The Runway: How Much is that Dress Exactly?

Fashion insiders often refer to this time of year as Fashion Month. The international fashion world begins showing collections for the following season in mid-February in New York and continues to London, Milan and culminates in Paris.

As glamourous as it may seem, circuit is often described as a marathon that requires pacing and endurance. As spectators, it's hard not to ogle from our Instagram, Twitter and Facebook feeds. Everything seems too fresh and unique when you're looking into the figure of fashion.

One element that doesn't usually come to mind is the price of the items shown on the runway. We all know that fashion can be expensive but just how expensive can be surprising in both directions. Sites like Moda Operandi allow customers to shop designer trunk shows and secure runway fashion months in advance. The site also allows shoppers access to designer pieces that might never become available in traditional retail stores.

Obviously, you're going to have to pay up when purchasing a one-of-a kind or a small run item. How much you ask? We are about to find out. The above pictures represent some of the most photographed and adored items shown at New York Fashion week along with their "trunk show" prices.

Check out this silk organza Rosie Assoulin halter gown. The almost $12,000 price tag is almost as eye popping as the graphic stripe print and side cutouts. The sky blue Delpozo coat with leather appliques at the front, is a bit more digestible at $6,800. A Cushnie at Ochs pretty pink pantsuit was often used by media as the iconic example of 70s gone 2015, and rings in at $4500 for the coat, sweater and pants ensemble. The cloud print gown that Karlie Kloss wore to close out the Carolina Herrera show is $9000.

Scroll through the above look book to see more of the most talked about fashion of New York fashion week and their prices. Just remember, fashion is art and sometimes there's no price too high when it comes to owning an item that fills your heart with pleasure.

Bogner Sample Sale

We just found out that Bogner is about to host a huge outlet and sample sale at their showroom. The sale begins Friday morning and runs through the weekend.

At the last sale we found lots of ski and golf clothing priced at 70% off retail. (Perhaps if we had the right clothing, golf could be our sport?!) The sale also included women's ready-to-wear, Bogner Sport, Bogner Fire + Ice and Bogner's children's skiwear.

Lets face it, after all this severe cold, we need a new puffer to get us through March. (Or maybe, better yet, a trip to the Caribbean.)

Friday, February 27th through Sunday, March 1

Dennis Basso Up to 70% Off

There are things we love about sample sales and aspects we loathe. It's no doubt that we always prefer the ease of shopping at our local Madison Avenue boutiques over the chaos of a distant and out of the way sample sale. This weeks Dennis Basso sale is the best of everything.

Right now, the king of fur's Madison Avenue boutique is hosting a sale were fall fashion and furs are discounted from 40% to 70% off. We are told that the sale contains a lot more classic furs than the designer's recent sample sale. The best part is that shoppers will find similar prices. Obviously, the ready-to-wear dresses represent the most discounted merchandise.

The sale runs through the rest of the week. Don't be surprised to be enticed by the designer himself. His simile alone can you make you feel like a minx. If you want him to sweeten the deal, offer him a piece of cheese cake...

Neiman Marcus Online Consolidation Sale

Just when you thought that sale season was over, Neiman Marcus has posted thousands of some of the most titillating looks from winter 2014 at discounts up to 65% off. It seems as if Neiman Marcus has consolidated their designer merchandise from all over the country and uploaded it to the online store.

The hot dot and stripe Valentino pattern was a big sellout this year but this leather trench still remains. The original retail price was $16,500 but it's now reduced to $5775. This Alexander McQueen vest makes quite a statement with the stripped neck and waist. The original price was about $8200 and it's now $2868. The sale also includes a great selection of merchandise from The Row, which is discounted pretty close to the sample sale markdowns. Our favorite piece is this two-tone canvas and fur coat for $1300 from about $3900.

Take note that some of these items were reduced up to 75% in stores. I wouldn't be surprised if there were additional discounts intermittently. Keep in mind however, there isn't a big inventory of these items and once they are gone...

Fashion Week: Drapey Pants

Fashion week is officially over. Now is the best time to take a step back and review everything we've seen over the last week. We are serving up all smoking hot trends so that you know what to expect on the street and in the pages of your favorite fashion magazines come next winter.
Tia Cibani, Bibhu Mohapatra, Donna Karan
Drapey and slouchy pants have a reputation for being difficult to wear and the rumors are true. Even though getting the right fit and proportions can be difficult, there is a big payoff when you hit it right. Coming this fall, expect to see a lot more flowey pants.

Make no mistake, these aren't the drawstring pants we've been seeing for the past several seasons. The pants shown on the runway were made of luxe fabrics, like wool, velvet and cashmere. The one aspect that changes is the length of the pants. Donna Karan showed her version cropped while Tia Cibani's were extra long.

This style is usually easier to pull off if you're petite and have narrow legs and hips. If that isn't the case try layering a jacket or bulky sweater over your midsection is another option.

Fashion Week: That 70s Show

Fashion week is already starting to wind down. We are serving up all smoking hot trends while we get through the last days of shows. These top trends are what you can expect to see on the street and in the pages of your favorite fashion magazines, next winter.

Jason Wu, Rebecca Minkoff, Cushnie et Ochs

Watching old 70s television shows and movies are always fashion inspiring. The hair, the suede, the fringe-- it's all so Charlie's Angles sexy. Fashion designers collectively feel the same way. For winter 2015, pants with wide legs and high waists and color ways including teal, pink and camel have been dominating many collections. Rebecca Minkoff channelled her groove with lots of fringe.

The newest resurgence of the 70s is the fur stole, which was shown worn over one shoulder and across the body like a beauty pageant sash.  Creatures of the Wind, Jason Wu and Thakoon are just a few designers that stole the show.

Fashion Week: Head Popping Turtlenecks

Fashion week is already starting to wind down. We are serving up all smoking hot trends while we get through the last days of shows. These top trends are what you can expect to see on the street and in the pages of your favorite fashion magazines, next winter.
Tanya Taylor, Jill Stuart, Victoria Beckham
In the race to be cool the turtleneck is wining by much more than a hare. The cozy and body slimming favorite is popping up all over the runway. You can find the oldie-but-goodie tucked under fall dresses, as shown by Tanya Taylor and Jill Stuart. Victoria Beckham and various other designers showed oversized knits with a extra thick necks.

Diane Keaton and the late Steve Jobs are long time champions of the neck-warming basic. Now, you can bet they will be gobbling up your head soon too.

Limited Engagement: Dee Ocleppo (Hilfiger's) Pop-Up

Tommy isn't the only Hilfiger snagging the Fashion Week spotlight. This week, Dee Ocleppo Hilfiger is showcasing her accessory and handbag line in a pop-up shop-- hosted at Beautique. For your shopping convenience, the store is located between the Plaza Hotel and Bergdorf Goodman.

The Dee Oclepoo Spring 2015 bag collection offers customers interchangeable covers in exotic skins and leathers. Bright Rattan and fringed basket weave detailing give each bag a sense of playful, jet-set glamour. A favorite piece is the indispensable Roma Tote with its black weave and playful fringe offset by sleek white. The collection retails for between $995 and $3595.

The pop-up store will only be open through February 20th. So you're really not going to want to hesitate if you want to get a jump on St. Tropez chic.

Saks Sale Lives On, Online

Saks Fifth Avenue touted it's final sale earlier this month with discounts frozen at 70% off. The merchandise has been officially cleared from sales floors and relocated online.

Right now, you can search some of the most fashionable items from designer's winter collection discounted up to 60% off. (Remember, most all these items were once reduced 70% off but there was a no return policy.) This is a good opportunity to snag what's left from winter sales without a lifetime commitment.

Some sale highlights include a Givenchy stopped pencil skirt for $519 from $1290, a Stella McCartney mesh sleeve dress is $569 from $1425 and this Altuzarra mixed patterned shirt dress is about $400 from almost $1000. The sale also includes shoes but the discount is just 50% off.

We wouldn't be surprised if this winter merchandise were to hang out online for a bit longer. We would expect that there will be some additional surprise discounts but the markdown may not go above 70%.

Brian Atwood One Day Sample Sale

It's been some time since Brian Atwood hosted a sample sale. Last time there was an hour wait to get into this designer sale. Considering the extreme cold, you might want to think twice before heading to the designer's showroom in Chelsea.

We are told that the sale will consist of shoes from the fall 2014 collection and prices will be up to 70% off retail. At the last sale, sample sizes ranged from size 37 to 41, with a random scattering of 35s and 36s. The most plentiful assortment ranged from size 39 to 41.

At the last sale prices ranged from $350 to $400, with a scattering of flats for less money. Python heels were $500 and a few pair of boots were $1200. OTK boots--over-the-knee--were the most expensive at $2900. We would imagine that the price range will be quite similar.

Since the sale takes place at the designer's showroom there is a chance that you may be able to call ahead to get information rather than freezing outside. Sale details, including the showroom phone number are below.

Nordstrom 40% Off Sale

Earlier this year, Nordstrom announced they would end the tradition of its half-yearly sale and instead host six smaller sales. These smaller sales are said to coincide with national holiday weekends, when Americans tend to shop.

This week, ostensibly alongside President's weekend, Nordstrom is hosting a sale where a large assortment of items are reduced to 40% off. Among the designer merchandise is this small Chloe Baylee bag that is $1300 from $2250, Ferregamo snakeskin sandals are $845 from $1690 and a Rag & Bone shearling is $1340 from $2500.

After sorting and resorting the sale merchandise, it seems as much of the sale inventory are items that fall into the transitional-spring category and holdovers from the winter sale. For example, this 3.1 Phillip Lim sweater is from the winter 2014 collection and is now 65% off and this 3.1 Phillip Lim shift dress is more traditional to spring and is now reduced 40%. There also seems to be a lot of great premium denim options, most of which are marked 40% off.

The sale will continue through February 22nd. The next big holiday weekend is Memorial Day, which falls on May 26th this year. No need to speculate what will be on sale during that sale.

Jonathan Adler 70% Off

Jonathan Adler doesn't seem to hold the same novelty it did, say, three years ago. Perhaps it's because of the brand's rapid expansion or the way other companies have captured a similar esthetic. A discount ranging from 30% to 70% off, however, has us taking a closer look at the knickknacks and home furnishings.

Among the bedding we found a queen sized print coverlet is $150 from $575, white sheets with navy print trim are $70 from $275 and a grey geometric duvet cover is also $70 from $225. This adorable jute pouch is a great little gift item fort $19 from almost $70 and a zippy wallet is $22 from $78. Housewares are a bit more expensive with the discounts ranging from 30% to 70% off. Throw pillows, like this one, are 50% off and this rococo side table is $260 from $400.

If you go to the store, you'll also find lots of furniture floor samples on sale. Prices are comparable to West Elm or CB2 after the discount but the design is a bit brighter and kitschier.

Stepping Into 75% Off Manolos

The Manolo Blahink final reduction sale started today and there was no way that a little bit of sleet would keep us away. How often can you score the finest of heels at just a hint above sample sale prices-- and about without the fray?

As per usual, the prices are marked by colored dots that start at $195. The difference, this year, is the the prices rocket to $600, which is almost twice as much as previous years. We were also really disappointed that so few shoes had red dots ($195). This category included only the most plain and basic style pumps. Most shoes had green dots ($255), which is only $60 more but it seems to be a mental hurdle. There were a variety of these suede cap-toe shoes for $225. Here are pictures of almost everything at the sale.

Tall boots are all priced at the tippy top $600 level and lower boots are $375. Then there are the more ornate shoes, like the Hangisi and over the top satin Borlaks, which are both priced at $325. Low boots with gems are $375. The iconic Manolo Mary Jane is available in red and nude for $255. Pony hair shoes are $325 and the iconic gator shoes are priced as marked, which is about 50% off. (More pics here.)

The available sizes vary across styles but there was more than enough for everyone. Even the woman who had piles of 10 or more shoes at their feet.

There was no line at 1pm and no reports of lines throughout the day. Just be sure not to show up at 2pm, when the store closes to restock. Lets agree to understand that restocking means reorganizing the merchandise. The boutique sale does not usually receive new inventory throughout the sale.

The Best Manolo Sale of the Season

We have made it through two markdowns at Manolo Blahnik and the final price cut is finally here. Starting Monday, Manolo will begin their final markdown of the season. This four day sale is the perfect opportunity to stock up on classic and ornate shoes from the winter collection at up to 75% off.

Sale styles are from the exclusive boutique collection and include some alligator. Prices are always marked by sticker dots, which usually range from $195 for a red dot up to $350 for a green dot. Most shoes and low boots-- even highly ornate styles-- are priced at $250.

The markdown event will begin this Monday and run through Thursday, February 12. Once the sale ends the Blahnik boutique will close for a breather. The planned re-org will continue until Monday, February 16th, when the store will reopen with the new collection.

The store is often crowded but at least there usually isn't a long line to get in. The sale will only run for four days and styles and sizes run low quickly. If you're looking for a great deal we suggest you switch out of your heels and take a run over to the boutique asap.

For a full rundown of past final markdowns you can check out past story from the Summer here.

Chanel Shoes Extra 30% & Sonia Rykiel 75% Off

There isn't much left in stores from the winter 2014 collections. Saks and Barneys have done away with the aging collections and what's left at Bloomingdales and Bergdorfs is sparse. One bright spot, however, are the Chanel shoes and Sonia Rykiel selection at Bloomingdales, on 59th Street.

Chanel shoes, which are already reduced, are an extra 30% off. Mid-calf lace-up boots with a built-in wool sock, ring in under $900 from $1750. Nude and black cap-toe sparkly platforms are $460 from almost $900 and all black knee-high boots are $1500 from almost $2300. There are also some shoes that haven't been treated to a first markdown and they are a straight 40% off. Those shoes include, black and khaki moto boots that are about $1000 from $1750 and a classic cap-toe with a wooden patterned leather is about $600 from $995. Pictures of the entire sale selection are right this way.

Unfortunatly, there wasn't a another markdown given to Chanel clothing. There are still plenty of great items but the discount is frozen at 40%. Across the way from the Chanel "shop", is a great selection of Sonia Rykiel clothing that is 75% off. A red knit cardigan is about $250 from $940 and a dress with sequined lips (perfect for Valentine's day) is just about $60. A top with lips comes to just $50. Here are pics of the sale merchandise.

If you're shopping online you can save an extra 20% off already reduced shoes with the code SHOES. Frankly, the online sales aren't very good but there are a few second markdowns, like these Genetic jeans that come to $95 from $195.

The Hottest Spring Accessories at 20% Off

After shopping amazing winter sales, it's hard to digest paying full price for anything. We agree, it's hard. Sometimes, however, there are items so hot that your sensibilities are compromised. Forzieri has just the right incentive to make buying now make sense.

The European luxury retailer is offering customers 20% off spring purchases. The best part is that there are no exclusions, which means that you can apply the discount to the new collection of Valentino, Fendi and Saint Laurent. Use the code CUPIDWEEK at checkout to engage the discount. The discount does expire on February 18th.

If you can resist the shinny new collections, certainly head over to the sale section where the discounts are up to 60% and an additional 20% discount with the code EXTRA20VIP.

Farfetch Discounts top 70%

Farfetch is known for bringing the world's most popular fashion boutiques, local and emerging designers, and brands to a single website. It almost makes us sad that we can shop our favorite Italian boutiques right here in New York. Some might say it takes away the adventure but it's realistic to think that anyone can hop on a plane several times a year and great each new collection from their favorite stores.

One of the other great things about Farfetch is that it makes markdowns available globally. Right now, the site is offering an additional 20% off all discounted merchandise. Just use the code x20feb15 at checkout. That means that you can find unbelievable items on sale from 26 different countries.

We've never seen this Moschino Shift dress with a quilted bag that's from Julian Fashion, in Milano, Italy. Then there is this check quilted jacket by Fey from the boutique Eraldo in Ceggia, Italy, which is about $444 from $1556. Here's a floral print Marni blouse from the Parisian boutique, L'Eclaireur. Luxembourg-based Smets has this Kenzo print dress that comes to $310 from almost $900.

One thing that we've noticed is that many American brands are more expensive when sold from foreign stores. We suppose that's what happens when you pay duty twice. Speaking of which, all prices include duty and returns are free for 14 days after your purchase is received.

What's even cooler, is that Farfetch has click-and-collect service, which allows customers to purchase items online, then pick them up from any of 100 boutiques around the world. Best part, there are no associated shipping charges that can easily become expensive.

This sale runs through Saturday, Feb 7th at 9am GMT. The last additional discount was the beginning of December but the discounts weren't as good as they are now. It's hard to predict global online markdowns but it's an awful fun learning.
