800.

We suggest that shoppers check out the Cacharel racks on the back wall since their prices were some of the best. Separates were largely $100 to $200 while dresses ranged up to about $300. We found a gorgeous gray wool peacoat for only $400.

The Alberta Ferretti and Philosphy di Alberta Ferretti lines were slightly more expensive, but with luxurious fabrics like alpaca, silks, and woven knits it is worth it. Most separates and dresses were in the $300 to $400 range while a gorgeous burgundy fur lined suede jacket was a price topper at $2005.

Jean Paul Gaultier dominated the right side of the room with lots of woven knits which were unfortunately more dated than chic. You will also find racks of mixed designer cocktail and formal dresses, including long evening gowns ranging from $250 to $1000.

The shoes are plentiful, but only for lucky ladies with sample size 37 feet. There are a few pairs in other sizes, but with prices from $150 to $250 for flats and pumps and $300 to $500 for boots it is not worth the hassle.

While the prices are steep for sample pieces, many items are very well-made and fashion forward takes on classic silhouettes. The ladylike atmosphere also makes this a more pleasant shopping experience. We expect that prices on Saturday will be cut 20% to 30%. We would suggest waiting until then to do the majority of your shopping.

Bloomingdales Friends and Family

Last week, Bloomies started an extensive first markdown, which was about 40% off. Once you tally the friends and family discount you can save a grand total of about 50%.

Chanel Pricing: Up, Down or Unchanged

We have heard several rumors and fielded many email about a November Chanel price hike. We called around to the department stores and got the usual mixed messages. (Pushy sales people always like pushing a sale based on a foreboding price hike.)

This time we reached out to the big guns for official comment because even a 10% price hike can be several hundred dollars. So the official word is ...drum roll please...

"Chanel has no plans to increase prices for the time being, even if we regularly adjust our prices in line with changes in styles, production costs, materials and volatile exchange rates, similarly to other top luxury brands."

After breathing a sigh of relief we have to float a question to our readers: What do you think is meant by adjusting prices similarly to other top luxury brands? We have our theories but would love to hear what you have to say.

Housing Works Fashion for Action

The IT-it: Deborah Lippman Sparkle

If we had to pick one stand out trend for this season it would have to be sparkle. It's impossible to avoid but so much fun to love. There are an abundance of sparkles to choose: shoes, dresses, tops, jackets and our favorite-- sparkle polish.

Picking the way that you're going to shine is a personal option but the sparkle in Deborah Lippman's Happy Birthday polish makes us giddy.

We paired our Happy Birthday sparkle over a hot pink cream polish and it was a show stopper. One friend remarked, "What's going on on your nails?" No response was necessary after closer observation. It was obvious that it was a party.

If Happy Birthday is too wild of a party we would suggest Lady Sings the Blues, which is blue polish with blue glitter or Bad Romance, which is purple with purple glitter. Both are a little less flashy.

Two manicure suggestions, if you will: A good base coat makes you manicure last significantly longer . and quick dry is a must. We swear by Debroah Lippman's because we haven't had a smudged nail since we started using it months ago.

It's not often that you come across shoppers waiting on line on Madison Avenue. Somehow the French pastry shop, Laduree has customers lining up as if they were waiting for the newest Apple iPhone release.

If you're looking for a quick sweet and an even sweeter deal, we might suggest stopping into the French jeweler, Mauboussin. The store is offering Laduree macarons and 10% off everything every Saturday from 4pm to 7pm. Yes, it's a jewelry store and it's French but the prices are not too intimidating. For instance, this amethyst and diamond ring is $1100 and these diamond stud earrings are $1675. Both less than certain brands and styles of boots.

Kid's European Sample Sale

Long time readers of Madison Avenue Spy may remember the wonderful sample sales for children that used to take place in the garment district. Since the recession many of those showrooms have closed or changed their warehousing structures, which means the days of buying fancy european chidren's clothing below wholesale are gone.

Well, maybe not completely. C&C Childrenswear, which carries popular brands like ADD Down, Custo Barcelona, Imps & Elfs, Lofff, Val & Max and Weekend a la Mer, is hosting a sale where prices will be under wholesale. The sale will begin Monday and run all week.

We stopped by before the weekend to catch a preview of what's in store and found quite a few nice items. Most if the inventory is samples from spring 2012 but we able to find a few things that can be used now. A Val & Max dress that retails for over $300 was marked $40, an ADD Down jacket retails for $288 was $125, pajamas that normally cost $90 were $27 and a baby Imps & Elfs baby set was $35 from a retail price of about $80.

The stock isn't as abundant as past sales at other showrooms but there are still wonderful items to be found at great prices. There won't be any restocking, so we suggest you attend the sale earlier in the week. (Like now, if you plan to go.) Also, the colors assortment is limited on the ADD jackets. Don't count on getting the popular shiny blacks and blues but be happy to settle on the plums and light lavenders.

The height of shopping season is just ahead of us and shoppers need to remember that all sales are not created equally. Specifically, those flash sales might not be offering as hot of a bargain as you think.

New York Times Style reporter, Stephanie Rosenbloom reports that shoppers can regularity find even better deals with just a bit more online searching. On Guilt.com, "for instance, a Kate Spade cabana-stripe medium tote bag was recently $169, plus $5.95 shipping. That same day, the bag was on KateSpade.com for $130 with free shipping — about $45 cheaper," she writes.

So what about all this flash that can cost you extra cash?

Those who keep an eye on sales say there are more businesses proffering discount clothing than ever before, which means that no one channel is always tops for bargains. “It’s really hard to get good closeouts nowadays because so many places are fighting for them,” said Lila Delilah, who writes the designer sales tracking blog Madison Avenue Spy. “Now the Web sites are fighting the discounters, who are fighting the flash sale sites.”

Ms. Delilah said she tends to find the best deals in brick-and-mortar stores. “I always feel that there’s nothing as good as an old-fashioned boutique or department store end-of-season sale,” she said, explaining that returns are easy and that a good salesperson will call a customer when a coveted item is discounted. This is why Ms. Delilah posts salesclerk contact information on her blog. “Those relationships really count for something,” she said.

Steuben Liquidation Sale

In September, Steuben officials announced that the 108-year-old glass maker was shutting down its factory in Corning, N.Y., and its flagship store on Madison Avenue. This was sad news as Steuben is a brand that always represented great American craftsmanship without a lot of hype. It is clearly the end of an era.

Sadly, the glass must go. As part of the brand closing, their famous glassware inventory is being liquidated. The sale is taking place online and at the Madison Avenue boutique. Most items including barware, vases and bowls are priced at about 30% off retail. Nimbus wine glasses are $45 from $75, a crystal rhino is $1462 from $1950 and a flower vase is $609 from $950.

The Madison Avenue boutique plans to stay open through November or until it runs out of merchandise. We imagine that prices will be reduced as the closing date approaches.

The IT-it: Celine Luggage Tote

It seems that there is a new hot bag almost every season. This year, the Celine Luggage tote is hotter than coal on a BBQ. The bag has eye catching curves and is a must-have item on almost every girl's fashion list. There is one problem: It's perpetually out of stock and the waiting lists are miles long.

Of course, we have the inside scoop. Celine just sent a huge shipment of bags to all their retailers. The new shipment consists of the cruise 2012 collection and the popular color combinations from the winter collection are long gone. YSL Sample Sale

Ever since Yves Saint Laurent closed their outlet in Secaucus, the annual sample sale has been a big hit for finding deals. Before heading over there, we want to warn our readers about the over-aggressive shoppers, merchandise hording and a random "hair-pulling" incident that occurred last season.

We suggest that the faint at heart go to Woodbury Common as an alternative or wait for the YSL boutique's second markdown, early next year. Shoppers that are ready to brave the crowds can expect a long wait on the first day. We also caution that you shouldn't set your expectations too high. Don't count on finding popular style bags or shoes like the Muse or Tribute shoes.

So what can you expect? Bag and shoe prices are usually about 60% off retail and the color assortment normally ranges from chartreuse green to plumb purple. Basic black is a hard order here. We suggest setting your eyes on the clothing racks and accessory tables, which are a much better deal. Last season, dresses were priced at $350, sweaters $250 and jackets $400, Real deal seekers should keep an eye out for the YSL jewelry. Last season rings were $50, bracelets $150 and big cuffs were $200.

Mad-Spy Cashmere Shopping Guide

With winter weather nipping at our heels, it is the perfect time to stock up on cold weather staples like a cashmere sweater. Unfortunately, not all cashmere is created equal. With the wide variety of styles, colors, and prices ranges it can be confusing to find the perfect sweater. There tends to be two schools of thought when it comes to buying a cashmere sweater: investment pieces in perennial colors and styles or more seasonal sweaters that don’t break the bank.

When looking for your perfect sweater, be sure to look for 100% cashmere since many sweaters are blended with wool. If you are looking for a lightweight layering piece, silk and cashmere blends retain their softness without adding bulk. The best cashmere yarns come from Italy or Scotland, and are usually two-ply since single-ply sweaters tend to pill easier. If you can see your hand through a layer of cashmere, it is most likely one-ply.

Either way you decide to invest, be sure to care properly for your cashmere by gentle cleaning and moth-proof storage. Dry cleaning or hand washing in tepid water with Laundress Cashmere Shampoo and laying flat on a towel to dry, is usually suggested. Cashmere sales associates suggest washing your low cost cashmere with baby shampoo. Aveeno baby wash is a favorite.

If you're looking to invest in cashmere that will last a life time there is no better place to start than Madison Avenue. Loro Piana sweater, which retails anywhere from $1000 to $2000, is a favorite of many high-end consumers. To get the best price it's best to wait for Soiffer Haskin's sample sale where discounts run to about 50% off.

If you need your luxury cashmere now, we suggest heading to Malo (Joanna: 212-396-4721), which specializes in Italian cashmere clothing. With a variety of styles, blends, and colors you will certainly find the perfect investment sweater. Basic V-necks in various ply range from $580 to $490 and cardigans are mostly in the $600 range. . If you are looking for a good holiday gift, Malo does mark down their cashmere sweaters 30% to 40% in December.

It’s of some shoppers opinions that Brunello Cucinelli (Phillipe 212-813-0900) is the gold standard in cashmere and with prices ranging from $1500 to $3000 the statement may be literal. There is no sale currently but once December rolls around the discount can go up to 50% off.

A bit further uptown, specialist Manrico (Brigitte: 212-794-4200) has a great selection of lightweight cashmere sweaters for men and women. They are currently having a 30% markdown on their lightweight summer styles and colors. While the sale selection is not great, they will make for good layering pieces for fall and winter. Prices usually range from $540 to $700, so even with the discount you may still pay a hefty price.

For the best selection of colors and styles on Madison at non-investment prices that won’t cause heart palpitations, head over to the J. Crew Collection (Andrea: 212-824-2475). An entire wall is replete with various styles of V-necks, crewnecks, and cardigans in a dozen color choices. Despite ranging in price from $158 to $168, the cashmere is thick and baby soft without any bulk. The only downside was the perfect camel color from a couple seasons ago won’t be back until (supposedly) next season.

Venturing off Madison, the department store cashmere collections are also a good bet for quality sweaters at a fraction of designer prices. For the best deals, head to Bloomingdales where their entire collection is marked an additional 25% off retail. Crewneck shells start at $108, boyfriend V-neck cardigans are $165, and turtlenecks are $145. Interestingly, we didn’t spot at any regular V-neck options. However, there were plenty of plain crewnecks and V-necks available at Saks Fifth Avenue, albeit slightly more expensive at $208. Cashmere cardigans in a variety of fall and winter colors will set you back $248.

For even more budget cashmere buys, definitely check out the new Uniqlo flagship on Fifth Avenue. They have marked their $89.90 cashmere sweaters down to $49.90 until the end of the month. Hands-down, this is the best color selection anywhere in the city, with a rainbow of color options available. The only downside is the quality of the mass-produced cashmere is subpar, with the softness of a wool blend despite being 100% cashmere. For that pricing you can find softer quality cashmere in a multitude of colors and styles at Daffy’s for $39.99 to $139.99.

You can't really go wrong decideing on any of these cashmeres, especially if you find the expensive brands on sale. But, that's what we're here for. Right?

DecadesTwo, the LA-based consignment store, is rolling into New York again for their bi-annual pop-up shop. This time, however, they are splitting their personalities and sending their downtown looks to Soho house and their uptown riches to Lisa Perry's Madison Avenue boutique.

The "Uptown/Downtown" shopping event will take place from October 20 to 22. What's even better? Madison Avenue Spy readers can get a 20% discount when shopping at either location on Friday and Saturday.

As for us? We just couldn't wait. We're glad we didn't because there are some dream items waiting to find the perfect new home. Clearly, the Uptown Decades location was curated with the neighborhood gal in mind, which means there is a lot of Chanel, Oscar, Carolina, Louboutin and Manolo. (Downtown is heavily stocked with McQueen, Philip Lim and Gucci.)

On the Chanel rack, which is quite extensive, we found a variety of light color tweed jackets, suit sets and coats. A long pearl colored trench style is $2900 and a limited edition nautical themed jacket worn in a Miley Cyrus video is $2,100. There are even options for Chanel shoppers who want to spend less than a grand. A soft blue linen dress with double-C buttons is $500 and a short red jacket is $895.

Among other designers, we found a long Bottaga dress for $1,200, an iconic YSL cocktail dress for $600, a Bill Blass sequin dress for $660 and an adorable Balenciaga skirt with original tags showing a $1900 retail price for $340. A dress by London-based designer Maria Grachvogel was crying to be taken home and was priced at just $350.

Shoppers keen on shoes, bags and accessories will not be discappointed either. We found Louboutin spikey high boots for about $1000, Alaia black and white pony hair pumps for $400, never worn Chanel ballet flats for $330, a white multi-color Vuitton note book for $220, black croc Manolo pumps for $350 and Kirckwood lizard pumps for $220.

C. Wonder Amazes

Although the new Soho concept store, C. Wonder doesn't open until October 22nd, we got a preview of their flagship store this evening. C. Wonder, named for it's founder Chris Burch, may not be the cure for cancer or help fortify world peace but the price point and product assortment will make customers' mouths water.

Much of the basic concept design is obviously inspired by the principal behind the Tory Burch brand, which is a modern twist to prep. In place of the Tory Burch cross logo there are lots of C's branded on a variety of products ranging from housewares, home decor, personal electronics, apparel, shoes, jewelry and accessories. Even the shopping bags have a Tory feel.

Lets first start by saying that most items in the store come in a verity of five colors-- pink, green, yellow, navy and orange. So most rain boots ($78), mugs ($8), monogramed shirts ($68), wheelie suitcases ($99) and bike helmets can all be mixed and matched to fall along the brand's color palate. It's hard not to imagine that Chris Burch went shopping in China and ordered one of each in five colors.

As you can imagine the cloths are styled with an eye towards bright Greenwich prep. Think of hot pink puffer vests styled with stripped button down shirts, navy blazers with nautical sweaters stripped sweaters and a bright green barn jacket ($178) paired with a basic black sweater.

Although the fashion is nice it's far from the highlight. It's the housewares that really make C. Wonder stand apart from other retail stores. The mix and match style of dishes, napkins, table accessories and hostess gifts fill a much needed market at the fast fashion price point. The styling is modern and playful similar to the styling’s of Jonathon Adler. Dinner plates are $12 each, salad plates are $10 and cereal bowls $8. Theoretically, you can walk away with a full table setting for $12 people for under $500.
