Guide to Getting In: Manolo, Louboutin & Choo

Early May is turning out to be the trifecta in shoe sample sales. Manolo, Louboutin and Choo have all decided that now is the perfect time to unload their overstock. Like any triathlon these sales will test your endurance and your loyalty to sample sales.

In light of the current situation, we thought we would create a full on survival guide. Anyone who is adverse to long lines or crowds is better waiting for a good department store discount or shopping a discount store with top shoe brands, like DSW. If you're continuing on with this post, we will assume you're willing to take the plunge and play footsie with the big girls.

Below are specific hints on how to manage through three of the toughest sales of the season:

Manolo Blanhik
Wednesday, May 8th (invite-only)
Thursday, May 9th (public day)
Doors open at 9am
Warwick Hotel, 65 W 54th St. & 6th Ave, 2nd fl.

Manolo Blanhik is one sale that treats its customers like, well, customers. Attendees are invited to take a number, on in this case letter, and come back in a specified amount of time. Alterntivily, shoppers can wait in the ballroom but why sit around when you can do some shopping damage while you're waiting to shop?

Most shoppers usually start arriving by 7am on the first public day but we have been to the press event and the public day and the two experiences don't compare. As you would expect, a full day of editor shopping with Andre Leon Talley can wipe out an entire collection.

If you want to shop with the big fish you're going to need to shop on Wednesday. Getting onto that coveted invitation list is not easy but is not impossible. In this instance, social media is literally your friend. Use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and even Vine to connect with those who have their foot in the door. We suggest directing your searches to company employees and those who have editorial connections with the brand.

Jimmy Choo
Tuesday, May 7th, 12pm~7pm through Wednesday, May 8th, 9am~7pm
Tues 12pm to 7pm, Wed 9am to 7pm
Metropolitan Pavilion
123 W. 18th St. (btwn. 6th & 7th Ave), 4th Floor

Generally speaking, sample sales never really begin at noon. If you ever see a noon start time you can safely assume that there will be a select list of early shoppers-- as is the case with this sale. If you're looking to avoid a four hour line and get the best pick you can apply our social media tactic but because of the scale of this event you can spread your net to buyers and service suppliers.

The line to get into the Jimmy Choo sale is the most grueling of all these sales. One season the line spanned the full length of West 18th Street then wrapped up 7th Avenue and continued along West 19th Street. It was over four hours long!! Prices for most styles are $225. That's about 60% to 80% off being that retail prices for pumps normally run from about $595 to about $795. Real bargain hunters should opt for the "damages" that are all priced at $75.

Our best advise is to wait until the afternoon of the last day and avoid all lines. As an extra bonus, those who can away until the end of the sale may be rewarded with extra discounts. Last season, the damage pile was reduced to just $50. Imagine the time you will save and the amount of Choos you can take home if they are just $50!

Christian Louboutin
Monday, May 13 through Friday, May 17
Daily 9am to 5pm, Fri. 9am to 3pm
306 W. 38th St. (bet. 8th & 9th Ave.)

The Christian Louboutin sale is the most difficult of the year. It's no wonder, considering the whole corporate culture of the brand. To break into this bank of red soles you're going to have to leave the cyber world and make some real world friends.

Each invitation comes with one guest, which means that everyone attending the sale can bring a buddy. The thing is that most people who go to the sale seem to fly solo. We suggest that those who are clawing for an invite make a quick on-line (not, online) friend.

Prices at Louboutin usually start at the $225 mark go up to $550 for boots. There's no restocking and by mid-week most sizes are almost completely sold out. Those who wear a size 6 or below or 9.5 and above usually can take adavantage of the most fuitful selection.

Happy Saling!!!!

Inside Thakoon's Sample Sale

If you're looking for motivation to stick with your current diet or exercise regimen, look no further than Thakoon Panichgul's sample sale. The selection and prices are noteworthy but those who fit into a sample size four will make out better than a thief with a king's ransom.

The sale is basically broken down to four color coded prices, which run $50, $100, $150 and $200. Most samples are a straight size four and are priced at $50 or $150 for more elaborate pieces. The open sock for both Thakoon and Thakoon Addiction are priced the same way.

Hot pink Thakoon dresses were $150 as was a full gold lame maxi dress. There's a lot of stock from the resort 2012 collection including, the black and white story and yellow and white combinations. Most of the tops are priced at $150 and the dresses are generally $200. (You can use these pictures for reference.)

The selection also includes items from this spring season, including lots of aqua and bright prints with gold. This butterfly dress was $150 but is in Saks for $920. We also found some wonderful floral trenches with retail prices upwards of $1500 marked down to $100.

Mixed into the color coated dots were a few more ornate items like a full lather dress for $300, a brown leather jacket for $250 and a heavy winter dress with lots of ornate beading for $400. Along the floor shoppers who wear a size 40 shoe will have lots of $100 from which to choose.

The sale does have a small amount of open stock and some styles even have a full size range. We even spotted a few skirts in a size 10 and dresses in size 8s. So not all is lost if you're not a svelte size four.  You can see a full set of pictures from our shopping trip with a clicky clicky right here.

Get Ready: Louboutin Sample Sale

The Christian Louboutin sample sale is legend among sample sale fanatics. It's closed to the public and invitations are as covetted as one to the Met Ball. We are not sure why the brand is so difficult with its sample sale but you can always count on a flurry of excitement when word leaks.

Unconfirmed sources tell us that this season's sale will begin Monday, May 13th and run all week. Press invitations are scheduled to begin Wednesday, May 15th. Each press invitation includes a guest. So if you're looking to score a moment to shop your best bet would be with a media contact.

Prices are highly discounted with most styles start coming in at the $225 mark and ranging up to $550 for boots. Espadrille wedges may be found for $150 but that would be the bottom of the barrel.

We will be sure to bring you Louboutin sample sale coverage up to and throughout the sale. Please feel free to email and tweet us info and pictures.

True Samples, Insanely Low Prices at Kim Ovitz

By ManhattanMataHari

If you're petite and fit into a true sample size then you're going to need to go to the Kimberly Ovitz sample sale. Size 4s brace yourselves!

All collection pieces are $25 (many of her dresses retail in the $400 range) and her diffusion line O is all $15. There are many of Ovitz’s signature diaphanous jersey dresses which are appropriate for the season, but the most desirable styles we spotted were long sleeved collection dresses. There are some gorgeous body-con beige patterned dresses reminiscent of Lindsay Lohan’s now-infamous “Glavis” dress, as well as a neat gray dress with tiered silk sleeves. A basic black wool sheath dress with perfect tailoring and back zipper detail was a standout, along with a fancy gold sequined cocktail dress with back cutout.

For those of us not a perfect size 4, the O by Kimberly Ovitz line has some great high-low cut “Haru” tencel dresses that's more forgiving and perfect for a pool or beach cover-up --especially at just $15. There are also some sample bins on the floor, but the majority of the items are still pinned or unfinished. There is also a rack of pants available, but nobody seemed that interested in them.

Be cautioned there are no fitting rooms, so layer appropriately for try-ons. Since there will be no restocking, it is better to check this sale out earlier rather than later. A nice bonus? Each purchase comes with a reusable eco-friendly Kimberly Ovitz tote bag.

Worthy Sample Sales: Part 1

We are heading into prime sample sale season and the remainder of the month is turning into a behive of activity. Below are a few of our favorites. We will be sure to add information as sales and details become available.

Kimberly Ovitz
The sale takes place in the designer's showroom, which almost always translates to great prices. We are told that the merchandise will be comprised of samples and overstock from past seasons. Collection pieces are $25, O by Kimberly Ovitz merchandise is $15 and damages are $10. At the last sale we found the legendary “Glavis” dress for $200 and a white sleeveless version for just $100. You can click here to read more details from the last sale.

Proenza Schouler
Design virtuosos Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler are hosting a sample sale in their showroom. (Yes, again, that means great prices!) The merchandise will be comprised of fall 2012 leftovers, samples and one-of-a-kind pieces. We are told that sale prices will range from $30 to $1,950 on items that were originally priced from $225 to $6,495.

Friday, April 26 through Saturday, April 27
10am to 6pm daily
76 Mercer St btwn Spring & Broome

Thakoon Panichgul is inviting shoppers into his showroom to take advantage of great deals on samples and overstock from his spring collection and diffussion line. We are huge fans of this sale despite the fact that the signature collection is still a bit pricey. The best deals are for Thakoon Addition, which seems to get better every season. You can read more details from the past sample sale right here. P.S. Press are usually invited to shop a day early...

Alexander Wang Sample Sale

Please note: An Alexander Wang spokesperson responded that the there is no planned sale on Thursday. Seems like our normally "reliable sources" could be mistaken. While this could be an CNN moment, we will continue to monitor the situation.

The Alexander Wang sale was so popular last season that passersby assumed that the line outside was for voting rather than gaining entrance to a popular sale. At one point, "experts" estimated that there were over 300 people waiting to get their hands on discount Wang-wears.

This season,  spies tell us that the brand is trying a different approach and not publicizing this sale. Insiders say that the sale will start this Thursday. Sale shoppers can expect to save up to 70% off of cloths, 65% off bags and shoes and 60% off the lower-end T Wang collection.

Early on at the last sale we found large Emile totes (retail $975) for $400 and Diego Bucket bags. Clutches and small bags were $250 to $300, medium bags were $350 and large bags were $400. Small leather goods were priced between $70 and $90. Shoes were gently priced at $200 and exotic leather versions were $300. We thought that the clothing was a bit on the pricey side but found some great leather jackets for $300 and more fashionable dresses for $300. T Wang ranged in price from $35 to $120.

You can see a full account of last season's sale right here. In the case you find yourself behind 300 shoppers, we suggest you turn around and head to the Saks friends and family sale. Wang, and most other designers, is just not worth a three hour wait!

Coming Soon: DVF x Gap Kids

One of the highlights of spring shopping last year was the collection by Gap Kids that was designed by Diane von Furstenberg. The clothing was playful, high quality and well priced. (Especially when it went on clearance.) It's an understatement to say that we are excited about DVF's new Gap Kids collection, which is launching later this week in just 22 Gap stores. You can click here to see a list of stores that carry the designer line. Unfortunately, the Upper East Side Gap is not on the list.

The safari themed collection officially launches on Thursday, but us lucky New York shoppers can get some DVF mini starting Wednesday at Gap’s 680 Fifth Avenue location. We hear that the designer will even be on location assisting shoppers. (That's reason enough for us!) Sizes range from newborn to 14 years but unlike other kid's collaborations this collection doesn't translate well to even small adult bodies.

We suggest buying the items a size larger than norm. The collection is so cute that your kids are sure to want to wear the cloths more than one season. As a matter of fact, my girls liked the blazers from the last collection so much that they recently inquired how they could engage the iconic von Frustenberg to redesign their school uniforms. Imagine how smart the kids would look!

Samples at the Scotch & Soda Sale

By ManhattanMataHari

Looking to update your spring wardrobe with some fashion forward prints straight out of Amsterdam for 70% off retail? If so, then plan on hitting up the first ever stateside Scotch & Soda and Maison (the women’s line) sample sale. We got a preview of the sale and came found lots of plaid and print for the urban lumberjack.

Since the merchandise is comprised of a selection for men, woman and children. For women, the inventory is true samples, many items are one-of-a-kind statement pieces. We felt the best selection was the separates, including some nice brightly colored basic tops starting at just $20. In addition, there are plenty of signature plaid button downs for $40. Our favorite finds were cool wool boucles, metallic blazers and light jackets for $100. Down jackets are $125.

The plentiful selection of pants for $45 come in in multiple styles – everything from colored jeans to silky printed pajama style pants. On-trend black tuxedo pants with sequin details were a particular standout among a sea of brights and prints. There are also a couple racks of cute shorts for $35.

Be sure to check out the walls adorned with lightweight colorful summer scarves and accessories under $40.  Although the prices are quite discounted we would stay uptown unless you already identified with this look.

Design on a Dime: Home Furnishing Deals

Every year Housing Works hosts a fundraising event called Design on a Dime. The event highlights the world's most celebrated interior designers who are asked to create room vignettes with new merchandise that is donated and then sold for 50% to 70% off retail.

The Opening Night Reception, which will take place on Thursday, April 25, is celebrated with hundreds of VIPs, designers and Housing Works supporters. A-list design enthusiasts mingle with top designers and attendees are encouraged to purchase the exhibited merchandise. You can buy Opening Night tickets here. Experts consider this one of the best bargain sales with the most stylish pieces.

As usual, you will want to attend the opening night to get the best pieces but those looking to design on a penny may want to wait until the very end of the event-- Saturday, April 27. Last year, the prices of all remaining merchandise was slashed to small fractions of their value.

Remember, all proceeds benefit Housing Works, which serves people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. So, shop early, shop late but shop and look great!

Sold Out: Chanel Espadrilles

It's become increasingly difficult to justify most Chanel items since their crazy inflation began to resemble the hyperinflation of Zimbabwe in 2008. Bags have almost doubled in price since 2009 and shoes that used to seem expensive at $500 are now priced closer to $1000.

So when Chanel introduces a functional shoe under $400 you have to believe that women are going to clamor. The Chanel cotton espadrille was introduced last summer at the agreeable price point of $395. This season, the brand has extended the popular and functionable shoe lineup with the addition of a leather tip and a mesh body. The mesh body style is still a realistic $450. Problem is, they are mostly all sold out.

Chanel boutiques across the country have no cotton canvas styles in their inventory and the mesh version is almost completely gone too. Most shoppers have turned to eBay where sellers have jacked up the price of these popular shoes to close to $700.

If you're on the hunt, we suggest calling high-end independant boutiques or finding a department store sales person who is willing to put in the time to search through national inventories. We suggest Nordstrom or Saks. Other than that, we wish you good luck!!!

Inside the Jil Sander Sale

The Jil Sander sample sale started today for invited guests, which included lots of stylists and fashion journalists. Not sure which of those categories Soon-Yi Previn (yes, that's Woody Allen's wife) falls into, but she was there too. The sale opens to the public tomorrow but we have the inside details.

Tuesday shoppers can expect long lines, very long lines. Last season, Sander fans waited up to three hours to enter the sale during the first day. Despite the 80% discount you may not be as thrilled as anticipated. Some of the women's inventory is from the current spring line-up that is now in stores but most of the merchandise seems to be returns or overstock from the winter 2012 collection.

The spring collection is Jil Sander's first designs for her band after three years away. Most critics thought the collection lived up to it's minimalism nature but that's not very original these days. One of the season's iconic pieces, a maroon v-neck coat dress with exaggerated pockets is under $500 from $1900. Towards the back of the showroom there is a selection of shoes and bags. The bag selection is very small and is made up mostly of totes that are priced at 80% off retail. Shoes are mostly from the winter season and range in price from $60 to about $200.

As usual, there is a selection of men's pants, shirts, sweaters and coats. Beware, there are no changing rooms and only two mirrors available to share with other shoppers. Overall, this sale offers great discounts but much of the merchandise is difficult to pull-off even for the most adept style blogger.

Killer Shoe Sale: Celine, Fendi, Manolo Prada and More!

If you’re waiting for a great deal on shoes you might need to wait at least another month. That is unless, you take a trip town to Gabay’s Outlet...

The discounter has received a large shipment of designer shoes that includes Lanvin, Charlotte Olympia, Giuseppe Zanotti, Valentino, Manolo, Fendi, Celine, Prada and MORE. The discount on most pairs are more than 60% off. You can see a full gallery of pictures by clicking here. There’s one just one catch. There is only one size of each style.

During our most recent trip we were drooling over the prices as much as the shoes-- especially considering how the prices of basic pumps have inflated to close to $1000. Gabay's prices are much more attainable. For example, iconic studded Atwood platform heels are $420 from $935 and Lanvin basic flats are $240 from $515. Last season's spacey silver Celine wedges are $325 from $750 and Manolo high boots are $575 from $1265. You get the picture, right?

Whether you prefer a sparkly Jimmy Choo or a nude patent Zanotti platforms, Gabay’s is the perfect spot to get your weekend shopping started on the right foot.

The discount on beauty at Lord & Taylor is 10% but when you shop the rest of the store you can save a full 25% off. What's even better is that there are few exclusions. The sale starts Saturday, April 13th and runs more than a week through Monday, April 22.

Markdowns for Vivier's Last Day

By ManhattanMataHari

The Roger Vivier sample sale started Friday with fans waiting up to four hours to snatch pilgrim buckles for a discount. Today is the last day of the epic sale and shoppers who had restraint will be rewarded with an additional 25% off. Just in time, yesterday, before closing, we checked out what stock was still left at the Vivier sale.

There is still a great selection of merchandise but the towers of size options have been noticeably depleted. Those who wear a size 39 shoe will have the most to choose from while popular small sizes will have the much fewer options.

All the red boxes are all arranged by style, with the buckled versions populating the middle left area of the space. There are not many buckled flats left aside from sandals with crystal embellishments, which run from $500 to $650. (Plus the extra 25% off, don't forget.) There are more styles of buckled wedges priced at $275 and buckled pumps and peep toes for $375. Non-buckled heels in satin and leather can still be found for $250, as well as strappy versions for $275.

At the back left there are tables full last pairs sorted by size. This is where smaller footed ladies will have the most luck. We found our favorite find of the day – buttery soft black leather over the knee boots priced at $1200 (but come out to just $900 with the additional discount). There are only a handful of boots and booties left throughout the venue, like a black fur lined mid calf version for $850. On the right of the space there is a dwindling supply of exotic leather and feather adorned pumps ranging from $525 to $725. Directly across are iconic flower adorned heels for $600.

Towards the back right, shoppers will find an extensive handbag selection. Prices range from $375 for small leather bags in a rainbow of colors to $1000 for more ornate clutches. Medium and large leather totes will set you back $625 to $725. (These items are also now an additional 25% off too.) There are some  belts  all priced at $200. Nearby is also a very small selection of gloves and overpriced (and somehow tarnished) costume jewelry, as well as some small leather wallets.

We wouldn't expect any more price reductions during the course of the day but you will be relieved to know that there shouldn't be any lines either. Now, that's what we call a worth while sample sale experience!

Coming Soon: Jil Sander Sample Sale

By ManhattanMataHari

Minimalists mark your calendars--the Jil Sander sample sale will begin next week. The sale doesn't officially open to the public until Tuesday, April 16th but Jil Sander insiders will be able to start shopping a day early during the VIP preview.

As fans already know, this is a final opportunity to Raf Simon’s last collection. Prices will be a steep 80% to 85% discount. At last year’s sale, the selection was mostly black wool and basic fall and winter clothing marked 85% off. Lightweight cashmere sweaters for $127 were among the first items to go, although there were plenty of separates in the $50 to $100 range. Classic black wool sheath dresses were a fail safe at just under $160 and there was a good selection of wool outerwear that hovered near the $270 mark. At the last sale were were not particularly impressed by the selection of 80% off leather accessories and handbags.

While the VIP day is invite only --and there is a list at the door-- smooth talkers may have some luck towards the afternoon on Monday. Take note that VIPs do tend to scoop up some of the most highly desirable items, so determined Raf Simons fans may want to be resourceful.

Roger Vivier Sample Sale Starts Friday

The Roger Vivier sample sale is back in town starting this Friday. The five-day sample sale will offer brand fans a wide selection of shoes, bags and accessories for up to 60% off.

At the last sale, about 16-months ago, shoppers were greeted with mountains or red boxes including classic buckle flats, elaborate heels, sandals and boots. No season was left out and no style or print was omitted. In addition, there were lots of bags, including evening clutches and larger shopping totes. There was also a small but nice assortment of small leather goods and jewelry.

Any shoe with a buckle was marked 50% off the retail price. Shoes without a buckle were an additional 20% off, or 60% off retail. The price for classic buckle styles were about $275. Sandals are a bit less at $220 and boots ranged between $420 and $600. Bags cost between $425 for a long classic clutch to near $800 for lager bags. The sale also included small accessories and jewelry that were priced in the $100 to $200 range.

Those who are serious Viv fans better start clearing their balances now. Again, this is a credit card only sale and you're going to need at least $1000 if you're not disciplined enough to pick just one pair of shoes. Those unable to preview the sale early (hint-hint) should slot between two to three hours during the first day. Last year, the line to check out equaled the line to get into the sale.

Good luck!
