Inside the DVF Sample Sale

The Diane von Furstenberg sample sale is kicking off the post-holiday weekend shopping line-up. This morning the sale opened to an eager crowd of VIP shoppers that were no doubt looking to capture a glimpse into the legend of the DVF sale.

As with most sales, the legend is far gone. There are no sample sale racks and there aren't many items from the current summer collection. On the bright side, prices are the same besides for a few small exceptions.  This season, wrap dresses are $15 more than last season and are priced $115. (Last season, they were $100.) We even found this classic black-and-white wrap dress online for under $100 from nearly $400.

Non-wrap dresses are still $100, tops are $50, gowns are $150 and fur and leather items are $200. (That's $50 less than last season for the leather items.) Sweaters are $50, which s $10 more than last season. Just take note, that the cover ups are categorized as $100 dresses, which doesn't seem to make much sense.

A lot of the sale's inventory is from winter 2016. The best items are the gowns, which are located on the far left of the sales floor. There you will find long kaftans, fabulous laced pieces and embellished gowns what are all well worth the $150 price tag. The clutches are also a good take-away for $50 and there are several nice scarves for $30. Sunglasses are more pricey than necessary at $50 considering they are all online here for $40 and are returnable.

Shoppers weren't loading up with merchandise, which is a tall-tell sign. We suggest waiting a few days until there are additional discounts. At this point, you can find more seasonal merchandise at similar prices online.

Disecting Nordstrom's Half-Yearly Sale

The Nordstrom Half-Yearly sale is back. This is Nordstrom's biggest sale of the year. The discount is 40% off most all Spring and Summer merchandise. Take note, the sale only runs through June 4.

Some items may not be discounted as much as other department stores but some brands are reduced even more. Nordstrom is also notorious for price matching. If you see an item priced less at another store make sure to contact customer service and Nordstrom will match the price in most situations.

Since Nordstrom added more edgy designers it's become a great place to find items that might be gone from other retailers. For instance, we are infatuated with Brandon Maxwell's strapless jumpsuit, this Ellery blazer and this Shrimps vegan leather biker jacket. Plenty of shoes are at 40% off too, which ranks the savings near the tops with Saks. Here are the Prada Oxford platforms with hearts, Miu Miu slides and Dolce & Gabbana rose print heels.

There is usually another discount but Nordstrom doesn't usually drop prices below 60%. If you're shopping in the stores-- that's another story.

Holiday Weekend Discount Cheat Sheet

Much of the seasonal merchandise in department stores and online retailers are on sale now. At most of our local shopping destinations, spring and summer clothing is discounted 40% off but the prices of shoes and handbags vary.

Some boutiques are offering even lower discounts than the department stores. For instance, Lanvin and Prada are both offering customers a 50% savings. Below is a comparison chart of Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Take note some designers have still haven't gone on markdown and others, like Louboutin and Valentino, are still on presale. We expect a sale to break on these brands on June 1 but we'll keep you posted. Saks seems to have the best shoe selection and best discount. Bloomingdales still has an assortment of Gucci shoes discounted 50%. You can click here to see the available styles.

Louboutin Presale Starting Now

Most stores have already started their first markdowns on contemporary and luxury lines but there are always a few brands that hold off on discounts. Starting Thursday, you will be able to presale seasonal merchandise from Christian Louboutin.

The discount from Saks Fifth Avenue and Barneys is 30% off. We haven't received details from the Louboutin boutique but will update the post when we do.

Some of the sale highlights include colored crystal and suede Pigalle Follies that come to $1625 from $2345, mesh/lace Follies that are $556 from $795, espadrille platform wedges that are also about $556 from $795, Mia Heart Pumps are $590 from $845 and color block sandals are $700 from nearly $1000.

The sale officially goes public on May 26. Purchases from most stores will be held until then. A selection of much of what's on sale is in the scroll above.

Valentino Now on PreSale

It took a few days but Valentino has finally hit the sale racks. The discounts range from 30% to 40% off depending on the item and the season it was released. (Some stores are still showing past season merchandise.) As we suspected, the bag variety is focused on the very expensive embroidered and embellished styles.

📸 Louise Red Knapp

Among the discounted shoes are several Rockstud styles. We find that Saks Fifth Avenue has the best selection and best discount at 40% off. Presale is already underway. The sale officially becomes public on June 1. Among the styles on sale are these classic style Rockstuds in blue (Denim), taupe and blush. The point-toe pumps are available in 'Stone' and a burgundy and a variety of d'Orsay styles have also been marked down, including the basic black.

The bags at Saks are discounted 40%. Among the included styles are a butterfly denim tote, a medium size Lock shoulder bag in ivory and the Rockstud bucket bag. Our favorite is this My Rockstud, which is sure to sell out as soon as the sale goes live.

MatchesFashion is likely to take it's Valentino markdown soon and also has a large assortment. NetaPorter is likely to put the merchandise online after June 1. Neiman Marcus will begin at the same time and the discount will also be 40%.

Net-a-Porter Sale Begins Up to 50% Off

Net-a-Porter just went live with their Spring season markdowns. Like many other multi-brand stores, the luxury fashion site instituting a designer phase-in program.

The designers that are currently on sale include Balmain, Alexander McQueen, Tom Ford, Lanvin and Stella McCartney. Later this week, you'll see the sale selections from Off-White, Givenchy, Fendi,  older season Gucci and many more. The full designer sale  calendar is below.

Some of the current sale highlights include  a Balmain tank that comes in a variety of colors and is reduced to $105 from $210, a pretty pink Lanvin shoulder bag is $688 from $1375 and Stella McCartney cat-eye mirrored frame glasses are $231 from $330. There is also a slew of items from Leandra Madine's Man Repeller collection reduced 50% off and we love this top from Dodo Bar Or that comes to just $145 from $290.

Net-A-Porter usually doesn't wait too long for their second markdown. We suspect the next price cut to come on June 7 and prices will drop to up to 60%. We advise that you don't wait until then if you're shopping some of the hotter items of the season. We know for sure that items like these Off-White jeans or these miss matched Chloe mules will not make it to the second markdown.

The sale calendar looks something like this... We'll keep you posted as we see more designers added to the sale.

Where to Find Gucci 50% Off

The current rumors are that Gucci boutiques and certain department stores are going to bypass this season's markdowns. We can't say we are very surprised. Last year's VIP lists upset customers and was a hardship on sales associates. Although it's a bit harder to find Gucci markdowns we know exactly where to look.

Right now, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdales are offering discounts of 50% off on select Gucci items. The available selection is not the most desirable pieces but some are okay and look rather attractive when on sale. There are about six bag styles in the available sale selections. There is this Lady Web that's $1540 from $2200, which is still available online. There is this GG Supreme top handle bag, which is no longer available online. An Animalier top handle bag is $1788 from $2980 and is still available. Our favorite of the bunch is the Bamboo Shopper bag with the cherry blossom blooms is still available for $1314 from $2190. The GG Continental Wallet is also part of the sale but the discounted version isn't available online.

The shoe selections at Saks are similar. The discount is 50% but most styles seem old. The best of the bunch are the Marmont suede boots that are $625 from $1250, the t-strap pumps with lips that are nearly $450 from about $900 and the cherry blossom rain boots that are $285 from $570. At Bloomingdales it's much of the same plus a few outliers. There is the Marmont boot with a pearl heel that's about $800 from $159, the Querelle high heel sandals that has a buckle for $425 from $850 and clogs that range from $425 to about $500. There are also pumps with a bow for $425 from $850, similar booties for $625 and one of our favorite sale items are the classic pumps with a lip toe that's about $400 from $800.

The presale becomes official at Bloomingdales on Thursday. We are hoping that's when the online selection will reflect the discounts too. We'll keep you posted in the case we hear news about boutique markdowns but we tend to doubt that will happen.

Bergdorf Goodman Presale Begins

As you're finalizing your Memorial weekend plans, retailers are beginning to start their seasonal markdowns. The past couple of sale seasons have been peculiar. Frankly speaking, the retail business has been difficult and retailers are trying to figure out how to markdown 'wisely'.

A honcho at Bergdorf Goodman told us that the store has decided that it will no longer be discounting any Gucci. We hear that this is also the newest policy at Gucci boutiques. We'll see for how long that policy lasts. After all, old merchandise needs to go somewhere.

Among the items on presale are lots and lots of bags and shoes. This season, Bergdorf Goodman is implementing a phase in system. Over the course of the next few weeks more designer brands will be added to the sale. For now, you can choose from Tom Ford and Saint Laurent, which are both discounted 40%. Most other designer shoes and bags are marked down 30%. The sale officially goes public on Tuesday.

Some of the sale highlights include the Tom Ford Sienna bag in various colors is discounted to $1470 from $2450. The grey is $1350 from $2250 and is quite lovely. The Saint Laurent bag collection isn't really very good but we have an affinity for this rainbow envelope bag and the Monogram shoulder bag is $1390 from nearly $2000. Here is a Sac Ju Jour in basic black for about $2000n from nearly $2900. The presale also includes Alaia, Alexander McQueen, Anya Hindmarch, Balenciaga, Givenchy and more. (All the sale bags except Givenchy are already discounted online.)

Valentino, The Row and Fendi are part of the next phase. We are expecting to see lots of the seasonal bags included in the markdown like the tribal patterns or ultra-expensive embellished bags. The Fendi bags should run along the same lines with the studded flower bags and some Dotcom bags hitting the sale tables.

Upstairs the shoe presale selection is enormous. There are dozens of Prada styles, rows and rows of Aquazzura.(All the sale shoes are already available online too.) We particularly like these Fendi sandals with studs that are $630 from $900, ruffle suede sandals from Alexandre Birman that are $437 from $625 and Gianvitto Rossi's block heels are starting to prove to be timeless.

We highly suggest that online shoppers start browsing online now. Most of the products we saw at the store are already discounted online. Once news gets out the best items will be gone very, very, very quickly. Those who prefer to shop at the store can begin by browsing pictures from our shopping trip right here.

FarFetch Private Sale 50% Off

Farfetch is known for bringing the world's most popular fashion boutiques, local and emerging designers, and brands to a single website. Usually sales start a bit later on Farfetch because many of the origin boutiques are European, Excitingly enough, this week Farfetch has started a private sale for VIPs. You must use this link to access the discounts.

The sale includes items for men, women and children with discounts ranging up to 50% off. Some of the sale's highlights include this Chiara Ferragni lightweight sweater that's $150 from $300, these Tod's sandals are actually reduced 60%, this Balmain, #doyouspeakbalmain tee, is kinda amazing and is $136 from $340 and here is a Missoni dress for $320 from $800. We found these Chloe ballerina flats for just $200 and this Anya Hindmarch clutch is 50% off and a great steal.

The private sale ends on Monday night and then the sale opens to the public. If there are items you want, we suggest you snag them before the weekend. Merchandise tends to sell out quickly once the sale goes public.

Ruffling It Up at the Caroline Constas Sample Sale

Caroline Constas's ruffled blouses and dresses are the must-have item of the season. Almost every store has interpreted her designs. But why settle for a designer imposter when you can get the real version for less?

📸Dela Fard

The Caroline Constas sample sale officially starts Thursday morning but we were able to get a little taste of the goodies this afternoon. As a matter of fact there were so many amazing options that it was hard to pick our favorites. There are two full racks of samples, which are all priced at $100. Open stock is a bit more pricey. Blouses are $175, dresses are $295, skirts are $200 and shorts are $75. The best part of the sale is that a lot of the merchandise is from this season, which is currently in stores now. You can see pictures from inside the sale right here.

Among the samples and open stock we found lots of off-the-shoulder tops including this patterned style, a gingham bustier top, a longer ruffled variation and several more conservative, but playful, pieces like this. Then there are lots of dresses and skirts. There's the off-the-shoulder bustier shift dress in various prints, high-low ruffled skirts and playful high-low ruffled dresses.

Be forewarned it's very hard to choose which items to take home. They essentially all look great and are very pretty. Our only worry might be the crowds that this sale will draw. Caroline Constas is highly in demand and the discounts, even for the open stock, are quite attractive considering how retailers have sold out of many size options.

This is one sale we wouldn't want to put off attending. We just hope there is enough ruffles and bows to keep sample shoppers happy. Take note, there are mirrors but no fitting rooms, so be ready to see and be seen.

Trends: Blazers and Oversized Earrings

Blazers are the must-have item of the season. They are especially functional when the weather is coolish but you refuse to open your coat closet. Blazers can be worn as a mini-dress, over wide pants or slim jeans. The effect is always the same-- a polished and chic look that's also functional. Well, most of the time.

Our favorite look for spring, which isn't necessarily a realistic look, is pairing thigh-high Balenciaga boots with a short jacket or a relaxed blazer that's belted. We especially love the offerings from Nordstrom, like this chain trim blazer from Alexander Wang and this boyfriend style from ATM Anthony Thomas. (Covering your butt is completely overrated.) If you absolutely insist on more coverage, layer your blazer over an extra long button down shirt.

Moving on to the accessory element -- oversized earrings-- is the best way to complete this1980s look. The statement earring was seen all over the runway and is primed for streetwear. We are in love with the variety of beaded options available through Bauble Bar via Nordstrom. These oversized earrings from Kandra Scott could also do the job and these rose gold fill statement hoops will complete that standout 80s look.

Nordstrom is the perfect destination to shop these trends and everything you need for Summer. The store has all the most cutting edge designer pieces and inexpensive options too. The best part is Nordstrom's first-rate customer service, which includes free shipping both ways.

Inside the Jimmy Choo Sample Sale

The Jimmy Choo sample sale kicked off early this morning to VIPs and press. The scene inside was quiet but there was a line growing outside that spanned almost a full avenue. We suggest you read below if you're contemplating spending the day standing on 18th Street.

Prices start at $200 for basic style shoes, booties are $325 and boots are $375. Generally speaking, that's an attractive discount. We do, however, have a problem with the way the merchandise is treated. Shoes are piled high and thrown all over the floor. How can a brand expect shoppers to respect and value the merchandise if it's treated like garbage? In this environment, it's hard to motivate yourself to even spend $200.

During past sales, customers complained that lots of shoes were damaged and worn. We did not see damages as huge problem. Inside the shoppers will find men's and women's shoes, handbags, small leather goods, glasses and other accessories. You can click here to see pictures and the full price list. Sizes were available from 34 to 41 and the selection included pumps, flats, sandals, boots, booties, sneakers, sparkly heels, and lots more.

Bags are divided by size among several tables. Evening bags are $350, small bags are $250, medium sizes are $350 and large bags are $450. Exotic bags are an extra $200. In addition to bags, there were tables of wallets, leather accessories, glasses and scarves. Prices start at $100 for wallets and small leather goods, scarves are $75 and belts are $50.

If you aren't a die-hard Jimmy Choo fan, we suggest you take the afternoon to stroll around the village and the farmers markets and go back before the sale ends. We are told there will be restocking and during past sales prices were reduced to just $100 for shoes.

Saks Fifth Avenue Pre-Sale (inc Gucci)

The Saks Fifth Avenue presale is officially underway. The discounts are even better than Barneys with discounts up to 40% off shoes, clothing and handbags. The most exciting news is that Gucci shoes are discounted 50%.  Lucky that we have spies everywhere and we know exactly what styles are included in the upcoming sale.

We are told that Fendi bags are 40% off. Included in the markdown are the floral appliqué bag that comes to about $1200 from $2150, a floral woven bag is $1100 from $1850 and a Dot.com with stitching is $2100 from $3550.

We are most excited about the Gucci items that are 50% off. The Lexi stars and lips flats are about $500 from $1000, the Marmont GG Suede boot is $550 from $1100, cherry blossom print rainbows are $285 from $570, and the Ofelia studded pumps are $925 from $1850. That's all the Gucci information we were provided but are hoping to get more updates.

Among the Valentino shoes, that are on presale for 40% off, there is the pump with ankle straps, this Rockstud block heel sandal and lots of espadrilles. Among the Prada sale selection are platform Oxfords with hearts, flower slides and satin slides.

Presale purchases ship on May 20. Some women's clothing is already in the online sale section but markdowns will officially hit the site on May 23. Good luck!

Sale Season Begins at Barneys

Memorial Day is traditionally known as beginning of the summer season but it's also the start of sale season. As always, we will be starting our markdown roundups. Department stores usually kick-off the retail sale season and boutiques following closely behind.

Presales are akin to the "quiet period" before a company goes public. You can't actually buy the merchandise but you can have your broker, oh sorry-- sales person, hold your preferred items until the sale officially begins. Most stores take your credit card information and charge your account when the items ship or are picked up.

This week, is a big week for sales and presales. The Barneys is promoting a sale of 50% off but designer merchandise still in prsale mode. The sale officially begins May 23 but you can contact a sales person to preorder merchandise now. (Our in-store contacts are below.)

Usually Barneys offers the steepest discounts across in all departments but this season the sale isn't as generous as usual. For first markdown, on bags and shoes are only 30% off. On the bright side, the selection is larger than usual. There is a very nice variety of Chloe bags, including the Faye in suede navy, several color variations of the Mily bag and some styles of the Drew bag.

There is also a lot of Balenciaga and Saint Laurent bags on sale, including Balenciaga's iconic stripped shopper, the Antigona in brown and green and several suede City Bags. YSL's Sac du Jour in gray, the du Jour with Love Patches and the Monograme Kate in a powder blue and other variations hit the markdown tables.

Among the shoe brands hitting sales racks are Gianvito Rossi, Aquazzura, Giuseppe Zanotti, Lanvin, Givenchy, Chloe,  and many, many more. Needless to say, we are really disappointed that Barneys is only discounting shoes 30% this season. Nonetheless, there are some sale highlights like Aquazzura Tropicana sandals that are $599 from $850, tied ankle boots (already discounted online) and leather flats.

We haven't seen any stock lists from Prada or Valentino yet but we expect to have them soon. Chanel, Louboutin, Dior and Alaia don't start their markdowns at the same time as other brands. It's usually a few weeks later. Gucci has a tradition of running a sale for just a few days at some point during the season. We'll keep you posted on all of the above.

Generally speaking, Barneys' sales associates aren't always forthcoming with presales. If there is an item you want to secure, we suggest that you give your name and number to the respective brand associate and have them call you when the discount becomes available. You can usually expect a call within hours of leaving the store. Below are a few sales people you can contact:

Travel Advice: How to Pack

There are dozens of experts to tell you where to travel, when to go and how to get there. In contrast, there are very few, if anyone, to help you pack. Hitha Paiepu, the blogger behind Hitha on the Go and actor of the new book How to Pack is an expert.

Personally, I'm always negotiating for an extra piece of luggage. One time, I was instructed by a business partner that I could only take a carry-on for a four day trip to you Europe. (Imagine the horror!) I ended up wearing thigh-high Givenchy platform boots almost everywhere we went because they wouldn't fit in my bag. The thigh-high boots were worn on the plane, on the train that connects Rome to Florence and I was quite the laugh wearing the boots while running through Heathrow Airport when our connecting flight arrived late.

You get the picture. It's hard for a fashion lover to pack sensibly. For that reason, we sought out the advice of a legitimate expert.

In Hitha's new book, How to Pack, she breaks down everything a traveler needs to know in order to be comfortable, confident and fashionable. The former globetrotting pharma exec has logged more than a million flight miles and offers tons of helpful guides. She serves up full packing lists including, what to pack for a holiday weekend, what to bring in a carry-on and offers inside tips like applying dry shampoo before a long trip to conquer oily hair.

We tracked down the famed Hitha on the Go travel publisher and author asked a few questions of our own. Enjoy!

I love the hacks that you offer in your book; like using a contact case to store face creams. What are some of your personal favorite travel hacks?
Thank you so much! Rubbing a dryer sheet on an item of clothing to remove odor is one of my favorite (and most used tips). I’ve gotten cigar smoke (thanks, Vegas!) out of a blazer with that trick. Another favorite hack is to steam my face after I’ve steamed my clothes post-flight, and then do a collagen sheet mask. It leaves my skin fully cleansed and rehydrated - and ready to take on whatever my trip has in store for me!

I find that most travelers develop a good relationship with flying. What are some of your in-flight rituals? What are some items you always carry-on?
I’m one of those odd people who loves the journey - even the airport and the flight. If I can, I’ll try to give myself time to unwind in the Delta Sky Club (thanks to my American Express card) and unwind with a snack and a glass of wine, if it’s the evening. When I board the plane, I always wipe down the arm rests, window shade, tray table, and seat belt buckle with a sanitizing wipe. I then wrap myself in my cashmere travel blanket, pop in my headphones to play a soothing playlist, and read one of the many books I’ve downloaded on my Kindle. I drink at least 1 large bottle of Fiji water (1 bottle = 3 hours), and will slip on a silk eyemask if I get sleepy.

In How to Pack, you talk about the three types of packers (the anxious overpacker, the forever forgetful, the jumbled traveler and the impractical dreamer). I think many Mad-Spy readers fall into the two categories--nervous overpacker and tend to pack too much or the impractical dreamer-type, who buys a new untested wardrobe before a trip. Fashion lovers do often want to dress up—especially when traveling. How can someone balance packing efficiency with the desire to have a (new) handbag for each outfit?
It all comes down to Power Pieces - those staples in your wardrobe that make you feel and look your best. When I pack, most of the items that make my suitcase are these items - the skinny pants that make my legs look great, the cashmere sweater that feels like I’m wearing a cloud, the driving loafers that are both chic and can be walked in for miles. I do give myself more leeway with accessories, espeically scarves and jewelry. They take up such little room and can completely transform an outfit. I also will pack 3 different lipsticks - a nude and two different bold colors. I’ve found that switching shoes or changing my lipstick satisfies the need to wear something different.

Is there ever a time when all packing rules go out the window and you allow yourself to roll out the steamer trunks?
Indian weddings are my exception! You need a different outfit (complete with jewelry and eye makeup!) for every event. When there’s five or six events during a single wedding, it means it’s time to pack the big suitcases :)

It can be embarrassing to have your co-workers all waiting for your luggage to come off the conveyor belt when everyone has only taken a carry-on. I think you offer great advice by suggesting that business travelers coordinate before heading out. Are there any other packing logistics that should be hashed out before a big corporate roadshow?
I recommend shipping any supplies (booth signs and supplies) in advance will let you travel lighter - literally and figuratively! Plan for your items to arrive at the hotel 48 hours before you need them, to give you time to correct any issues that may come up. Purchasing as many things on site is also helpful - just create a spreadsheet with all the tasks required before, during, and after a trade show and assign them accordingly. There should be a single project manager who’s an expert at troubleshooting problems as they arise - and they will arise. And if someone does have to wait at the baggage claim, another team member (or two) should go pick up the rental car to save time.

For the uninitiated, this sale is legendary for its amazing prices. Basic pumps and sandals are usually $200, catwalk styles are $250, bejeweled styles are $325, and boots are $375. Women's shoes run from size 35 to 40 and men's go from 43 to 46. At the last sale men's shoes were priced at $250 or $375 and included loafers, Oxfords, driving shoe and ankle boots.(Above are an assortment of Jimmy Choo shoes that can be found for about the same price online.)

There are always some handbags and small leather goods. Last season, small bags started at $250 for small sizes, medium size bags were $350 and large totes were $450. Small leather goods, like wallets, key chains and bracelets were all $75.

The wait to get into this sale can be massive but the new RSVP system will hopefully limit the amount of attendees. We just suggest that you RSVP right away. We can only assume that the list will close when it hits a certain number of RSVPs. Once that train leaves the station, it's hard to get on.
