McQueen Reduced at Target

Target made a big mistake with their McQueen line-- they priced it too high. What made the GO International collection great is that it was really very affordable and a great value. If you are looking to spend $90 on a dress, however, there are numerous places to shop and Target isn't the first place that comes to mind.

Well, enough time has passed to call for a first markdown. The collection is now reduced 30% off, which makes shopping for McQueen at Target a lot more digestible. Dresses are now $55, tops are under $20 and bikini's are $14 for each piece. See folks, these are Target prices!

Ralph Lauren Half-Off

Couture Snob reported today that Ralph Lauren's spring sale has already started. The discount is 40% off plus an additional 15%, which brings the total saving to exactly 49% off.

The sale online is not as good. A big pony skinny polo was $198 and is now $139, or about 30% off. Stick to the Ralph Lauren stores if you're looking for a polo deal.

Sales Forecasting Spring 2009, Part 2

Yesterday we asked a few of our blogging peers to forecast how the spring 2009 sales season is going to break. Looking back into our archives, we thought we would list last year's action.
Carolina Herrera: May 17, 50% off
Christian Louboutin: June 1, 40% off
Chloe, June 2, 50% off
Dior: Presale May 13, official sale May 17, 40% off
Gucci: Presale May 20, official sale June 3rd, 30% off, Presale May 28, official sale June 2, 30%
Jil Sander: May 27, 40% off
Jimmy Choo: Presale May 27, official sale June 1, 30% off
Luca Luca, May 22, 20-50% off
Prada: Presale May 18, official sale June 1, 50% off
Michael Kors: May 20, 50% off
Missoni: May 19, 30% off
Nordstrom: May 15, 40% off
Sigerson Morrison: May 26, 30% off

Last year, by mid-May, the department stores were all discounting pretty nicely. Here's the breakdown:
Bloomingdales: May 22, 40% off with coupons for an extra 20%.
Bergdorf: F5 was 30% off and the rest of the store went down to 30% on May 29
Barneys: May 22, 40% off
Neiman Marcus: May 6th, 30% off
Saks: May 26, 30% off

Lila's Take: I expect the sales to start the second week of May, which is a bit earlier than last year. I think many stores will go straight to 40% but others will try 30% and push to 40% and 50% if merchandise isn't moving.

We are also hearing that presales are going to run a bit differently this season. in many boutiques, customers are going to be invited to take their merchandise home during the presale period. Usually presale items cannot be picked up or sent until the sale offically begins.

My crystal ball says that Saks will go straight to 40% but not blow merchandise out at 70% unless the store remains dead.

Keep a watchful eye on Barneys. They are experiencing a bit of a cash crunch and may discount fast and furious to pay for the fall collection.

In the end, the luxury brands get ticked off if their merchandise gets reduced too much too quickly, but maybe they should remember that without these stores there's no outlet for their brands.

What do you think?

Sales Forecasting Spring 2009, Part 1

Madison Avenue stores are pumping the air-conditioning but the heat is still on to move merchandise. So how are sales going to fall out this season? Will stores go straight to 75% off or have luxury vendors flexed their muscles enough to keep prices in check?

Sure, we have our own opinions but first we thought we would extend the question to our peers. Here's what they had so say:

Lauren Dimet Waters
Second City Style
I think we are going to see some amazing sales again this spring. Will it be like Christmas? No. But it will be close. Many stores are already offering 40% off spring merch which usually goes on sale Memorial Day ... a clear sign stores are hurting. I think by Memorial Day we will see giant clearances.

While I think many stores (especially department stores) did a better job of controlling merchandise, I still think they are going to find themselves with a lot of inventory. Who are really going to be hurt? The high-end luxury retailers, the free standing stores like YSL and Micheal Kors.

Women are still going to want some new stuff, but they are going to wait for killer prices before they shop.

Tina Craig
Bag Snob
Sales are definitely earlier this year. In fact, this weekend I was asked to a private pre-shop event for spring 55% off at Neiman Marcus.

Cheryl Maday
Cheryl Shops
I don't think the sales will be as quick and as steeply discounted as fall, since the retailers have had a few months to tailor their buys and their stock levels to the current economic climate--the retailers are much better prepared this season.

That said, no one is shopping at the moment, except during Friends & Family and other such events that the stores have been using to test the waters. (And I don't blame them--once you've shopped at 80% off, it's hard to go back to full price.) I have a feeling we'll be seeing events like this for another few weeks, and once Mother's Day comes and goes, the stores will go to 40% off. It's just a matter of who marks down first; since they have nothing to lose (i.e. their vendors are already ticked off because of last fall). My money is on Saks.

Barneys 40% Off Men's Sale

A tipster informed Racked readers that Barneys is planning a one day Men's sale where muchandise will be dicounted 40%. The sale is set for May 4th but I suggest you go now and try to pre-sell before the Monday madness begins.

Monday, April 27, 2009

Bloomingdales Private Shoe Sale

Bloomies is hosting a private shoe sale from Thursday, April 30 to Monday, May 4. The discount will range from 30% to 40% off original prices on a "selection" of Women's shoes.

In addition, you can take an extra 20% off when you purchase of two or more pairs of shoes. Internet shoppers can use the online code: WOMENSHOE. The sale opens to the public on May 5.

Europen Children's Sample Sale

Magia, a showroom that sells high-end European children's clothing bands --like Il Gufo, Armani Junior, Simonetta and Cavalli-- is hosting its semi-annual sample sale.

The sale runs from Monday, April 27th to Friday, May 1st and will contain merchandise from the current summer 2009 collection and the upcoming winter 2009 collection. Sizes range from infant to 16 years. Prices usually start at 20% off wholesale but go down to 50% off wholesale on the last day.

If you can't make it to the showroom this week Magia usually opens to the public again next month when other children's showrooms host their sales. Go now for the best picks. Wait for later for the best prices. Details below:

Magia Sample Sale
Monday, April 27th to Friday, May 1st
131 West 33rd Street, suite 810
9:30am to 4:30pm

Clarification: No European children will be sold at the sale.

Maurice Villency Closing

Maurice Villency is closing their Manhattan showroom and hosting a sale with up to 70% off. We are going to write this store closing off as another sign that pretension without substance is simply out of style in the new economy.

Maurice Villency specialized --or prayed --on those without style. Customers payed through the nose for mediocre quality furnishings and then later had to wait as if the company were building a custom made Temple of Versailles. No thank you.

We say good-bye and good riddance. Maybe their stores are doing better in states where people don't know better, like-- Wisconsin.

eLuxury Super 80% Off Sale

eLuxury just launched a super discount where all sale items are an additional 40% off. We found a $1700 Roberto Cavalli dress reduced to just $300. Do that math-- that's more than 80% off! A Proenza Schouler georgette rust-print top was $725 and now $110. A $2300 Versace dress is $400. You get the picture.

Granted, some of this inventory is left over from fall, but think about it...fall is less than six months away!

Burberry Private Sale

Burberry is hosting a private sale that starts April 30th and runs until May 3rd. Select merchandise will be discounted 30% to 40% off. Presale starts now but be sure to stay away from those barn jackets-- please!

D&G's Dahlia Sold Out

Don't tell me you're really surprised?

The deep red shade lipstick premiered on Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall/Winter 2010 runway and now Dahlia has garnered a wait list a mile long. Get this, the lipstick doesn't even hit the shelves of Saks until tomorrow.

The Dolce & Gabbana make-up line launches exclusively in the United States at Saks Fifth Avenue-- in New York City-- and will reach Saks Fifth Avenue Beverly Hills and by mid-May. However, if you want Dahlia you might have to wait longer.

If only, Stefano and Domenico could get the spelling of my name right. It's D-E-L-I-L-A-H!

Matthew Williamson for H&M

The first time I ever heard of Matthew Williamson I was at a lounge in St. Barths and was finding myself bored with the scene and underwhelmed by the fashion. Everything was just so much the same until a striking woman walked in with the most dazzling kaftan. I stared all evening until I found an opening to make a fashion enquiry. At that moment I was introduced to Matthew Williamson.

It didn't, however, do me much good. His designs were not to be found in the U.S. I called everywhere looking for a dress like the one I saw until I gave up and made the purchase in London.

Now -- like most of fashion--Matthew Williamson's designs can be found everywhere. There's Net-a-Porter for online shoppers, Scoop for neighborhood dwellers and his very own downtown boutique for those who yearn to be close to the source. And now starting tomorrow Matthew Williamson can be found at your local H&M.

Looking for the aforementioned kaftan look? It's there. The price, however, isn't as thrilling as one might have hoped. Is the above H&M dress really worth almost $350? Let us know what you think. 70% Off

The virtual DVF store has a 70% off section that contains an assortmant that is perfect for this in between time of year.

The only snag is that many of the best looks are already out of stock. Go for the bright colors and you might be a bit more lucky if you're a tiny size 2 or a curvy size 12. Even if you're neither take the time to look around because we found the above classic wrap dress in a size 8.

Cadeau Maternity Closing

I know this is a bit niche but feeling fabulous when you're pregnant isn't always easy. For this reason it is forever important that you look as wonderful as you can. This task would have been so much harder without Cadeau's maternity clothing. All of us lived in our High Tech Pants, which were ironically made out of the same fabric and manufactured at the same factory as Prada's high-tech fabric pants.

Well ladies, it was first Liz Lange and now we are saying good-bye to Cadeau. The Elizabeth street store is closing and everything is discounted up to 90% off. The store fixtures are even listed to go. So if you're ever going to listen to my advice this would be the time. Call your expecting friends or get your pregnant butt down to Nolita today because today is the last day of Cadeau forever.

Department Stores Run Competing Sales

This weekend is turning out to be a competitive time for department store sales. We want to make sure you spend your money wisely and allocate appropriately. Isn't that what the folks on CNBC are talking about when they speak of diversified portfolios?

Here are this weekend's highlights along with some upcoming sales. Notice that Bergorf's beauty event is coming up and equates to 25% off of $100 while Saks friends and family is 15% off cosmetics. Read, shop, save and enjoy:

Saks Friends and Family runs until Sunday, April 19th. The general discount is 25% off, an unprecedented 20% off for jewelry, and 15% off for cosmetics.

Until April 19th Bloomindales is offering an extra 40% off for a total savings of 50% to 75% off.

Bloomingdales friends and family event runs from April 23rd to April 26th. The discount throughout much of the store will be 20%. Chanel not included.

Barneys is running a gift card event until April 19th where you get a $25 gift card each time you spend $250.

Bergdorf Goodman
From April 23 to April 25 Bergdorf is running a beauty event where they are offering $25 off when you buy $100 of cosmetics.

Diesel 30% Off

Sometimes we find the best sale information on Facebook. This time Diesel is running a 30% off sale from Friday, April 17 until Sunday, April 19. Almost everything included.

Bloomingdales 50% to 75% Off

The following is from a Bloomingdales postcard:

First Offer
Thursday to Sunday, April 16 to 19
Take an Extra
40% Off*
almost all permanently reduced items for her and him for a total savings of 50% to 75% off original prices.

Plus, take 25% -40% off* a selection of regular-priced fashions for her and him.

*Lots of small print. Here are the highlights: Certain designer and brand exclusions apply. Excludes Women's Designer Collections and Men's Tailored Clothing. I'm going to take a wild guess that Chanel is one of those "certain designer and brand exclusions."

Outnet Live

Net-A-Porter's discount site, is live!

The prices are good: 50% to 70% off. However, just like Nordstrom's The Rack and Neiman Marcus's Last Call, we are going to hold out for deeper discounts. In the meantime, keep your eye on the Flash Sales section where items are discounted deeper just for a limited time.

Lululemon Launches Online

We've always been baffled about how such high concept and modern company like Lululemon wouldn't be online. Well now they are. The site is perfect except that there's not a sale section, yet!

Barneys Spend and Get

These gift card promotions are starting to feel a lot like a Macy's one day sale. Their popularity, however, indicates that they drive sales.

This time the gift card is coming from Barneys where for every $250 you spend, you receive a $25 gift card. Spend $250 get $25. Spend $500, get $50. Spend $750, get $75. You get the picture. The promotion runs from April 16th to April 19th.

This seems to be a big week for department store promotions and unless you're shopping Lanvin go for the Saks friends and family 25% off discount.

Bloomingdales Cocktails and Discounts for Men

We found this men's promotion on one of our favorite sites: Party Crasher!

On Wednesday, April 15th from 6pm to 10pm men --and women--can enjoy cocktails and discounts tomorrow in the men's department of both Manhattan Bloomingdales locations. The more you spend the better the discount:

Spend $200 to $499.99 and save 20%
Spend $500 to $749.99 and save 25%
Spend more than $750 and save 30%

Chanel Pulls Out of Bloomies Friends and Family

Bloomingdales is hosting a friends and family event from April 23rd to April 26th. The discount throughout much of the store will be 20%. Presale is already in progress.

Usually Chanel participates in friends and family with a gift card incentive. For example, spending $500 earns you a $100 gift card and spending $1000 earns you a $200 etc. We hear that preselling for Chanel was crazy and 90% of the stock room is filled from floor to ceiling.

However, Chanel customers-to-be were blindsided when they received the following information from their sales manager:

Good afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend.

I am very saddened to have to write to all of you, to notify you that Chanel has decided to withdraw from the friends & family event here @ Bloomingdales. The EGC offer no longer stands valid. We have tried to arrange compensation for those of you that were already promised an EGC, but sadly there is nothing they will allow us to offer to you.

For those of you that have already placed orders/requests, please note: they will be voided, unless you call or reply to keep them active

Again, i am so very sorry for the misleading information. We were told early on that the offering would be the same as years past, but upon revision, Chanel decided that this promotion was not appropriate for their brand.

I thank you all (as always) for your business.
If I may answer any questions, please feel free to reply, or to call our handbag boutique.

Krizia Relocated

Earlier this month we wrote about Krizia closing their doors after 15 years. We are happy to report that the Italian design house did not abandon Madison Avenue but rather moved two blocks uptown to a smaller location.

The smaller revival is just two blocks up on 68th street. The spot housed Moschino in the 90s and most recently Searle. Sources say that prime space, like this, can be had for about $400 sq. ft. Last year, the asking price was about $1000 sq. ft.

The slimmed down version of Krizia doesn't seem as ritzy but in this economy it may be a smart move. After all, we can't remember the last time we saw anyone else in the store.

Saks Friends and Family

Saks Friends and Family is scheduled to run from Thursday, April 16th until Sunday, April 19th. The discount is 25% off, an unprecedented 20% off for jewelry, 15% off for cosmetics. Presale starts Monday, April 13th.

In addition to the F&F discount Saks card holders will receive triple points when using their Saks card. As a further incentive, the store is offering a 12 month interest free MPA --major purchase account -- for purchases over $2000.

Some brands like Chanel, Louboutin, Prada, David Yurman, H. Stern, Cartier and Bulgari are not included in the 20% off discount but shoppers can still receive triple points and are eligible for MPAs regardless of brand.

Missoni Discounted

We don't get across the park often but one reason to take the bus across 79th Street is Filene's Basement. The merchandise isn't as interesting or diverse as Century 21 but you don't have to deal with crowds or tourists either.

This week friends told us that Filene's received a major shipment of Missoni summer clothing that should not be missed. Swimsuits, which run about $320 at the Madison Avenue boutique, range from $99 to $130 at the Basement. Beach towels-- a great hostess gift-- are $30. There are also lots of traditional Missoni patterned and knit dresses.

Yes, the prices are good but after a while one wonders how much Missoni can a person wear without feeling like they are wearing the same thing over and over. So scout it out and just pick your favorites because like everything moderation is key.

Chloe Paraty Better with the Euro

We are big fans of Bag Snob or anything snobby for that matter. While checking out what's new and hot we came across a post about the Chloe Paraty bag going 30% off. Normally a 30% off bag sale would not be worth mentioning except that the Paraty bag doesn't seem to go on sale.

Whenever Chloe has their in store sale the Paraty is excluded. They don't go on sale at Saks or Bergdorfs either. So 30%--if you like the bag-- is a reasonable deal.

However, the Bag Snobs missed a major point., which is hosting the sale, is a European company and all prices are quoted in euros. The green Paraty started off at €1125 and is €788 with the 30%. Convert that to dollars and the final cost is $1060. That's 45% off the original price of $1900-ish.

So hurray to Bag Snob for sniffing out a great deal but never forget about working in the currency exchange-- for better or worse!

Now, what's your opinion of the Sally?

Arrivederci Krizia

April started without a joke or even the air of irony. Krizia is gone. The store, located at Madison and 66th , for about 15 years is now no longer there. Another casualty of the financial crisis? Indeed.

Krizia was always one of the consolations of age. The style is unexpected and ironic but maybe two decades too old for us. In time we always thought it would be a great spot to mature.

We will miss running down the store's marble steps and falling upon an exquisitely crafted clothing for 70% off. Its presence will be missed.

Ageless Beauty

We've never purchased a George Foreman Grill, a Clapper or Spray on Hair. Hell, we're not even fond of Internet shopping. That's why we were so dubious about meeting dermatologist Adrienne Denese, who is launching several of her SkinScience products on QVC on Friday night at midnight.

First, lets talk about Dr. Denese. She is Hungarian born and received her medical training from Cornell and a Ph. D. from Harvard. She is all about the science of looking great and ageless. Of course our first question was, can you ever be too young for Botox? Her answer, a concrete, "yes." Apparently, some longtime Botox users have noticed loss of effectiveness. The horror!

Dr. Denese is clearly an established expert. She has a treasure of information to share and has some pretty interesting products too. One product is Glow Younger Self Tanner. Like most of you, we're not fans anything fake. The cool thing about this tanner is that it's a clear gel that has absolutely no smell. Not even the wrench of a fragrance free product.

Speaking of the sun, "Absolutely don't," insists Dr. Denese. If you're looking for the sun's natural vitamin D-- which you should--head to your local GNC rather than the beach. Dr. Denese suggests 1000 or 2000 micrograms daily as a cancer preventative. Dr. Denese's SPF 30 Defense Day Cream wards off both UVA and UVB rays, in addition to providing moisturizer, antioxidants and zinc-oxide. The really unique feature of this product is that it is tinted with melanin, so it enhances your unique skin tone without looking "off color."

Bottom line, Dr. Denese is a skin science guru and coupled with the hypnotic effect of QVC is sure to be entertaining and informative.
