The Barneys Sale (Finally) Begins

The Barneys sale usually begins over the Memorial weekend but this year shoppers have been left in suspense. Fret no more, the Barneys sale is on!

Head this way to begin shopping online. Most designer clothing and shoes are 40% off and handbags are reduced by 30%. Second markdown usually begins in mid-June but the hottest items will sell out within a day or two. Clearly more variety can be found in stores but shopping online is sometimes too tempting.

We used Net-A-Porter's sale as a guide of what items are most likely to sell out first. All the links in our lookbook are the hottest fashions of the season. If past performance is indicative of future results, this merchandise will be gone within a day. Among the this season's fastest markdown sellers are the Chloe Alison tote , this Erdem dress, these bedazzled Marni platform sandals and the Lanvin hologram sneaker.

Please share what items you see going fast in the comment section below.

Net-A- Porter First Designer Markdown

Online shoppers get clicking! Net-a-Porter's summer sale started today. The luxury website's first designer markdown ranges from 30% to 80% off. The sale includes practically the entire spring-summer season worth of clothing, shoes, bags, accessories and lingerie.

We suggest that you begin loading your shopping cart, merchandise tends to flies off the NAP's virtual shelves. The best deal is currently in the denim section. A variety of Paige jeans are discounted 80% including these skinny high rise's that are $42 from $210. Most of the other clothing is reduced 50% off. We especially like this Kenzo stretch knit dress that's $343 from $685. That eyelet Thakoon Addiction dress with illusion we've been eyeing all season is now $245 from $490 (and in the cart). This Roland Mouret chantilly lace dress is classic style perfection and is reduced to $1770 from $3535. A playful Moschino shift dress is summer perfection at $250 from $500.

Shoes are reduced up to 50%. These Mother of Pearl slip-on sneakers are pretty cute and are reduced $192 from $385. Truthfully, though, we would be just as happy with $40 Vans. Gianvito Rossi python mules are $735 from $1050 and Marni slides (Birks) are $511 from $730. (Note to self: Shoes this season are surprisingly ugly!)

The discount on most handbags is just 30% and a majority of the most desirable styles like Alexander Wang's Rocco and Pierre Hardy color blocked bags are already sold out. Among the sale jewelry is this Shourouk Swarovski crystal necklace for 50% off or $290 from $580. This dainty Eugenia Kim crystal headband is $67 from $112 and this Alexander McQueen silk scarf is $255 from $425.

While shopping you will notice that the season's most iconic pieces sell out quickly. Don't feel bad if you don't catch exactly what you've been eyeing. You'll just be sure to be faster when Barneys puts their sale online later this week.

DVF Sample Sale Wrap-up

The Diane von Furstenberg sample sale is back. Today the sale opened to a huge crowd of shoppers. Although there is a lot less current season inventory than normal, there is a great selection of $50 samples that can'e be beat.

Usually this sample sale is fully stocked with the designer's wrap dresses but this season there doesn't seem to be too many of the iconic DVF item. Instead, you will find a real scattering of past seasons' fashion. A majority of the merchandise seems to be from past winters. There are coats and leather items as well as sweaters and jackets. There are no shoes, swimsuits or traditional beach coverups.

Prices are a bit better than usual. All dresses are $100 (they normally range from $125 to $150), jackets are $90 and blouses are $60. Leather and fur is priced at $150. The more ornate cocktail dresses and gowns are also $150. Sizes from from a petite zero to 14.

This season there is also a lot more $50 samples than usual. In total there are six full racks and we are told that there is a lot more sample inventory that will be pulled out as the sale continues. We found leopard print dresses and blouses, puffer coats and lots of interesting items that could not be pegged to a particular season or collection.

The best part of the sample sale is the handbag selection, which includes our favorite red patent leather lip clutch for $175. There was also another gorgeous clutch with real stingray for the same price. Smaller clutches are $75 and a large assortment of scarves are $60.

As always, the DVF sale is a worthy shop. The open stock may be more scattered than normal but a little bit of digging can yield some major rewards. We expect price cuts to start Wednesday. Jump on the jump for more pictures and pricing details.

Hervé Léger's 70% Off Online Sale

Many of us are familiar with Hervé Léger’s signature bandage designs by the seemingly endless list of Hollywood starlets and Bat Mitzvah guests donning his form fitting dresses. Now you can fit right into the a-list crowed and save 70% off on
Usually, when we see Hervé dresses on sale, they are several seasons old or a very strange style. This clearance promotion, however, includes a great variety of dresses that are seasonally perfect. This red, white and black colorblock dress is just $387 from almost $1400, an ombre one shoulder dress is about $900 from $1500 and this yellow and black a-line version is $435 from $1450.

Take note, that all these sale items are final sale. The bright side is that sizing doesn't change from season to season. Most dresses also seem to be fully stocked in a full range of sizes. We don't know how long this sale will last. We wouldn't suggest procrastinating too long.

Missoni Sale Includes Home Items

Missoni is always the first boutique on Madison Avenue to officially start their seasonal sale. What's included in the markdown can fluctuate from year to year. This year, the Missoni sale is great-- perhaps that's a bad thing for the economy.

Unlike most past seasons, this Missoni sale includes swim, scarves and select home items. Most of the merchandise from the cruise collection--that came into stores in December--is discounted 50%. Other items are discounted from 30% to 40%. A black skirt with lacquered cloth and embroidered appliqué is now $1320 from $2640 and a more classic chevron patterned silk knit dress is $1440 from $2880.

The shoes to the left of the sale section are all 50% off. Black and white runway sandals are $575 from $1150. Swimsuits, cover-ups and other beachwear are 30% off. Baskets of scarves are 35% off. Most of the brightly colored scarves now range in price from about $250 to $340 from retail prices that ran from $430 to $560.

The best part of the sale, is the wall of home goods. Shoppers can find a small assortment of towels, robes and pillows that are reduced 40%. Brightly colored large bath towels are now $192 from $320, smaller versions are $186 from $310 and robes are $228 from $380.

Last season Missoni ran a second markdown where prices were reduced 70% to 80% off. We wouldn't be surprised if we saw the same discounts this summer. The cold weather has left a lot of stores will extra merchandise. Click-jump to  see an assortment of pictures from inside the boutique.

Pre-Sale Barney's, Bergdorf & Saks

Memorial Day is traditionally known as the first day of the summer season but it's also the start of sale season. As always, we will be starting our markdown roundups. Department stores usually kick-off the retail sale season with boutiques following closely behind. It's generally taboo for a brand-owned store to begin a sale before the department stores. After all, a department store has to buy their inventory for a wholesale markup while a brand-owned boutique keeps the extra profit from a straight-to-retail model.

This week, is a big week for presales. Presale season akin to the "quiet period" before a company goes public. You can't actually buy the merchandise but you can have your broker, oh sorry-- sales person, hold your preferred items until the sale officially begins. Most stores take your credit card information and charge your account when the items ship or you pick them up.

In all instances, Chanel and Louboutin will not be marked down at any department store or boutique until the beginning of June. Nonetheless, it's never too early to plot your purchases and share your acquisition wishes with a good sales person. Second markdown usually begins at the end of June and discounts usually range from 50% to 70% off.

Online markdowns usually start over the holiday weekend. For now, we have a roundup of first markdowns at our favorite department stores:
Pre-sale at Barneys starts Tuesday. Most designer collections and shoes will be discounted 35% off. The official sale starts May 27th. We are happy that the store was a bit restrained with the uber-print trend. We suggest you do the same. Most designers won't be making such bold statements next season.
Contact: Kyri 212-833-2088

Bergdorf Goodman
Wednesday will be the first day of pre-sale at Bergdorf. The discount is 30% off shoes and 40% off clothing. Purchases will be shipped or available in the store on Sunday, May 25. We are fully committed to purchasing an Alaia dress this summer but we still might have to wait until the next markdown.
Contact: Allison: 212-872-8732

Saks Fifth Avenue
Pre-sale orders will begin Wednesday and merchandise will be available to be picked up or shipped after the holiday weekend. Shoes will start at a 30% discount while clothing will be discounted 40%. Most designer merchandise is included. We always appreciate the Vionnet collation at Saks, although we believe it could be a bit larger.

Tibi Sample Sale

Feeling chic is an essential part of the Madison Avenue personality. Pulling off the summer casual chic, however, can sometimes be more challenging than the dressing-up chic. In these times Tibi is an easy stand-by. Eye catching prints and bright colored dresses can dress up the most dismal days packed with errands.
Sure we love a great dress but $600 for a casual items is cause for thought. Most days, we rather save our $600 for Saks' third floor or Bergdorf's second floor. Tibi at a fraction of the price, however, makes our compass turn.

This week, Tibi is hosting a sample sale where clothing, swimwear, shoes and home accessories will be priced up to 70% off retail. The best are always the $65 skirts and tops and pants for $75. Most dresses are priced between $150 and $175 but keep your eyes on their Facebook page for extra 20% to 50% off.

Get to Know COS & Save 25%

H&M's untra-chic little sister, COS, recently launched their website to American customers and we couldn't be more thrilled. You see, COS is modern, sleek and super affordable. COS is less expensive than Zara but has the look and feel of Jil Sander. Who can ask for anything more?

COS has plans to open a store on Spring Street in the fall. For now you can shop the online store and save 25% off and free shipping on all orders through June 30th.

Come, take a look. Check out this poplin cotton cap sleeve dress in power blue. It's just $115 and, we are told, the quality similar to a higher-end designer. These better-looking-than Birkenstock leather sandals are $125 and this cutout necklace is a mixture of Lanvin and Marni and is priced at just $39. COS even has a great assortment of children's clothing.

Ironically, Rebekka Bay, the lead designer of COS just jumped ship to Gap. Although, we didn't find Gap's current spring collection very interesting. Gap's fall lookbook has a striking resemblance to the signature COS style. Check it out here. Fashion insiders are betting that Rebekka Bay could be the new Jenna Lyons. (J. Crew's head designer.) In the meantime, we highly suggest you familiarize yourself with COS now because it's sure to make a big style impact.

VBH Boutique Private 40% Off Sale

The über-luxury handbag company, VBH is hosting a limited-time promotion where select handbags are reduced 40%. This is a rare treat for Madison Avenue shoppers, as the boutique (or more accurately the luxury gallery) does not often offer discount promotions.

Last week, the brand did host a sample sale at Soffer Haskin and these bags can very well be what was left over from the event. Nonetheless, we welcome a 40% discount without having to go to the Penn Station neighborhood. The best part is that the sale selection is quite good and there is a heavy concentration of exotic bags and accessories.

We secretly obtained access to the full inventory for the sale. You can browse all of the pictures after the jump. There is a large variety of the brand's iconic Manila, which normally runs about $2200 in python and between $1100 to $1300 for fabric varieties. The python hobo retails for $4950 and a larger python handbag with bold hardware (Brera) is $4049.

It's unclear if this sale will run for very long. You should call immediately, if you're interested in any of the items in the pictures. We strongly suggest you go to the boutique for the experience. It's like shopping in a fine art museum. Furthermore, we hear that VBH's lease is up and Apple may be taking over.

Inside the Bonpoint Sample Sale

The Bonpoint sample sale doesn't officially start until tomorrow but there was a line of more than 50 people when we arrived immediately before the sale opened. This season's sale is almost identical to past sales season's, except that there seems to be less inventory than usual.

All of the  merchandise at the Bonpoint sample sale is at set 60% off the retail sticker. That means that more formal dresses, which are normally priced in the $400-range are reduced to $260-ish. More casual dresses are about $200 in the boutique and come to about $80 at the sale. Boy's trousers are about $60 from $150 and collared shirt comes to $48 from $120.

The majority of the inventory appears to be from the spring 2013 collection. The most plentiful selection is within the shoe departmental Sizes range from itty-bitty to a size 38. Girl's patent mary janes are about $140 from $220 , sandals are $85 from $220 and canvas derby shoes are about $80 from $120.

Sorting through the clothing, there is almost something for everyone. The only exception is those looking to fit a child who wears a size two or three. If this is the case, we might suggest skipping the sale completely. There is almost nothing. The best selection is for infants. You can furnish an entire layette with sample sale Bonpoint if you choose.

The sale also includes accessories, swimwear, sun hats, pajamas, jackets and sweaters. Most of the shoppers were loading up full bags of merchandise. So we suggest that Bonpoint shoppers head over quickly and those who aren't can find lots of success at Zara kids.

Inside the Best Ever Louboutin Sample Sale

You might need an invite and a confirmed RSVP to get into the Christian Louboutin sample sale but that didn't stop our spies from getting inside. This morning, we infiltrated the super VIP sale and have can report that "this is the best sale yet."

This season, the Louboutin sale has moved across the street from the designer's showroom to a larger ground floor retail space. The merchandise is organized into three different sections-- women's shoes, women's bags and men's shoes. The larger space makes it much easier to shop and try on shoes.

While shopping the first VIP day of the sale, our spy spotted Stephanie March (of Law and Order fame). Thankfully, she wasn't hoarding shoes by the dozen, unlike past celebrity encounters.

The highlight of the sale is undoubtedly the broad selection of wearable and basic shoes. Usually, the Louboutin sample sale is overstocked with quirky and wacky designer niche shoes. This season, however, the inventory consists of lots of basics such as Pigalle pumps and peep toes in a variety of colors, including nude. There are also a Pigalle spikes in a variety of colors. The sale has a nice assortment of wedges, sandals and a large variety of flats.

The prices are the same as they have been for the past several seasons. Most of the stock falls within the $300 "blue sticker" range. There is a $250 "yellow sticker" category but nobody was lucky to find anything that inexpensive. Jeweled encrusted, Strass, are intermixed with the rest of the stock and are among the most expensive styles at $500 a pair. Some of the most popular shoes at the sample sale were the Yacht shoes with spikes, which look like Topsiders with ... spikes and Intern flats, which look like smoking slippers with ... spikes. The sale also has an assortment of Galias, which resemble common espadrilles with crest patches.

The best selection is within the size 39s and 40s and the smallest selection is the half sizes. Those with the very smallest of feet will also find a healthy assortment of choices. Those who don't fall into either of these size extremes, will still find plenty of shoes but may not have as many options.

The bag selection is larger than usual. A majority of the inventory is from this past winter collection and contains oversized totes with spikes, clutches, iPad cases with spikes and spiky wallets. There was also a nice selection of Sweet Charity bags, which are the mini shoulder bags with a bow closure.

Our spies didn't notice very much hoarding but there were a few shady shoppers who were asked to leave after getting caught swapping price stickers. This season, sample sale customers are limited to five pairs of shoes and two bags. The sales help is very sweet and helpful but the lack of air-conditioning was a huge complaint.

Sometimes, the sacrifice of air-conditioning is the price one must pay for discounted Louboutins. You can click here to see a few haul pictures from the sale.

Carlos Miele Closing Sale, 80% Off

Carlos Miele is closing his boutique in the Meatpacking District and is selling out his past inventory for 80% off retail. The Brazillian designer, who is best known for his striking red-carpet designs, has plans to open a new boutique on Madison Avenue but has not yet identified the ideal space.

The 14th Street boutique will remain open until all the merchandise is sold or the lease ends on June 1. Right now, is the ideal time to get your personal red carpet gown at a huge savings. Everything in the store is 80% off and there are hundreds of gorgeous gowns that are prime for picking.

Most of the designer's full length dresses retail between $2000 and $5000 but can be had for a reduced price ranging from about $400 to $1000. Cocktail dresses mostly retail for under $1000 and after the discount,  come out under $200.

Among the sale merchandise is this eye catching mini-rouched patterned blue gown from the resort 2013 collection. It's price is about $800 after the discount. There is also a large assortment of gowns from the spring 2013 collection. This gown worn by June Ambrose to the American Ballet Spring gala is reduced to $1000 from $5000. The dress also comes in white and could be a perfect wedding gown (size 38).

Girls looking for the right prom dress, will also do very well at this sale. The quality is much better than most anything you would find in an average department store and the sale prices are comparable to a contemporary evening wear brand. One shopper, on Sunday, picked a red gown for a white tie wedding and another shopper was purchasing sheer bolaro tops for $50 to wear over tees.

You can click the jump link to see pictures of the available merchandise. Keep in mind that all sales are final and some dresses are as old as 2008. The good thing is that formal evening wear is pretty classic and there aren't may items that look dated.

The Best $10 You'll Spend All Month

We have to admit that we have been a bit slow to pick up on the Uniqlo craze. We aren't exactly starved of inexpensive basics. Initially, it was the light ultra-light down jackets that got us into the store. They are the perfect layering item, which was incredibly useful this past winter.

As the entire family enjoyed their colorful jackets, it didn't take us long to start exploring other departments of the store. The next logical stop was the children's department. The pajamas were a huge hit with the little ones and they couldn't get enough. (These kiddy jammies are now reduced to $8.) While posting a huge online order, this week, we started clicking around and found women's ultra stretch color jeans in the sale section for $10 from $40. For $10, we had to try these brightly colored jeans.

For clarity, these pants are less of a denim and more of a stretch cotton jegging. The fit is great and they come in a rainbow of bright colors. While the fabric weight might be a bit too heavy in a matter of a few weeks, they are perfect for these cool Spring days. These skinny pants will also be very useful to have during cool summer nights by the ocean.

We don't usually find $10 items that we like so much as these jeans and had to share the find. Let us know of other hidden Uniqlo gems. With some items, it's hard to tell if they are cheap-cool or just cheap-junk.

Madison Avenue: Ins & Outs

The retail stores on Madison Avenue seem to change as quickly as fashion. It's almost impossible to keep up with all the ins and outs along our favorite shopping corridor. As the Park Avenue tulips come into full bloom, however, it seems a reasonable time to take inventory of the comings and goings of some of our favorite retail destinations.

Unlike any other retail corridor in the world, Madison Avenue remains unique as it is the only luxury destination that's intimately tucked within a residential community. One of the more noticeable changes this year, is the renovation of several residential buildings with prime retail space. The Carlton House at 61st Street, The Marquand at 68th Street and the Whitney brownstone project at 74th Street are all undergoing huge renovations, says Matthew Bauer, president of the Madison Avenue Business Improvement District.

As these new condos achieve success we wouldn't be surpassed to see many more developers invest in updating the residential spaces along Madison Avenue, while updating the commercial properties too. We are looking forward to these the completion of these projects to see what new ventures come our way.

For now, here is an update of what Madison Avenue stores have closed, are coming soon and have recently opened.

Thakoon Sample Sale Starts Now

The Thakoon sample sale doesn't officially start until Tuesday but those with the inside track will be able to shop the best selection starting Monday. During the sale preview, which isn't very strictly screened, fans of Thakoon will be able to shop the designer's showroom for clothing, shoes, bags and accessories priced up to 80% off.

The Showroom Project

Over the years we've noticed that prices seem to go up as the sale opens to the public. As expected, the samples are always priced the best. These samples are often cut for models, which can be a difficult fit if you're not 5'9" and 115 points. Those who fit a "real" size four may be lucky enough to snag great items at $50 or $150 for more elaborate pieces.

If you don't fit into samples, the best next thing is the open stock from Thakoon Addiction. At the last sale most of these items were priced between $50 and $200. More ornate fashion from the designer's higher end collection ran from $200 up to $400.

You can click here to see all our coverage from last year. We just hope that this season's sale has as much current fashion as the past sales.
