Dolce & Gabbana Friends and Family

We just received intelligence that Dolce & Gabbana will be hosting a private friends and family sale, which will drop the discount on most summer merchandise to 60% off. The sale will start Thursday and run through the weekend.

The current Dolce discount is 40% off but many department stores marked down similar merchandise to 60% last week. Essentially, this friends and family sale is a private second seasonal markdown.

Our best Dolce friends and family purchases was a classic leopard print tote bag. It works wonderfully as a beach bag. It's light and versatile and classic enough to use for many summer seasons.

Century 21 Sale Time

By ManhattanMataHari
Discount shoppers will thrilled to learn that Century 21 is now having their summer clearance event. While promotions boast savings up to 75% off their normal prices, we found most designer clothing to be discounted 25% to 50% off Century's normal discount.

We headed Downtown to the discounter's "flagship" store and were rather pleased with the assortment of sale inventory and prices. Merchandise from Italian design houses were most plentiful and seemed to have the best discounts with a 50% cut. Other designers were either 1/3-off or 25% off Century 21’s already discounted prices.

It appears as if Dolce & Gabanna enthusiasts will make out best. Many of their sexy dresses are priced around $250 and corset tops are $150. In fact, most of the designer dresses from the likes of Alberta Ferretti, Rochas, Salvatore Ferragamo, Moschino, Derek Lam and Chloe ranged from $100 to $300.

The majority of the most desirable clothing on sale was limited to dresses, while many of the separates were in rough shape and largely unappealing styles. However, we were a bit shocked to find a boxy Chloe cropped leather jacket reduced to a mere $166! (Even the See by Chloe label prices a cropped leather jacket for nearly $1000.)

Be sure to browse the racks of designer outerwear, which are all 50% off. We found amazing classic Jil Sander trenches, Dolce Gabanna and Jason Wu woolen numbers priced between $250 to $350. A quick sweep of the wall racks may also be in order since most of the diffusions lines like McQ, Just Cavalli and Vivienne Westwoord Anglomania are hanging at half off.

Over in the shoe department there is a great selection of designer footwear included in the markdown. Most shoes are now an extra 25% off. Our favorite finds were the $199 Chloe leather wedges but a Ferragamo version is a budget steal at $99. While not on sale, we couldn’t help but notice the abundance of Tory Burch shoes, including their flower ballet espadrille flats for $80 and green leather Reva-esque wedges for $150. While the shoe section is usually hit or miss, the prospect of finding discounted Manolos and Casadei pumps is worth the extra effort.

Louboutin, Prada and Lanvin Discounts Galore

Remember when we told you about our new favorite discount store near Grand Central? We'll we went back and were over-the-moon with the selection we found. Lux Brands has received a huge shipment of inventory straight from Europe and the merchandise is fantastic.

While sorting through the well-edited racks we found Prada lip dresses for $399. This classic print is currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as part of the Schiaparelli and Prada exhibit,  was worn by Lana del Rey and was a full price sell-out at Bergdorf Goodman. Other Prada standouts include a basic but classic dress with a belt for $299 and a tweed skirt, also a museum showcase, for $249.

For those looking for something more edgy, the boutique has an Acne for Lanvin hooded blazer for $249 and a show stopping Gucci peasant blouse for $199. The store also has a limited run of Christian Loubtouins and in season Prada wedges. In the bag section, you won't want to miss a Stella McCarney Falabella for $599 and a gorgeous Versace black leather shoulder bag for $499.

As you can see, we are talking about real fashion for true discount prices. This is a distention that should not be missed!

Zara Sale and Massimo Dutti Opening

Zara's semi-annual sale will start Thursday, June 28. The markdown will range from 30% to 50% off and also be available online. Children's clothing and slow selling women's items are usually found at the deeper discounts, while popular shoe and bag styles are reduced less.

Zara isn't keen on price adjustments but if you want to get the top picks you can grab sale merchandise a day or two before the sale officially starts. As July heats up, Zara will likely take the top markdown to 70%.

In other Zara news, the parent company's higher-end retail concept, Massimo Dutti, is getting ready to open a Fifth Avenue flagship and extensively advertising job openings. A recent job post reads, "Massimo Dutti is part of the Inditex group which is one of the largest fashion retailers in the world. Its GLOBAL FLAGSHIP store will be opening soon in the heart of NYC’s Fifth Avenue!"

Massimo Dutti is self described as "offering a wide variety of men’s and women’s fashions, ranging from sophisticated, high-end, to easygoing casual wear. Garments are always of a high quality combining luxury with comfort. Pure natural fabrics, subtle textures and innovative blends, achieve nothing short of a flawless look."

As for the former statements... shoppers will be the ultimate judges of quality and sophistication!

Ippolita Sample Sale

By ManhattanMataHari

Last year, Ippolita’s first sample sale debuted to rave reviews. This year, we wanted to see if the venue switch to Soiffer Haskin would have an impact to the fantastic prices and wonderful shopping environment. So we went to investigate.

We got  to the sale late Sunday afternoon on the opening day and there was about an hour long wait to get in. The environment indeed maintained it's orderly atmosphere and the best part was that there was no line to check out.

It appears that the majority of prices are quite similar to those at the last sale. The jewelry was all discounted 65% off retail and included lots of rainbow colored gemstones bangles in both yellow and white gold, as well as their sterling silver collection. Don’t confuse the numerous large $248.75 hooped gemstone earrings for their jeweled bangles, which will run you upward of $675.

The savings is considerable on Ippolita's gem bangles that retail for about $2000 and are best when stacked. If plain silver is your thing, there is a huge selection of various silver stackable bangles that are priced at $87.50 and up. Their resin fashion jewelry has the largest discount at 75% off retail. The resin bangles last year were just $50 but this year, most styles cost about $70.

Some of our favorite deals from this time around are their fashionable gem teardrop necklaces in silver, and the small cabochon gem rings, which both come in just under $130. There is a good selection of Ippolita 10K yellow gold line, but it is still pricy even with the discount.

We do not suggest missing out on this sale – keep in mind the items with the red dots are the last of their style, so don’t put them down!

The It-it: A Top Knot

This June heatwave has us reconsidering our entire summer beauty regimen. We are throwing out the blowdryer and majorly limiting makeup. Lipgloss is always a necessity but, that's it!

As an alternative, we are opting for this season's most popular hairstyle-- the top knot. The top knot is basically a bun configured at the crown of your head. The northern ballerina hairstyle was popularized by street-blogger stylists and is now making it's way to the beach-shore-lake-mountians near you.

There are basically two different types of top knots. There is the messy top knot, which you would likely find paired with drop crotch pants and the very neat top knot, that's become an icon of Oscar de la Renta.

SepBella has a really quick YouTube tutorial on how to create a messy top knot:

1. High ponytail
2. Tease sections of the pony tail
3. Wrap the teased hair and secure with bobby pins

Simple right?

Than there's the Oscar de la Renta top knot, which is as elegant and understated as the designer's fashion. This look can take a bit more preparation but the payoff is big. We found model Amanda Frank's tutorial to be extremely helpful.

So read up and sweep your hair up as high as the temperatures because you know the top knot is this summer's hottest hairstyle!

Mikimoto Sample Sale Overview

The ultra lux Mikimoto sample sale is heating up once again. The sale started today and those willing to venture into the heat were welcomed with savings from 50% to 70% off retail prices.

Usually on the first day of the sale shoppers can wait for hours in the jewelry brand's showroom hallway. This year, the turnout was much less and by late afternoon the there was no line at all. Prices for Mikimoto branded pearls range from $3000 for smaller items to about $12,000 for a large pearl ring. Pendants range from about $1000 to $4000.

If you're looking to spend much less you should consider the Blue Lagoon collection. Blue Lagoon is normally found in higher volume jewelry retailers like Zales. In this section you can find pearl pendants for under $200 and bracelets for under $1500. Pearl earrings were priced between priced $300 to $400.

Usually we suggest waiting towards the end of the sale to avoid waiting in line but this year we say, go for it. You might consider skipping the sale altogether if you've been before because the merchandise is mainly the same. Always remember, pearls are graded like diamonds and  buying a Mikimoto pearl is like buying a Tiffany diamond. You can easily find similar quality for less money at a trusted local jewelry store.

Marshalls Downtown Shoe MegaShop

By ManhattanMataHari

When most of us hear about downtown shopping we immediately think of pricey boutiques. If you're in the Astor Place area we suggest that you seek out the nearly incognito Marshalls Shoe MegaShop. The two story of discount shoes and accessory emporium is full of shoe options that will please even the most picky shopper.

Although the store is very large it's not as overwhelming as DSW. The majority of the shoe stock is contemporary but  that's what local, budget conscience NYU students need, right? With a bit of searching, however, you can find some higher-end brand shoes that can even please a Madison Avenue shopper.

We suggest heading straight to the sales racks where most of the designer shoes land. There you can find Salvatore Ferragamo chain slides and Ralph Lauren Collection wedges for about $100. Brightly colored $150 Kate Spade wedges are very current season and we adored Jean-Michel Cazabat open toed booties that were just $129.

Some of the best deals we found were Sam Edelman sandals for under $40 and popular Louboutin-esque spiked back pumps for a cool $79. The perfect look-for-less item, right?

Department Store's Second Markdown

It's been about a month since department stores started their first markdown and shoppers will be trilled to learn that Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys and Bergdorf Goodman have cut prices once again. Discounts now range from 40% to 60% off but prices seem to range widely between stores.

The sale at Saks has gone from 30% off shoes and to about 50% off and 40% off designer clothing to about 55% off. The markdowns at Bergdrof are now 50% off shoes and 60% off clothing. Over at Barneys the discount on shoes range from 40% to 60% off but most designer clothing is still discounted just 40%.

It seems as if Bergdof Goodman is your best bet for one-stop shopping but we suggest implementing a price comparison system. Online is always a great place to start. As a matter of fact, it seems as if Barneys has implemented a new website, which hopefully translates into a better inventory tracking system. Maybe this season shoppers won't be hit with out-of-stock email several weeks after placing their order. We're keeping our fingers crossed!

Louboutin Spring Sale

Most retailers of Christian Louboutin will start their red soled shoe sale on Thursday. Coinciding with the markdown, the Louboutin boutique  host a private sale night where VIP customers will be the first to shop from the assortment of discounted shoes.

Last season, the discount for shoes was 30% to 40% and handbags were a deal at 50% off retail. Unlike the department stores the boutique's selection and sizes tend to be limited. To attend the Louboutin boutique sale you must RSVP by email.

Those looking for a more sane sale environment may want to head over to a local department store. We find that Saks Fifth Avenue is the best of the bunch when it comes to presale shopping. Above is a select assortment of Louboutin's included in the Saks markdown.

Chanel Private Sale Details

Chanel's private sale officially started this week but getting hold of sale merchandise--which includes a limited number of bag styles-- can be difficult. The official Chanel sale kicks off on Thursday and the discount is 30% off shoes, bags, jewelry and clothing.

Many Chanel specialists deny that bags ever go on sale but proof that Chanel does indeed mark down a select assortment of leather and non-leather bags. Below are an assortment of items that are included in the markdown. Many stores have saved these items for established customers but with a little determination they can be tracked down. (Hint: Bloomingdales seems to have the most customer friendly sale service.)

Happy Sale-ing!

YSL Sample Sale Insider News

The YSL sample sale is not one of our favorite because of the serious hoarding and unmanageable chaos. This year, however, the sample sale has been moved to Soiffer Haskin the sale is a lot more organized but prices have gone up, of course.

We think stalking the YSL outlet at Woodbury Common is a much better option than cabbing it over to Ninth Avenue and 33rd Street. Did we mention that the outlet will ship a phone purchase? Now, that's our ideal.

Those who are inclined to shop in the vicinity of Penn Station will be rewarded with tremendous savings. We shopped the VIP preview and found most shoes are priced at $200 but Tributes and Trib Twos are $350. Boots are a steal at $350. We loved the bright colored YSL rain boots when they were in the boutique last year. At a $50 price tag you can't go wrong!

Moving on to bags, many were priced between $200 and $800. YSL muses are $700 and Muse Twos and Downtowns are $300. Clutches and wallets are $100. Don't forget to check out the jewelry, which is priced at $50.

Over in the clothing section you will find a wide assortment for both men and women. The price list is as follows: Jackets $300, pants $150, skirts $100, dresses $30, coats $600, blouses $100, sweaters $150 and tees $50.

If you're up for a classic New York sample sale, than this is the place for you. If you prefer a more civilized discount shopping environment, we suggest that you call Woodbury, especially before July 4th!

FiveStory First Markdown

FiveStory is one of Madison Avenue's newest boutiques. The brownstone, which is located just west of Madison off on 69th Street, is actually only two stories of merchandise but is very much a shopper's fairy tale.

Thankfully the five star ambiance doesn't translate entirely into four digit sticker prices. We found lots of unique designer and contemporary clothing that catered to a variety of budgets. The store's best quality is that it's owner, 26-year-old Claire Distenfeld, didn't choose the stereotypical Prada, Pucci and Gucci lineup. Most of the boutique's inventory is comprised of designers that you likely haven't seen, like Vika Gazinskaya, Roberta Furlanetto, Chianti and Parker.

Since this is FiveStory's first full season and we couldn't wait to see what had been marked down. Right now, most of the store's summer merchandise is 30% off. We found a great nude Chalayan dress marked to about $280 from $395, del Toro slippers are $257 from $265 and a tulip dress is $840 from about $1200. There are so many interesting items to look at that it was almost hard to keep track.

Although the boutique does not hit the mark of rivaling 10 Corso Como in Milan or Colette in Paris, it is a refreshing alternative to the average glossy big brand store. We liken the space to a more intimate Henri Bendel circa 1980s (not today!).

Next markdown you can bet we will be walking out with more than one shopping bag!

The It-it: Clé de Peau Makeup Remover

By ManhattanMataHari
While French Beauté company Clé de Peau is best known for their cult-favorite concealer stick, we are more impressed with their make-up remover. Démaquillant Pour Les Yeux, aka makeup remover, is a miracle worker with everything from waterproof mascara to lipstick.

We especially love that Démaquillant is gentle enough for contact wearers but also effective at removing long-lasting eye makeup without the need of scrubbing your lids. After all, eye area skin is very delicate and even rubbing your eyes can contribute to sagging and fine lines. Not a good thing.

Cle de Peau's dual-layer emulsion formula requires a quick shake to mix the ingredients, which include both a CE Generating Complex and Cellular IC Normalizer to improve skin’s appearance and vitality. A quick swipe over your lids leaves them moisturized and makeup free. The best part is that there is no oily residue. You can even reapply makeup after use, which is often very difficult with many oil based make-up removers.

Yes, some might say that this is major beauty investment at $50 for 4.2 ounces, but a tiny bit goes a long way on a cotton pad. Be sure to ask for the large sample trial/travel sizes at the counter with your purchase-- or before your purchase if you want to give it a test drive first.

Madison Ave Sales Continued

By ManhattanMataHari

Most presales have already ended and discounts are now widely available up and down the avenue. Last week we looked for presale bargains at some of our favorite Madison Avenue boutiques and this week we are bringing you more, more, more. Tis' the season!!!

Bally usually takes a more conservative approach to markdown season with a 20% to 25% cut. This year, Bally fans will be happy to learn that the sale ranges from 30% to 40%. Sale merchandise includes, select shoes, handbags, accessories and clothing.
Louis: 212-751-9082

Brunello Cucinelli

Brunello Cucinelli
Most people aren’t thinking of sweaters during the first week of June but then most cashmere isn’t Cucinelli. The boutique started their sale on June 1st with a 40% discount. Since their sample sale is offering a 60% cut and runs through Friday, June 8th we would suggest scoping that merchandise first.
Sample Sale: 150 E. 58th St. (bet. Lexington & 3rd Ave.), 3rd Floor. 9am – 5pm
Maria (in store): 212-813-0900

Calvin Klein Collection
Minimalist fans can now save 40% on pre-spring handbags, shoes and clothing. There are sine exclusions including, some scarves, bags and the new lingerie and sleepwear line. We expect the discount to increases to 60% within the next few weeks.
Erin: 212-292-9000

Starting Thursday, June 7th the haute Celine will discount ready-to-wear a cool 40% off retail. Covetable accessories will be marked down 30%. While the popular luggage totes will not be part of the discounted merchandise, there will be a few seasonal style handbags included.
Miguel: 212-535-3703

Emilio Pucci
Spring and summer sale merchandise is discounted 40% and is selling out quickly. Many styles and sizes are running low in the clothing section. For now, swimwear is excluded. No large scarves are discounted, although some 90x90 scarves from past collections are sale along with small leather goods. We are told that there won’t be a second markdown.
Yoku: 212-230-1135

Loro Piana
Light wear cashmere silk blends will be on sale starting June 22. The markdown has not been decided but we be surprised if the discount was 40%. Summer scarves are usually available, although no heavy cashmere will be included.
Charmane: 212-980-7961

Max Mara
The Max Mara sale officially starts June 7. The markdown is 30% off everything from the spring and collection. Private sale customers already took a big bite from the sale merchandise and stock is dwindling. Women who wear size 6s and 8s will have the most from which to choose.
Fernando: 212-879-6100

Nicole Miller
Early spring dresses, sportswear, gowns and accessories are now 70% off retail--including some of their seasonal metallic ruched dresses. Full season summer clothing is only 30% but there will be further markdowns soon.
Rilda: 212-288-9779

Nicole Miller

Reed Krakoff
Spring and summer clothing and shoes are 40% off retail while seasonal colored handbags are at a 30% discount. This sale is expected to go through July and there should be second cut towards July 4th. Although Reed is best known for his bags and accessories we are always big fans of his ready-to-wear collections. Don’t be afraid to check it out.
Jarvis: 212-988-0560

Roberto Cavalli
This season’s sale just stared on June 1, so expect to find plenty of their sexy flowing dresses and swimsuits for a 40% discount. This may go up depending on what Italy decides to do – although with their economic woes, we wouldn’t be surprised to hear about a second markdown soon.

Tom Ford Half-Off

Tom Ford can do no wrong. Even his sales hit exactly the right note. Why bother with first, second and third markdowns when you can get straight to the point?

Right now, the Tom Ford boutique is hosting a sale where most merchandise is 50% off. The Carine bag, which is one of our favorites, is now about $1600 and the softest leather jacket you've ever kissed is now $5000. All shoes except for a pair of alligator pumps and plush velvet slippers are also half-off.

The same enticing sale is occurring in the men's department. We would love to speculate that there could be another markdown but we doubt it. We suggest shopping now for the best selection.

Mr. Porter On Sale

Sometimes we feel bad that some amazing men's sales are left out from time to time. We are trying to incorporate more information for our gentleman shoppers but sometimes the gravitational pull to handbags and stilettos is just too strong.

Those of the male gender and those who shop for them will be happy to know that Mr. Porter has started their seasonal sale. The markdown is up to 50% off and there are lots of great discount items from which to choose. Basically, a lot of the 50% merchandise is from the winter collection.

We quickly snatched a winter coat we missed at Barneys last season for half off along with a few pair of jeans. For those who have eyes for leather Balmain, might want to wait a bit. Like the women's site, there's always room for a second markdown.

DVF Raises Sample Sale Prices

Today marked the beginning of the bi-annual Diane von Furstenberg sample sale. As usual, wrap dresses and wonderful silk prints were plentiful. Prices, however have gone up a bit from last season.

In prior seasons, blouses and sweaters were $80 but this season they are priced at $90. The biggest price jump was in the handbag and leather goods section. Last season, bags topped out at $250 but this season they are priced up to $285.

It's not surprising that DVF has raised their prices. Since we started covering the sale in 2009, prices have remained the same. Unfortunately, we can't say the same for retail price tags.

Those shopping the DVF online sample sale will be less satisfied. Online dresses range from $150 to $337. If you're in the market for really great prices, we suggest waiting for markdowns at the Flatiron sale. We suspect discounts will start Wednesday afternoon. Inventory is replenished throughout the sale, so don't be shy about stalk-shopping. Prices for this season and last season are below.

DVF Sample Sale
Tuesday, June 5 through Saturday, June 9

Chanel Summer Sale

Although almost every designer has thrown his merchandise into the discount ring, there are a few exceptions. Chanel is among the few designers that hold out for their first markdown. This year, we hear that the Chanel sale will officially being on June 14.

The sale usually consists of clothing and shoes from the spring and summer collections. Bags that are seasonal and non-leather are often included in the markdown. When it comes to sale handbags, we are talking about a Chanel canvas beach bag rather and not a salmon mini-classic. There are no specifics on which bags may be included.

Prices for the first markdown are 30% and many boutiques and department stores will begin taking presales beginning Monday, June 4. While browsing online, we found the above assortment of shoes, which will be included in the markdown.

DVF Online Sample Sale

Diane von Furstenberg has an alternative plan for those who can't make it downtown for the sample sale or wish not to shop among throngs of aggressive discount shoppers. For the first time, shoppers can access DVF's sample sale when they log onto

Those who register their email addresses will be able to shop for discounted DVF starting June 4th. Like the real sale, the online version goes public on June 5th. The downside is that we don't expect for there to be a $50 "sample rack" at the online sale.

You can click here to read our previous post, which outlines the ins and outs of the DVF sample sale. Happy clicking!

Iris Fabulous Shoe Sale

There are few instances that are more frustrating than lusting over an item all season, waiting for sale time and finding out the store has run out of your size. Suddenly, you find yourself in a frenzy searching for your desired purchase.

When it comes to shoes, however, we never worry because we have a secret backup plan. Iris, which is located in the Meatpacking District, stocks the FULL line of shoes from Chloe, Rochas, Marc Jacobs, Jil Sander, Michael Kors, Nina Ricci and more. Iris is the type of resource that is especially priceless, in an environment where department stores insist on exclusives and even the brand owned boutiques limit their assortment.

What’s even better is that Iris is hosting a sale where spring and summer shoes are 50% to 30% off. That’s an even better discount than Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman or nearby Jeffery. Bascially, all the premier collections are 50% off and the contemporary brands, like See by Chloe are 30%.

If you can’t make it downtown we suggest checking out the store’s affiliated Giutzy website, which is hosting a similar sale. Just don’t wait too long because plan C often coincides with desperation and usually results in overpaying.
